The purpose of my whole trip was to come and support my alma mater's tennis team in the SEC tournament, taking place in Knoxville, TN, from April 26-30. I'm also one of the unofficial photographers of the team, and several of the players' parents have told me that they like my photos the best. Aw shucks. They're probably just being nice, but I'll take the compliments. I like taking pictures, particularly of sports, and plus I know several of these players. It's always easier to photograph a subject that you're actually interested in. And since these guys do a lot more winning than losing, it makes the matches (and following the team) that much better. Since my Racquet Dawgs (that's what I call the UGA men's tennis team) tied for 1st place in the regular season, ... read more

Lots of good pictures at the end of this one - scroll on after you read. On our walk around the Fulton campground the night before we left, Kim and I spoke to a man whose license plate was DINGOUT. Guess what he does? He and his wife travel around the country following the severe hail storms, repairing dings in automobiles, RVs, etc. We told him about Elvis’ birthplace, he told us about Sun Records. Broke camp early (for us, anyway) and were on the road by 9:30. Only about 100 mile trip from Fulton MS to Memphis TN. Seen along the road near Memphis was an ad for FOSTERS AUTO BODY in RED BANKS. I lived on Foster Street in Red Bank, NJ. That was an omen; I’m still trying to figure out for what, ... read more

I saw two main sites today: the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site in Greeneville, TN, and the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge. As a connoisseur of presidential lore, the Andrew Johnson site was a must-see for me in this neck of the woods; I was aware of its existence for a while, since I regularly stop at these places on my travels (check out my trip from last July and August if ye doubt my veracity). I was not, however, aware of the existence of the Titanic Museum until about 2 weeks ago. I had a long conversation with my friend Jim about his travels around the South, and when I told him I would be up here for a few days, he told me not to miss out on this museum. I did some online ... read more

Tyler had slept in our living room and appeared to be sleeping as Abcde and I headed to breakfast. Abs made faces with the staff while eating blueberries until Vallery and Joyce came down. I then headed up to grab a shower and get wife moving. Long story short, we got on the road a bit later than I had hoped, more like 11am than the 10am or earlier that everyone but wife seemed to be shooting for. We headed north on a new route, Siri said it would be faster, we assumed that was because we would dodge some road construction. Anyway it took us through Chattanooga and Knoxville on our way back to Lexington. By the time we had reached Chattanooga we had only stopped 3 times for either gas or potty breaks. Late ... read more

We made reasonable time to Nashville and stopped as always for dinner at Prince's Hot Chicken Shack. As we walked in I thought we were in luck, there was no line and we walked right up and ordered. Tyler and I split a Medium spice half chicken, Caroline had a Mild breast as did Joyce and Vallery got her breast unseasoned. As we located a table to sit and wait for our food to come out I recognized the family in line behind us. It was Todd and Shonda, the Chi Alpha pastors who had lived 2 doors down from my parents when I was in high school. I introduced them to Caroline and Abcde and chatted with them for a little while. Then Abcde wanted to run around so I escorted her up and down ... read more

Thursday was our day to visit Shilo and after a restful night, we got up early, and started out. The GPS in the car routed us a back road to the battlefield. I don’t mean a state route instead of an interstate; no, it took us on back gravel roads that looked like Gen. Johnston could have travelled on 150 years ago! Interesting ride past sod farms, dirt paths to the river, and swamps with roads barely above the water. I have been reading a lot on the Civil War. We’ve visited most of the major battlefields in the East. Shilo was the first BIG battle in the west. In 1862 Grant started south and after defeating the Confederates at Forts Donelson and Henry, brought his armies up the Tennessee to Pittsburgh Landing, just 20 miles ... read more

Every spring we unwinterize the RV and after putting in some clothes, load it up with food and take off for a weekend or longer but near home to ensure we haven’t forgotten anything and we will be ready to take off for longer trips. This “shakedown” is always a fun time, a bit fretful lest we forgot something or worse, forget how to do something. That’s why we stay close to home, so we aren’t caught out far away cursing our ignorance. This year we got the coach ready and had water on board, hot water heater primed (don’t want to burn the tank out by not having water in it!) and checked the tires professionally for air and condition. We loaded the staples, put in a few clothes, and added a new electric heater. ... read more

Jack Daniels Distillery, Lynchburg, Tn Joan doesn't mind my National Parks Bucket List. But sometimes she gets a little annoyed by everything on the itinerary being a National Park. She loves the rangers but wants to see more of what the local folk are like. (We've found that as often as not, rangers come from other parts of the country, just like their visitors do). So on this trip she staged a bit of a rebellion and insists that we include some non-park places on our tour. It extends the number of days. But I've learned the truth of the old adage, 'Happy Wife, Happy Life'. So yesterday, we drove back north up I24 thirty miles and then took a beautiful green dot road West to Lynchburg, Tn. The sun was out and we finally got ... read more

Marion County Park If God can take the seventh day off, I don't see why we can't - so we did! Yesterday was a down day. We turned off the alarm and just slept. Didn't stir until around 9:00. Got up, wrote my post, caught up on Facebook and the news and suddenly it is 11:30. Made a fine bacon and egg breakfast - or more appropriately, brunch - walked the dogs and suddenly... I'm tired again. One of the blessings of getting older - you can take a nap without folks thinking you're lazy. So we took a nap until about 3 when I disappeared for my shower. We were promised that the showers here were really very good, but I guess we shouldn't expect much for $18/day. The bathroom was huge enough, and the ... read more
