Tom and I are now about 70 years old, and this summer are heading north for our second trip to Canada, Alaska, and the western “lower 48”. We’ve recently traded our trusty 2004 Lance truck camper and Dodge truck for a 28 foot Phoenix Cruiser motorhome, so prep work this time involves getting a new recreational vehicle (RV) set up and equipped. Tom does the techy stuff; I do the kitchen, bath and décor stuff. Maggie is purely decorative. It’s worked pretty well so far. Current plans call for us to drive to Canada through Michigan and travel west on the Trans-Canada Highway. We’ll be able to explore the northern coast of Lake Superior and visit Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which we haven’t visited yet, as well as Alberta. We’ll catch the Alaska Highway at its Dawson ... read more

Hi guys: We have finally kicked off our 2018 Great America Road Trip. We conceived this idea back in January when I closed the purchased of a new Acura RDX. We have a tradition of breaking in our new vehicles with a fun and exciting road trip. The first two were in Europe followed by trip to Massachusetts in 2016 in my new Nissan Rogue. I had many ideas for this trip including a drive all the way to Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore. Finally we decided that if we drove too far the return trip would be difficult. So, we decided on a North-South drive estimated to be approximately 2800 miles with visits to cities which we have yet to visit together in the past. Plus, our next door neighbors in Atlanta, Charlie and Sharon Trense, ... read more

Hi all Sorry it has been so long since our last blog. Regrettably it turned out that our motel in Orlando, where we booked for 5 days, had non-existent WiFi in the room and barely working in reception. In fact it lacked in many ways, particularly no fridge nor microwave. But for this blog we have jumped 10 days or so to update regarding Hurricane Irma. We will blog for the intervening days shortly. At the end of the last blog we were 'fleeing' Hurricane Harvey which was wreaking havoc in SE Texas. We gave some facts on Harvey at the last blog. We have since learnt that around half a million cars were written off due to flooding! Along with thousands of properties, and sadly 42 lives. Jumping forward to today, Friday 8 September, and ... read more

As opposed to the other blog, this is a shortened bulleted version of different and unique things that happened on the trip: We had an Uber driver in Memphis that cursed, sped. We were able to get the fee waived because of the inappropriate driver There was a guy at Avis that did this raunchy hand shtup gesture New Elvis hotel near Graceland to do hookups per the Avis guy Woman very knowledgeable at the rental car place could have been the mother of the inappropriate guy. Car Museum at Graceland, as well as who Elvis Influenced Mud River Island Park Monorail - older guy with this very young girl and one kid. David here... The journey into Kentucky was around 2 hours. We stopped at yet another Walmart for supplies, including vodka and more bourbon as this Walmart, unusually, had a liquor store attached. We also managed to download Amazon Music and a few of our albums onto the tablet so we had some music for the evenings. We were staying in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The pitch was among the trees on a gravel pad and quite secluded. It was early evening when we arrived so wandered down to the lake and around the area before settling down at camp for the evening. We had pasta bolognese, and drank beer and spirits, listening to Iron Maiden. A pretty good way to spend any evening. We also had lots of insects visiting us to keep us company. ... read more

We are in this area to visit Memphis, but the Shack Up Inn is 80 miles south of there, so we have treated our visit as a day trip. Our main target in Memphis was the National Civil Rights Museum, built in the Lorraine Motel where Dr Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968. It was superb. When we bought our tickets we were told it would take around 2 hours. We took almost 5!!! And still didn't read everything. It traces the struggle for equality in the USA from the early days of slavery to approx year 2001, so could do with a little updating. Naturally a prime focus was on the life, preaching and assassination of MLK, which was really well done, with a detailed display showing three main 'who done it' lines of ... read more
