After a restful night at the Best Western at Agate Beach we started the day with a tour the Oregon Coast Aquarium. I touched sea stars and we walked through a 200 foot underwater tunnel with 3 different habitats. The seals were getting fed and the otters quickly became my new favorite animal. They way the lazily swim around on their back made me envious I wasn't in the water with them. Time for lunch and we finally got to eat at Mo's. There are several and we chose the original with the garage door where some lady drove through the wall 50 years ago so Mo just put in a garage door and painted a picture of her driving through it. World famous for their clam chowder and it was good. We them proceeded up ... read more

Geo: 44.0499, -123.089We are now in Eugene having spent five enjoyable but frustrating days in the USA. We landed in San Francisco with great expectations. Our Hotel, the Carlton was great and was within easy walking and Cable Car distance of all. The one drawback was that we did not have our luggage. We reported this through American Airlines and expected that it would arrive at any moment. However, we were determined it would not spoil our time here. On the first day we went to Fisherman's wharf. The original areas here were great but the new Pier 39 was much too touristy and over the top for us. We had a great lunch at Fisherman's Grotto, the original restaurant there where I had Dungeness Crab which is a specialty. The huge piles of them outside ... read more

After an hour at Acura of Portland, Sam and his technician informed us the adaptive cruise control was working fine even though they had no idea why it had not been. None the less, they assured us we would be able to tail gate safely across the great Northwest. Seeking serenity, we headed for some the oriental calm of the Japanese Garden at Washington Park. And it was serene. Feeling at one with nature, we strolled across the tennis courts to the International Rose Test Garden and enjoyed the sight and smell of thousands of roses in full bloom. Having nurtured our souls we needed to feed our stomachs and found the Newport Seafood Grill where Rodney had a salmon blt and I had risotto with scallops and prawns. Both were wonderful and would have been ... read more

After spending the night in La Grand, Oregon we learned that you cannot pump your own gas in Oregon. I was surprised to be as outraged that the attendant insisted on pumping the gas and cleaning the windshield now as I was that he would no longer do just that 30 years ago. With a full tank of gas and fresh big drinks, we headed for Portland traveling through Pendleton and down the Columbia River Gorge. The first stop was at the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute. I had picked up a brochure at the hotel and as we were passing it I asked Rodney to stop. Housed in a beautiful new building the exhibits included information about Lewis and Clark, the Oregon Trail, and the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla Tribes. We then drove down the Columbia ... read more

Our first stop this morning was to the Idaho State Capitol Building. It is under major renovations so we weren't able to go in it. Its a fairly typical looking capitol building. Guess we'll have to come back in 2010 to see the chambers. Then we headed to Baker City to see the Oregon Trail Interpretation Center. Baker City is a very old gold rush town with lots of historical buildings downtown. The Interpretation Center is out of town about 3 miles on a hill overlooking ruts left from the Oregon Trail. It was interesting to see what these settlers put up with to start a new life. But having seen a lot of Wagon Train growing up it was familiar. Then we drove through Hells Canyon. The overlook we went to was 6000 feet up ... read more

We said good bye to the house today. After a hectic 2 days of cleaning and last minute packing, we greeted the new owners and their family at 4pm and shortly thereafter said bon voyage to a cherished home. It really was a great place, everyone who came over loved it; the half acre lot, the mature trees, the privacy, the breeze that blew through the back yard, the birds, the quality craftsmanship and design...we will really miss it. But, onto new adventures! We plan on being in Portland through Thursday or Friday and then departing for parts east. We are probably going to need to pare down on what we are bringing with us. Right now we have the Yakima box full and a 2 foot high accumulation covering the rest of the van - ... read more

I’ve already mentioned (several times) my affinity for the ocean. After three days on the coast of Oregon and California, I found it hard to break away and head inland. It’s a benefit that the scenery in the Coast Ranges and the Cascades is noteworthy, or it would have been even more difficult to settle in there. There is another thing that this trip made me realize I would miss: the presence of eucalyptus. I’ve always liked the smell of eucalyptus. My favorite Yankee Candle scent is eucalyptus (and I was particularly upset at them for discontinuing the jar size in that scent). If I remember correctly, we used to have a vase of dried eucalyptus leaves in our house. I don’t know if it was that, or that as a young baby in Northern California ... read more

Fourth of July was a day to relax and enjoy the scenery along the Oregon coast. Through a couple of friends who had made a long road trip through the area a year ago, I had heard that Whaleshead Beach - a few miles up the coast from Harris Beach - was something to check out. Since I didn't have a campsite for the night yet (I was going day by day), I packed everything up and headed out around 10:30 in the morning. I stopped by the entrance station and asked about the chance of getting a spot for another night. Nothing was open yet, but 1 - 2 PM was the time I was told to stop back; by that point, some reservations may get canceled and they might be able to get me ... read more
