We had a WHITE CHRISTMAS after all! So exciting! It was Christmas like it is in all the movies, and like it would have been for my Dad when he was a little kid in Scotland. Jane and Paul had some friends over and cooked a big lamb roast and a nut roast for those non-meat eaters (whoever they might be), and it was all fun and games. It was great seeing Attikus open all his presents. I haven’t had a Christmas with little kids for as long as I can remember, and it is definitely a day for little kids. When it is just a bunch of adults, it always seems like there is something lacking or missing… On Boxing day, Jono and I went into town to explore the City a little, and… ok, ... read more

Jono and I planned a while back to go to Portland to have (a white) Christmas and New years with my old uni pal, Jane, her husband Paul and their two kids - Attikus and Aislinn. We were planning to drive, but our car broke down at the start of December, so we bought ourselves bus and train tickets. We decided it would be nice to break the journey in Seattle, spending an afternoon and a night checking out the City a little more and then catching the train onwards the next day to Portland. It turned out to be fortuitous that we arranged it this way, even though it didn’t go to plan, ‘cause at least we did not miss our connecting train… We got to the Greyhound bus depot in Vancouver at about 7:45am, ... read more

Eugene is the home the University of Oregon which is noted for its Art programs. When you arrive, the first thing you might notice is a lot of community art everywhere. So, I took a day and just walked around downtown taking pictures of this or that - whatever caught my interest. The camera had a smudge on the lens - something I didn't notice until later. Sorry about that.... read more

It's been a while since I've last updated my blog..maybe a month or so. I've had some downtime recently to write about my last couple of trips and my time back home. However; the universe had different plans for me. First off, after my last trip I still hadn't heard back from the guy from the dog sledding place, so that job feel through. I had already asked for that time off work , at least the month of December, so I had to figure out what I wanted to do for the month until I got back on trail on January 2nd. I didn't really have the money to drive home. A co-worker Corey had 3 weeks off so we decided to travel around together to save on gas and other expenses so we headed ... read more

On the road to Portland, we wanted Talula to get out and run around to expense some of her energy, so we stopped at a rest stop around Roseburg, Oregon. However, she was off the leash and decided to find a pile of crap to role in and eat. It was not fun to wash her with bottles of our water in the freezing cold. She was so bitter for the ride up to Portland. We arrived in Portland last night to a heavy downpour of rain. The foreshadowing couldn't have been more perfect. I woke up this morning to Jason telling me to get up because someone broke into the car. We parked in a gated parking garage in our friends apartment building, thinking it would be safe. Some tool smashed the rear window out ... read more

We are out of our house and on the move, and we will be leaving Oregon Saturday, Dec. 7. We first head to Texas to see Amy's family, then we're off to Washington, D.C., and finally arriving in Ireland on Dec. 17. We had thought that would just be a short trip to Ireland to scope out cities before we headed to Spain for a term, since there is a hiring freeze for Ireland's national health system until at least the first of the year, maybe later. But if you know anything about our plans, you know they change hourly, as they did when Amy got a call from her recruiter with a great opportunity in Cork with a private non-profit employer to start ASAP. We don't know if that will come through or not, but ... read more

This cold is kicking my ass. I saw an ad on myspace for a cough syrup called "Buckley's" that I decided I wanted to try out. I went to the nearby Walgreens and got a prescription of Zithromax (I had one left) in case this cold turns into pneumonia (that happens a lot with me). While there, I picked up a combination lock as well. I must say the Buckley's stuff DOES taste really bad, but did help a fair bit. I grudgingly give it my approval. When I got back, Happy had made some vegetable soup/stew for everyone. It was pretty good. I suspect I'll just read for the rest of the night. I picked up Ray Bradbury's "The Machineries of Joy", which looks to be a compilation of short stories. I also posted to ... read more

Still sick today, but didn't want to stay indoors, so I took the bus down to Portland's Science Center. You know... every city has one of these places where the kids can go on field trips. Here, it is called OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry). It was fun, though typical. They had the regular mathematical brain teaser puzzles, touch and play phisics exhibits, and a life sciences area. There was this one cool liquid they had though! A ferrous (sp?) liquid that reacts to magnetism like iron does. It moves around like mercury. The other exhibit that was impressive was a week-by-week showing of how humans grow within the womb... with REAL embryos and fetuses (they had died prematurely due to accidents and the like). Unfortunately I forgot to take some pictures, so if ... read more
