We landed in Newark, New Jersey on the afternoon of May 24th. After six months of traveling, Alex and I were very tired, and very broke. Both of us were looking forward to some serious couch time. We spent the next month or so relying on the excellent hospitality of Alex's dad Dean, and his wonderful wife Jennifer, eating their food, drinking their wine, and sleeping in their basement. We could not have asked for better hosts. While we were there, we took a family trip into New York City. We spent an afternoon in Central Park taking in the sites, I would also note that while we were staying in NJ, I had the fortune of eating a hot dog in front of the Statue of Liberty. We had originally planned to buy a car ... read more

And we're off . . . We've packed up our belongings (including all my shoes ... sniff), handed over the keys to our renters, been vaccinated against every disease known to man, bought out half of REI, and somewhat figured out how to "blog." We'll spend the next week or so in a hotel right here in our home city, getting used to life on the "road" and to foreign pillows. We're looking forward to updating this site starting the first week in October from Bali, Indonesia. From there, it's anybody's guess. ... read more

Hi All, It’s been awhile since my last post and I have covered some miles. From my last post, I bicycled up Vancouver Island to Port McNeill, (I originally planned on Port Hardy, but I ran out of daylight so Port McNeill it was!), to go sea kayaking and hopefully see Orca. Johnstone Straight is a popular area for whale watching as there’s a resident population as well as transient pods of Orca that travel the Straight regularly. Beautiful views of the coast range mountains on the ride up, but I rarely got more than a glimpse as most of the time it was foggy, overcast, and drizzly as is the norm for the north Island. In Port McNeill I called a kayak touring company in Port Hardy, but they didn’t have any day tours and ... read more

Fossil, Oregon to Blackfoot, Idaho Tuesday July 29th to Thurs July 31st Leaving Crater Lake, we felt lucky that our first day the air had been crystal clear, since on the 2nd it was a bit smoky from wildfires. This day, Tues July 29, we had a long driving day ahead of us. Headed for Bend, Oregon, and then up toward John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. With the information about the town of Fossil and an idea about going to the museum at John Day first, we headed up the highway, kids on Game Cube probably, Rollie driving and me either checking work e-mail and doing some edits/layout or blogging. High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon We had seen pamphlets for a museum, called the High Desert Museum, just south of Bend, and decided stopping ... read more

Today we finally hit the road! We got up bright and early at 6am, and hit the road at about 7:30. Nothing too exciting has happened today, just mostly cruising on the open road. Tonight the plan is to stay in a motel in Reno, so that puts us at about 500 miles we have to drive today. We have 5 of us traveling together in a total of 4 vehicles. So that gives us an extra driver if someone is tired. The traveling crew includes Jerry Roth, Kyle Mast, Donny Roth, Kendal Eigsti, and of course myself. It was crazy the other day because Isaac Hooley said his dad knew a guy that might be working with us in Arizona. Isaac said that his dad talked to a guy who was on his way to ... read more

I have already headed to Phoenix while I am writing this, but I haven’t had much motivation to blog about the cycle trip. We’re in Las Vegas already, and I figure I better wrap this up. I’m not sure if I can start another blog at the same web address as my cycle trip, so either watch for another link on here or just check this same blog for my Phoenix trip blog. The whole trip around the US and part of Canada logged about 11,300 miles in 69 days. What an incredible trip it was! The bike performed flawlessly, and I feel like I made a great choice buying it. Thanks Tom! As far as the budget goes, I ended up way under my expected budget. The funds totaled about $2600 including food, gas, and ... read more

Leaving no grass to grow under our itchy feet, (which were probably itchy more from foot fungus caused by poor on-the-road hygiene, than from any metaphysical relationship to the travel urge) Jono and I made our way to Smith Rock. On the way, we visited the very good and very pregnant friend of mine, Jane, who we had only managed to catch up with once in the whole time we were in this part of the hemisphere. I am slack. I confess. But slack things can tend to have more give and be less likely to break than tight things… where that point is leading and what, if anything, it is justifying I do not know. I have already mentioned this earlier I think, but I just could not get my head around how much my ... read more

Hi all. We left today around 9:40am and arrived at our Best Western hotel around 6pm; they have a nice restaurant, and an even nicer heated pool which we enjoyed tonight. We drove a total of around 430 miles today. Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon were beautiful today; weather was cloudless and in the 80s all day. We plan to spend some time in Boise, Idaho tomorrow and then onto Camp Gunnison Colorado by Thursday. Not sure if I will get any Internet service once we leave Idaho so I will communicate at least tomorrow. I don't have any pictures to share today; actually I am just too tired to go down to the car and get the camera! Love to all. Jim, Marsha, Clara, Sam, and Hannah.... read more

What a long day of driving! My butt hurts so bad! But it is so nice to be home again. The drive today was pretty uneventful. It was definitely some nice weather today, I heard it was in the 90’s in the valley. Sorry to disappoint you if you were looking for some spectacular finish to the trip. I knew I had a long way to drive today, and set my mind to just getting it done. I actually made it home at a decent time too, and it took me about 10 hours to get back. My parents just got home from Goshen when I pulled in, and we had dinner together and just chatted for a while. And I might be biased by saying this, but the cats are some of the best I ... read more

September 2008: Went to Portland, OR to raft the White Salmon River, see the Columbia Gorge River Area, and explore the city. We rafted the White Salmon and hiked a few trails of the Columbia Gorge area. Amazingly beautiful. The White Salmon is a small river that flows down from Mt. Adams(in Washington) and flows into the Columbia River. It was really fun but the water was about 40 degrees so it was cold! We did the half-day rafting trip in the morning and hiked around the gorge the rest of the day checking out a few waterfalls, ending at the famous Maltnomah Falls. If you're ever in the Portland area, Columbia River Gorge is a must. Take the Columbia River Highway east and there are tons of waterfalls (77 to be exact) and hikes to ... read more
