Well, tomorrow we start our Petty Vacation 2023. We'll be going from Greenville South Carolina to Valencia, then along the eastern and southern coast of Spain to Gibraltar. We catch flight tomorrow morning (at 6am!) to Detroit, where we have an 11 hour layover. Yes, 11 hours! Next, we leave from Detroit for Paris France, with another layover, this time only 7 hours... only! Finally, at about 2pm Tuesday, we take our final flight to Valencia Spain. We'll spend a few days in Valencia, then travel to Alicante, where a couple from my Camino Frances 2017 live. Next we go to Murcia for a couple days, then Cartagena for a couple more days. Then we'll be staying in Malaga for 6 days. In Malaga we'll be meeting my niece Salome, to spend some time with her. ... read more

My daughter Tanya and her boyfriend Ben came at 8:30 to take us to GSP Airport. We arrived at GSP and checked in. I had been worried about my passport, since it expired right around the 6 month time frame I read about. Apparently I was wrong or it was okay. The other thing I was worried about was our backpacks being too big, but apparently no problem there either. We then went up to go thru TSA. I had to be padded down because I didn’t think I had to remove any non-metal items, but the rule was to remove everything. Oh well. I had it easy compared to Manoli, because her bar of laundry soap keyed off the scanner and she had to have everything taken out of her backpack. We found our gate, ... read more

4-Day Trial Walk: Day 1: I left the house a bit later than I’d wanted to… about 9:30am. After parking my car in the Hertz garage at Greenville Spartanburg Airport (GSP), I rode back home with my wife, get my stuff together and started walking around 11am. After walking through our lovely neighborhood, I continue down Neely Farm Road, past W. Georgia Road, until I decided to take a break at the SpinX gas station on E. Standing Springs Road around 12:30pm, where I took my shoes off while I enjoyed a Cheerwine Icee or Slurpee. Can you say brain freeze? LOL Along the way I met a little friend on the side of the road, see the photo. Fortunately although the snake had its head reared up and mouth open, it was quite dead. My ... read more

Well, this is it folks: the final leg of our Travels with Tortuga Tour. After a year and a half, 22,000 miles, (and only four countries visited!), Fi and I managed to limp our aging truck & camper to South Carolina, where she's safely tucked away in my parents' storage garage. It's been a wonderful trip - we've seen some incredible places, have made some lifelong friends along the way, and also found a place to call home in beautiful Ecuador. Tortuga Tour may be over, but we have a lot to look forward to in the near future...more of that later. Since Arizona, we plodded upwards to Zion National Park, then through Utah and into Colorado, where we spent some time mountain biking in Fruita, and visiting friends in Pagosa Springs and Colorado Springs before ... read more

Geo: 34.848, -82.4003Ummmm....okay....this is one of our two remaining relaxing "down" days (the other one is tomorrow). So, wouldn't it be nice to drive to South Carolina? It is only nine hours or so. Well, sure, why not??About now you are probably convinced that Jeff and I are insane, but please reserve judgement until I've explained. Earlier in this trip I mentioned that my family is from the South. Greenville/Simpsonville, South Carolina to be exact. I belong to an ENORMOUS extended family and out of those hundreds of family members, my mom, dad, two brothers and I are the only leaves on this family tree that have ever lived north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Yes, we observe the Mason-Dixon Line.We moved away, before I was born, and never moved back. Everyone else in the clan still ... read more

We're just getting ready to leave for our two month trip West and back. We plan to see as many of the National Parks as we can and hope we will be able to get into Yosemite in spite of the fires there now. It will be our first long trip in our new (to us) Winnebago motor coach. It's smaller than the 5th wheel we previously had, so it will be "cozy".Stay tuned for our blog posts over the next two months. Lindsay and Gail... read more
