Geo: 36.1682, -86.7772For DH, the number one attraction of Nashville was the potential ogling of Cowboys in tight jeans, but for me it was the potential of a visit to the Grand Ole Opry. Because of popularity, the Grand Ole Opry abandoned its more intimate downtown theatre (that was also a church in an earlier incarnation) for a larger venue in the suburbs. But in the slower Winter season the show is moved back to the more intimate/authentic Ryman Auditorium and we were fortunate enough to grab a couple of last minute tickets. The downtown of Nashville plays up the country theme with an overpopulation of saloons housing live country bands, wanna-be Cowboys/cowgirls, and Texas style drinking. After a day of marching DH around on her tight jean research mission. I did manage to talk her ... read more

We hit Nashville last week going from North Carolina over the north side of the Smoky Mountains. The bummer was it rained the whole drive and it was a horrible day for photography.. Boo. We survived a couple of days in the low 30s in Nashville and were just glad we did not see any snow. Time to head south... We spent one day in downtown Nashville and saw the Country Music Hall of Fame. Another day we spent in Lynchburg where we visited the Jack Daniel's Distillery. It's was a very interesting place and the honey whiskey was pretty darn good. The locals suggest using the honey whiskey instead of vanilla in recipes. Christmas dinner is going to be good this year.. Wink, wink!! The town was a fun little place to shop, too. Next ... read more

"He says" This will be more relaxed reflections as we have good wifi and are stationary for a few days which means I can take the time to think about where we have been..... The further south we have gone the more the country is truly remarkable with rolling hills and forests that are display in brilliant colours as fall approaches. The most interesting thing is the people we encounter who exude a quiet charm of relaxed friendliness....."how yall doin....ain't this a great day".... in a deep southern drawl that makes me feel I'm in a movie set about the South. I still find it hard to believe Sue and I are in Tennesse.....there are many African Americans as we slowly funnel south and I love their southern expressions and can stand off to the side ... read more

It was cool. Looks like most but gigantic. There are the typical fishponds only way bigger. They actually have pontoon boats in the water. They have alligators. It has an elevator in the middle that goes to the top to an observation deck. Yes we are boring as we did not feel it necessary to pay 10 dollars a person to see Memphis from the top of a pyramid. The kids didn't show interest either. ... read more

Elvis Country...where he was born, where he lived & where he died. What A Legend! He was before my time but I think every soul on this planet loves him & has been influenced by him & his music. And OMG what a Hottie! He was born very poor in a tiny working class town called Tupelo, Mississippi. He had a twin who was stillborn. Imagine if there had been 2 of him! Wanted a gun for his 11th birthday but his very influential mother bought him a guitar instead...thank fuck for that! He was a millionaire by the age of 22 in 1957 & purchased Graceland in Memphis Tennessee for $100k. It is an amazing place. Steeped in EP memorabilia & hideously decorated but his music is perennial & the Theatre tour was The Best... ... read more

Time to discover Nashville. First I feel I should explain a little about why we chose to come here in the first place. Music has always been important for both of us, but more rock than country to be honest. Having said that, the scene in Bob's Country Bunker has always been one of my favourite bits of The Blues Brothers. As I've "matured" though I've come to appreciate some more modern artists such as Jace Everett and Eric Church and enjoy a song about beer, break ups, or both as much as the next woman. As lovers of music in general a destination where so much of it is an integral part of its fabric seemed a natural choice. We started our first day with a two hour walking tour of downtown Nashville. Our guide ... read more

Before we embark on stage 5 of our adventure a few more words about Pigeon Forge. I really should have mentioned that one of the unique features of Dollywood was the age of the staff. Anyone who frequents theme parks will be familiar with the band of "enthusiastic" youths who normally shrug punters onto rides. Not at Dollywood. Oh no. Their employment criteria would appear to be something along the lines of if you are too old and infirm to ride the thrill rides then this is the place for you! I doubt we saw any employee under the age of 60 - many appeared well over 80 and some had walking aids. Very helpful of course but quite unexpected in a theme park... The other issue I haven't touched upon is that parts of Tennessee ... read more

Round Robin Quilt - Betty (Mom's) Reveal This is it … the final reveal! Some of you have indicated that this has just been plain torture to wait so long for the last quilt …. Sorry! But I have to say I have absolutely loved every minute of this last year working on these quilts, and knowing that with this blog it all draws to a close I have tried to extend the fun for just a bit longer. Before I turn this blog over to Mom to close us out, I do have to do some name dropping. First, just in case any of our dear husbands read this – (what are the odds? HA!), all of us want to thank them for the patience that they have had over this last year. We have ... read more
