9-6-07 I got up and worked on the computer for awhile. Lana called down to me and said she would be ready to play tennis soon as we discussed the prior night. I got ready and we headed out. Lana had recently got some tennis rackets and was wanting to try them out. We had a great time hitting the ball back and forth without being too serious. Just trying to get a little bit of a workout in. A friend of Lana’s stopped by and we talked to her as we played. She too was an independently employed and I jokingly ask them if everyone around here is independently wealthy. These two ladies are really underspoken and very modest with regards to talking about their travels. Lana has been all over as has her friend. ... read more

This morning, while Marc takes Alan to a secret coastal destination for a sunrise photo shoot, I blissfully sleep in. Alan meets Marc at a state park where they don headlamps and scurry beneath dense vegetation before scrambling down a steep slope to a narrow ledge overlooking the Pacific Ocean far below. Their destination? The cauldron. “If I had seen the trail in the daylight, I might have declined,” Alan says. They continue their journey, finally reaching the rocky shore. Alan makes it safely down only to slip on a rocky tidal pool meaning he spends the morning shoot in wet clothes. Luckily, his camera suffers no damage. From viewing the photos that Alan took, I can see the trip was worth it. Unfortunately, he is shooting in RAW format so no photos on the blog ... read more

We headed for Coos Bay today and a campground nearby to the Honda dealer we found that will service the van. We drove out about 13 miles to Cape Arago, a nice stretch of beach with some smaller rocks in the ocean. We came to a look out with quite a few people and a terrible racket coming from the rocks below. We looked out and saw a colony of sea lions - hundreds of them basking on the rocky ledges. There were three types - elephant head, California and Golden Sea Lions. We saw new baby ones lying on the rocks also. What a nice surprise for us. We saw a picturesque lighthouse along the beach also. WE came back into town and found the dealer and then we found an electronic repair placed that ... read more

When Alan arranged a one-on-one photography workshop with landscape photographer, Marc Adamus, he told him, “take us off the beaten path.” Marc took the comments seriously. Marc uses a 5.4-mile hike on the Nature Conservancy’s property at Cascade Head near Lincoln City to get acquainted with us. Although it’s Alan’s workshop, Marc graciously agrees that I can tag along. While Alan and Marc discuss photography, Marc judges our fitness level. When the hike begins on a downhill slope, I make a mental note that the uphill return will be a killer. The trail is shaded by new and old growth forest. We walk on a path cushioned by evergreen needles until it is necessary to negotiate mud puddles or large tree trunks that have fallen across the path. Marc points out an elk track in the ... read more

We decided to stay in Cape Perpetua another day. We found a Honda dealer in Coos Bay - about 73 miles from here - any we really need to get the van serviced. Today being Labor Day we decided to take a holiday. We walked the beach trail at Smelt Beach. The ocean pounds against the rocks here sending spray into the air. There is a blow hole, where the water comes in under the rocks and blows high into the air. There was literally a “glass house” on the beach, at least the side facing the ocean. You could see every room and every ugly piece of modern, yet worn furniture and even the resident in her sweats. In the afternoon we drove south along 101 and found a beautiful lighthouse at Heceta Head. When ... read more

Deidre and I are packed and bound for Europe; Cologne, Germany to be exact. Towels in hand. Our flight leaves at 0730. We make a brief stop in Newark, New Jersey and fly over the Atlantic pond. Upon our arrival into Cologne, we go to the Dom Cathedral. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's largest cathedrals. It is an excellent display of gothic architecture and contains both a 42 ton pipe organ and supposedly the remains of the Three Magi in a shrine in the east apse behind the alter. After a brief climb to the top of one of the spires, we head south to Koblenz to drive by (and possibly take a tour) of the Koblenz Castle. This castle sits upon a island in the middle of the Rhein ... read more

Continuing along the Oregon Coast after breakfast at the campsite, we saw more beautiful and stunning coastline. We watched boaters launching their boats off the sandy beach. One I saw, had three men that pushed it out every time a wave came in. Took them at good 4 or 5 waves to get it deep enough for them to get into boat. We found that the Oregon coast is mostly public and free. The governor at the turn of the century had the foresight to pass legislation to keep the coastline open to everyone. As you drive the 300 plus miles along the coast, a minimum of every 15-20 miles (a lot of times only 5 miles) there is a state park, a picnic area and or public beach access. We saw lots of horses riding ... read more

We drove to Oregon Coast today to do another optional activity, which everyone participated in, a Sand Dunes tour. We arrived at our campsite to find they didn’t really have anywhere for us to camp so they threw us in the corner near the storage sheds and tractors. It wasn’t a big deal, we set up our tents and got our gear ready for the Sand Dunes. Jon warned us that if we do take our camera, to put it in a bag because sand is going to get everywhere, he wasn’t kidding. We arrived at this fun park place which had things like mini-golf, boat rides etc. We bought our tickets for the tour and had to drive down the road to the starting point. I was so excited this was going to be awesome. ... read more

On our way to Oregon, we stopped at Chinook Harbor and Fort Columbia in Washington. After we crossed over the Astoria bridge into Oregon, we visited Fort Stevens. There was a shipwreck on shore, the Peter Iredale. It must be at least 200 feet long with most of it buried under the sand. We saw the Columbia river entrance from the south side and the extensive jetty repair they are doing. Then we drove down the rocky coast. It's almost unbelievable the number and the size and dimensions of the rocks that just pop out of the ocean along the coast. We didn't drive very far today, we are just so fascinated with this beautiful coast. We found a campsite at Cape Lookout State Park, which was right on the ocean. We walked the beach and ... read more
