Well today is the first entry of many I hope in what will be my greatest adventure yet. That is not saying much in that so far my adventures have been small but exciting. Enough of the past and lets look only to the future! So far I have bought a map; applied for my passport (BAD PHOTO!); and pushed in a few pins into that map of places I would like to see. Of course these places are the obvious ones that all virgin travelers want to visit. As we move forward and my research continues so to will my choices in locals that I hope will inspire and humble me into this worlds history and future. Here I go! ... read more

Bend is a city sitting at 4000 feet in the high desert in Oregon, around 2-3 hours drive from Portland. The scenery is pretty wicki wicki wild wild west round here. Bend is a bit of an MTB mecca in the US but doesn't seem to hold the status in the UK of Moab in Utah or Fruita in Colorado. Like Whistler it has numerous shops where a great trail map is available with topography, recommended routes etc, we didn't get lost once and minimum stopping to read the map was required. I imagine Bend would be popular with the singletrack type crowd too, lots of nice eateries, a great sandwich and bottle shop with a cycling theme and several local breweries that sell jerseys with their brew names on. There are loads of bikes in ... read more

Its amazing to me how quickly this has all happend. It seems like not too long ago when this was all just a dream floating around in my head. I have a couple more nights before I leave. Bags are packed. Tickets are printed. Passport still doesn't look anything like me. Just counting the hours until I leave. Who would have know I would have been a candidate for travel anxiety. I can't wait for the State Fair, what a hell of way to be leaving. Heading out on the coat tails of Gary Allen and loads of deep fried twinkies. ... read more

Hi all. Sorry its been a while. Ok, where to start. Shortly after our last blog entry our plans changed and after a quick drop in to London, we set off in the car with Vic (Amy's sister) and her boyfriend Marcus to drive to San Sebastian in Spain via Bordeaux for a bit of wine tasting and good food. San Sebastian is beautiful with fantastic sandy beaches and waves surrounded by hills and combined with a really pretty old town full of pintxos bars (bars dedicated to Basque style tapas and cider). However, what San Sebastian is really known for is being the hometown of the Urrestarazu clan and it was great to be able to visit all the family. It also gave us a good opportunity to keep up our spanish and practice on ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Astoria August 21st 2008

The Oregon coast is renowned for its ruggedly picturesque border with the Pacific. We will have to take this for granted because when we drove down it, the weather was horrific with gales, driving rain and not enough blue sky to make even a sailor's hankie, let alone trousers. However all was not lost as there was a secondary reason for our visit. A few hours south of Seattle is the small coastal town of Astoria, which has pimped itself to Hollywood on amny an occasion, and has hence appeared in a number of celluloid horrors such as Short Circuit (Number 5 Alive!), Kindergarten Cop and Free Willy. However it redeems itself as the setting for possibly the greatest childrens adventure movie ever, The Goonies . Written by Speilberg, a bunch of kids (The Goonies) go ... read more

As soon as the Amtrak Coast Starlight departed Portland's Union Station, we First Class (Sleeper) passengers were treated to a special wine tasting in the Club Car; what a great way to start our trip and meet fellow travellers. Met a group of teachers travelling from Alabama to San Diego, by train the whole way. They had been on the train for four days by then. While sipping and talking our dinner reservations are taken. First seating preferrence to us again--gee beats airline food! The miles and miles of flat Oregon farmland slipped under the quiet wheels of the train. So many small towns; so different than our island home. After dinner our beds were turned down and we turned in. In the middle of the night, it was absolutely silent; it woke me up. We ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Medford August 19th 2008

Medford is the western terminus of State Highway 62 - the Crater Lake Highway - and the western anchor for my research. The road has been straightened, widened, and realigned over its nearly 100 year existence but for the most part, modern travelers to Crater Lake follow the same route that the early stagecoaches and auto tourists used in the beginning of the 20th Century. The road passes through a handful of small communities, most of which have faded into the side of the road as time and tourists have rolled on - though a few have improved their standing with natural amenity related developments. The area had been based in timber during past decades but with the decline of the large scale timber economies in the west (due mostly to regulations) many towns and counties ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Crater Lake August 19th 2008

Crater Lake, OR I must admit, I had never heard of Crater Lake, OR; maybe that made it even better. The water was an intense blue color and the views were spectacular to say the least or at least that is what the video at the visitor’s center said. It rained very heavy both night's and was very foggy in the mornings. We went for a ride but the visibility was about 20 feet so we headed back to camp and cracked a few bottles of wine and just relaxed…… The weather cleared a little by mid day and we hiked one of the trails near our camp site (after all that wine we could only walk ….no driving) WHAT A WONDERFUL TRIP ! ... read more

North America » United States » Oregon » Crater Lake August 18th 2008

A three hour drive further east from Sutherlin, OR brought us to Crater Lake National Park. Crater Lake is basically an old Volcano that erupted about 7700 years ago, then collapsed in on itself and then filled up with rain and snow. It’s the deepest lake in the country and it probably the bluest lake we will ever see. We spent most of the day driving around the rim of the crater stopping at every single scenic overlook there was. At one point we hiked down to the water’s edge and actually jumped in the water. The water wasn’t as cold as we were expecting. We have definitely been in colder water but we didn’t stay in very long regardless. After the hike, we were sick of driving and taking pictures so we went to set ... read more

There's no better reason than a friend's wedding to take a road trip, especially when it means heading to the beach. Jeremy and I battled traffic getting out of Seattle's 90+ degree heat and headed to the much cooler North Oregon Coast for the weekend to attend Meche and Ryan's wedding. The wedding itself was touching and fun, complete with the crowd performing a rousing rendition of "Here Comes The Bride" with kazoos. That's right-- I said kazoos. The coast was covered by a misty fog that made it hard to see a few hundred feet down the sand, but it felt like we had the whole beach to ourselves. The reception was just as fantastic-- how can you beat a back-yard barbeque complete with home-made rasberry wine and microbrewed beer in mason jars? Jeremy even ... read more
