Tanya took me to the Greyhound Bus station in Pensacola. When I found out the station itself wasn't even open, I should have known I was in for a weird trip to Greenville, SC. Leaviing at 6:40pm, I arrived in Mobile to await my bus to Atlanta... at 11:35pm! At least this bus station was open, even the snack bar... all night! At this point, I started to discover the, shall we say variety of people that use Greyhound. All ages, sexes, and races, with a larger than normal dose of weird. Between a lady that chatted with me, then asked me to watch her bags while she went to the bathroom, then when asked where she was going, responded in all seriousness that "she shouldn't talk to strangers"! To the drunk that pulled up in ... read more

Monday, 1 June: My wife and I don't start our real vacation until Wednesday, so I have two days with my grandson Justing, my daughter Serena, and my son-in-law Jeremy. Somehow on the way up from Pensacola, a rather large crack showed up in the Jeep's windshield. After getting the windshield replaced, everyone but Jeremy, who had to work, went to the Greenville Zoo for the day. Although the zoo is fairly small, it did have a nice assortment of animals, including elephants, giraffes, and lions. The place was well-maintained and nicely laid out. After a couple of hours wandering around the zoo, we ate lunch at a nearby park/playground, where Justing and us big kids had some fun, then headed home. Tuesday, 2 June The new HD video camera is great, but until I get ... read more

I have had quite a nice long break before I head to Uganda. I finished my classes for Fall semester almost 3 weeks ago and still have another 5 days or so before I begin my travels. Thus far, Valerie (my classmate who will be participating in the internship with me) and I have been scrambling trying to find housing since we received news that we would be based in Kampala (where it is much more expensive) as opposed to Mbale. For those of you who do not know, I will be traveling to Uganda from early January until mid May working with an organization called TASO (The AIDS Support Organization). It is an NGO indigenous to Uganda which began with a handful of volunteers who sought to increase care and support for people living with ... read more

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 The Reunion Today was the ultimate climax to our adventure. We had great fun in Europe and driving there was an adventure. But spending the day in Greenville at the BMW Performance School was a top thrill for me and Jackie. As I reported yesterday, we drove from Atlanta to Greenville, SC and spent the night at the Marriott. The drive was about two hours, about 100 miles. After our endurance driving in Europe, this was nothing. We drove up in my Toyota Highlander, with Ursula at the GPS. After a nice breakfast, we followed a van from the hotel to the Performance Center. It is a short drive from the hotel. Upon arrival at the visitor center we were ushered into a classroom for some briefing and signing waiver documents. Yes, ... read more

Monday, August 18, 2008 Hello family and friends, Did you think that our journey was over? No way. There is still one important last step. It is time to re-acquaint ourselves with our new, or almost new, BMW. We had bonded with our new car in Europe and now really miss seeing and driving her. We have been back to the USA since Saturday, June 28th. Tomorrow we will spend the day at the BMW factory in Greenville, SC. There is a complete day planned for us. We start at 8:00am and finish at 3:00pm. It should be great fun touring the factory and then learning about the performance characteristics of our vehicle and then testing it on the BMW performance track. So, let’s get started. We have been excited about this final trip for weeks. ... read more

On Wednesday, July 9th we left my mom's house in Greenville. The boys' were sad to leave the pool and Devin was especially sad to leave the good food. We have managed to eat food packed by mom for the past 1.5 days so Devin has not had to go back to eating ham slices out of a plastic bag:) We decided to go a bit north from Greenville yesterday and visit the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. This would have been a more adult visit since we were touring the estate that George Vanderbilt built in the late 1800's. It compared to palaces that I've visited in Europe. Enormous, spacious, sophisticated and gorgeous. Devin liked the visit and Nick was only excited about the cinnamon bun he bought at the bakery. It was a good ... read more

We arrived at my mothers' house in Greenville, SC on Sunday, July 6th in the mid afternoon. We drove from Roanoke, VA to Greenville with stops at the state welcome centers in hopes of a nice blue swimming pool... and we were not disappointed. Within a 1/2 hour of pulling into the driveway the boys had found all of the pool toys and were busy splashing around. In fact I don't think they got out of the pool until 7pm. We have had great food...mom's are great for that...BBQ'ed ribs, homemade whoopie pies, potato salad, cole slaw, etc. Devin had stated that this is the best food he has had in a week and he may be right. The RV does not have quite the same capabilities as a normal kitchen, we haven't even tried the ... read more

We arrived a couple of days early in Greenvile, was great getting there before the crowds. Gave us an opportunity to have some down time and to check out the local sights and food. Pearl and Roy were the first to arrive had dinner with them at "Sticky Fingers" what an awesome place. Wonderful ribs and pulled pork. We couldn't believe Roy ate his whole dinner by himself and not sharing with Pearl ..... the manager was great stopped by to talk to us and when we were ready to leave he give us both a 6 pack of rib sauces. There are so many Gold Wing Trikes arriving, we have never seen so many trikes in one place at the same time. This is the largest Wing Ding that I have seen in many years ... read more
