It should have been self-evident that a two day train trip with a seventeen-month old held potential for trouble. First, he wasn't suitable for the dining car, but Amtrak serves sleeping car passengers in their compartments. The room was small, but certainly workable. Somehow the entry to the train felt a bit chaotic, but once we got started and caught our breath, we got to enjoy the scenery and begin exploring. First we wandered back to the Pacific Parlour Car (Amtrak uses the English spelling). My understanding is that this is a service in flux. The car has swivel arm chairs, booths, and bar tables. There's a bar at one end of the car that supplies juice and a snack bar in the middle of the car that serves muffins. The car is panelled in wood ... read more

Onaxthiel writes: Leaving Hood River in the morning showed that heading for a motel had probably been the right move. There was quite a bit of moisture on the ground from the nearly incessant rain the previous night. The dawn was looking promising though, with the sun out already and only partial cloud cover. Driving across the border into Washington again proved that the Pacific Northwest never really lost it's drizzle, but at least it was a mere drip this time, rather than the opening of the heavens we had experienced the day before. Our destinations for the morning were two sites we had seen on the map just about 30 miles inside the Washington border, Ice Caves and Lava Bridge. Both sounded interesting to us. The first town we passed through in Washington was called ... read more

Onaxthiel Writes: Our drive out of Uncle M's house took us through downtown Seattle one last time and gave us a another chance to view what all the people native to the area say isn't all that common and every visitor to the neighborhood tells us is constant. The rain was constant for the entire day. Sometimes it was a light mist, other times a torrent. But it was unremitting. Our only real stop was a waterfall along the Columbia river. The entire drive along the Washington/ Oregon border is striking, and Multnomah Falls are exceptional even in this region of beauty. The falls are recorded at the site as the second longest vertical drop in the U.S.. We have seen greater volumes of water pour off some falls, particularly in Yellowstone, but I think this ... read more

I leave in one week and have just started packing. All I can take is one backpack so I am trying to figure out what to bring. What do you need in new zealand? I'm thinking hiking boots and Glamdring - Sword of Gandalf (thats a little Lord of the rings joke). Anyway I can only fit four pairs of nikes so I'm pretty much f%#*ed. ... read more

Travel Trivia Question and it is an easy one. What is the picture of? And you can't say, "a field." It's a specific type of field. Bonus Question: Where was this picture taken. As in, state and location within the state. The most specific answer wins so adding cities, towns, etc. to your answer will improve your chances, or not, depending. Cannon Beach! with Aubrey, Crystal, Sonora & Austin This trip was definately unplanned, but a blast. Only two hours away from where I live, it is a beautiful place to just go and take in the beauty of God's creation. Haystack Rock is definately magnificent in all of its huge-ness and splendor and creates an atmosphere that is truly unique. I needed to go to the beach - to breathe in the cool September sea breeze air and feel the ice cold ocean stir sand across my feet. It was an escape from my ordinary, which made the trek there worthwhile. Spending it with cousins also made it enjoyable. We went to Dooger's Restaurant after we watched the beautiful sunset and I had a grilled cheese sandwich. Tasty! The night was perfect. I love Oregon with ... read more

We write from the Prospect Inn and Motel, a Historic Inn on route 62 to Crater Lake. We are in the Zane Grey Room (he apparently stayed here). I don't think I've ever read a Zane Grey novel but that wasn't a requirement. I thought I would recap our trip over the last week or so. After we left the Hoh Rainforest, home of the Banana Slug, we hit parts of the Washington coast on our way to Astoria, OR. The WA coast, where accessible, is mostly shallow inlets and mudflats, filled with Canada Geese, ducks and herons. Not quite as scenic as Oregon's. The area, in general, appeared somewhat economically hard-hit with shacks and trailer parks. Maybe the decrease in logging has caused problems (although you wouldn't know it from the number of trucks on ... read more

Who would've thought that you couldn't find wi-fi on the beach in Oregon? Well, we've had a tough time. Reason: coffee kiosks. With a kiosk every block there are no coffee shops, the home of wi-fi nationwide. So we have finally found one in Reedsport, our last stop on the coast (probably--but who knows, it's early in the day). We are heading to Crater Lake either today or tomorrow. Camping the first night where it is projected to be in the 20s. That will be our coldest night yet so we'll see how it goes. The pay off is that after that we're setting up in a B&B for a couple nights to rest. So while freezing we will have that to look forward to. Saw some Gray Whales off the coast yesterday and today viewed ... read more

It seems that no matter where we go there is road construction. Yesterday we couldn't get into Oregon because it was closed. Sorry! Actually it was just the bridge from WA but it has become a joke. No matter how small the town, there is road construction. Orange barrels rule America! Thanks for the info. Windie. We were in Astoria last night, which seemed pretty nice. Cannon City is close by so we'll check it out today. We drove along Lake Crescent twice going to Olympic but we didn't stay there. Maybe next time. It reminded us of Loch Lomand in Scotland (except the hills had trees instead of being bare). Olympic was great. We had marvelous views of Mt. Olympus and the Olympic Range and did two hikes in the rain forest. Incredible! I cannot ... read more
