After debating on whether or not to even go to this event, I decided to just go for it. Waking up at 5 AM after having only 2 hours of sleep (from too much excitement), I ate breakfast, chugged a much needed cup of coffee, and started my 2 1/2 hour trek to Nashville Music City Center (NMCC) in Nashville. The first half of my journey started out with heavy fog with a gorgeous view of the large full moon that would peek through the fog every so often. As I neared Nashville, I grabbed food and another cup of coffee from McDonald's, as well as gassed up so I wouldn't have to deal with it when it was time to head home. I arrived at NMCC and ended up just parking at the venue for ... read more

So the trip started off great with princes hot chicken. The best fried chicken I've ever had and as a fat guy I've had plenty of fried chicken. Next it was on to the Nashville strip for some country bar hopping. Mike was drinking terrible beer all night (Miller high life and PBR) and I stuck to local whisky. Mike found his favorite special fried bologna sandwich and a PBR for $5. Great bands doing all kinds of country but certainly the old school country is far better than the new age country. To cap the night off mike met his favorite president (see pictures) ... read more

Well I can't quite believe we are all packed up ahead of our final night in Nashville. We have had such a great time here but it's time to move from music to a bit of history next I feel! We spent yesterday morning on Bill Demain’s Walkin’ tour of Nashville. This was a repeat from 2 years ago but didn't disappoint at all. Our guide is a self confessed music geek with an encyclopaedic knowledge of many genres but specialising in the history of music in Nashville. There were about 20 of us on the tour. Before we set off Bill met each one of us individually, asking us what brought us to Nashville and where we were from. Throughout the tour he referred directly to individuals within the group if he thought the subject ... read more

Leaving Vegas at 5 AM on a Sunday morning we were surprised to see how busy the strip still was. Busier still was the airport. This was our first ever internal flight so quite an experience. I was nervous to be honest, thinking that being non-nationals would cause problems for us. It couldn't have mattered less! Check in and security were thorough but very efficient with no needless queuing or hanging around. We flew with Southwest Airlines. Facing a 3 ½ hour flight I was apprehensive to say the least. There's been a lot of negative press about practices on American Airlines lately and I was expecting a fairly basic service. Bill had pre booked preferred seating for which, in hindsight, I was really grateful. There are no seat allocations but having this extra meant that ... read more

We made reasonable time to Nashville and stopped as always for dinner at Prince's Hot Chicken Shack. As we walked in I thought we were in luck, there was no line and we walked right up and ordered. Tyler and I split a Medium spice half chicken, Caroline had a Mild breast as did Joyce and Vallery got her breast unseasoned. As we located a table to sit and wait for our food to come out I recognized the family in line behind us. It was Todd and Shonda, the Chi Alpha pastors who had lived 2 doors down from my parents when I was in high school. I introduced them to Caroline and Abcde and chatted with them for a little while. Then Abcde wanted to run around so I escorted her up and down ... read more

Geo: 36.1682, -86.7772UA routed us to Nashville. It was a 4.5 hours from San Francisco to Nashville. The time seemed to go by quickly. Glenn and I both took about a 1 hour nap for our flight from SFO to BNA.While in BNA (Nashville), I had enough time to go buy "something better than chips". While Glenn was charging up the iphones, I walked down the terminal to find a "fast food" place. I found Popeyes. I had ordered 2 separate meals, because I knew Glenn and I would probably be not sitting next to each other. Sadly, I ordered 2 drinks...but really didn't need two DRINKS, so as we were getting organized again with our carryon luggage, I handed one of the drinks to a passenger walking through the terminal. He was grateful. We did fly ... read more

Hello to anyone still reading this and thank you for letting me bore you with my holiday spam! In fact, we've been having too much fun and packing our days full of activities for me to fit in time to write about it all - probably for the best really! Well, I left you all as we arrived in Music City - Nashville, Tennessee. It is big and built up and brash - and currently rapidly expanding with 120 new arrivals every day! We thought it would just be young hopefuls, with nothing but a backpack and a guitar, with a head full of songs for the broken-hearted and hope of being spotted and making it in one of the biggest businesses in the USA. In fact, the number 1 industry in Nashville is healthcare - ... read more

As we left Nashville today, I was contemplating the things we have learned about the this famous city: There is live music everywhere! I knew Nashville was nicknamed “Music City”, and I have had many people tell me that there is live music all over. But I never realized quite what they meant. You can walk down one of the main streets of downtown (Broadway) and literally every second storefront is a bar or saloon that is featuring live music. Any day of the week, all afternoon and evening, these places, most of them with doors and windows wide open, seem to compete with each other to see who can crank their speakers up the loudest. From country (of course), to rock, dance, blues, jazz and even some pop (although usually countrified), there is a genre ... read more

The last few days have been spent cruising up the Cumberland River towards Nashville and anchoring in little coves or inlets overnight. We had planned to leave Green Turtle Bay on Wednesday, however, one thing you quickly learn about life goes on a boat is that plans change (which is great for me, as I love change). On Wednesday, we ended up heading back into the marina to take some led lights to James (we had some extras of on board) and pick up some tools we had lent to Andrew and Jack. What was planned as a short trip turned into a longer visit (time flies when you are enjoying yourself!). Part way through the morning, it was decided that Nancy and James (“Living Life”) with their boys were going to come out and anchor ... read more
