Just a short blog so these photo's have a space. After leaving San Francisco we had 3 days to get to Seattle where we were staying with Denise our friend from India. We drove out of San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge (of course) And continued up the US 101 coastal highway all the way to Portland before taking the I5 from Portland through Vancouver (Washington) to Gigs Harbour Seattle. The drive was beautiful and the coastline very reminiscent of New Zealand. The Oregon coast had conifers, gorse (in flower) and black rocky coast with brown/black sand. It could have been anywhere on the west coast of NZ. We had 2 beautiful days cruising up the Californian and Oregon coast and stayed overnight in Oregon in a place called Golden Beach, where most of the ... read more

Well, the day is here. I am sitting at the Portland International Airport with about an hour to go before the first leg of my journey. I leave at 10:05 PST and arrive at 6:45 am in Chile. Chile is 4 hours ahead of the west coast. What a long day of travel! The last week has been an hectic mix of packing, organizing, reading, and meeting up with good friends/family one last time before I leave. It's been nice to see how many people I have around me that really care about me and whom I care about. Thank you to everyone who has wished me well, bought me lunch or dinner, or just thought about me. I have appreciated all of it very much. When I get to Santiago I will head straight for ... read more

The Human Face of Islam at Eugene Zendo on March 20 The Human Face of Islam—a one hour slide program with live narration by photographer Donald Lyon will be presented at 7PM on Friday, March 20, 2009. The Zendo is located at 2190 Garfield in Eugene. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, yet most Americans are ignorant of the origins, precepts and common threads that Islam shares with Christianity and Judaism. Brownsville travel photographer, Don Lyon, shares images from over a dozen Islamic, or formerly Islamic, countries from Spain to Indonesia and Poland to Greece. It is a colorful, intensely historic, often humorous and quite beautiful journey of understanding. There is no admission charge but contributions for the Zendo’s programs are gratefully accepted. Telephone 541 302 4576 or visit www.eugenezendo.org for information about ... read more

After a warm blueberry croissant at the French Bakery with Ross, I ventured forth back onto I-5 for a short jaunt before jumping on the Silver Falls Tour Route. As I arrived at the Silver Creek State Park, I stopped at the scenic outlook to do some picture transfers and back ups to insure I could keep all my photographic memories. While I was there, some twenty minutes, only two cars went by - and I was still on the State Highway 214 at this point -- not much going on in the area I supposed. Turns out I was right; the rangers station was empty, so lacking the small change to add up to the 3 dollar entry fee I threw in 2.50 and went on my way to the parking area. The larger parking ... read more

Well, as of right now (8:11am PST) I have 18 days, 1 hour, and 48 minutes before I board my plane to (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, then to Atlanta, Georgia, USA, then to) Santiago, Metropolitana, Chile. I have a lot to accomplish before I go. I am definitely nervous. I have dreams practically every night, some good, some bad. I actually had a dream about 2 weeks ago that I was on the plane on the way to Santiago and we collided head-on with another plane! The scary thing is that just happened not too long ago above the Amazon in Brazil (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5397902.stm). But I am definitely much more excited for the experience than I am nervous or scared. I am currently sitting in the mall of the Amo DeBernardis College Center at Portland Community ... read more

I'm back at home and back to work--that is, grading and lesson planning. Here are a few photos from Ha Noi. Nothing was damaged in transit and my iPod failure seems to be related to a software incompatibility issue and I think it's fixed. Initial follow-up tasks after travel should include *Changing passwords for anything you opened on line, and arguably for your ATM card. *Checking your bank account and credit card report periodically to be sure they weren't compromised. *Putting your passport and other important cards and documents back where you normally keep them. *Not wearing your shoes into the house or garden until you've cleaned them thoroughly. *Replying to e-mails and phone messages. *Changing "vacation" messages on your e-mail and phone. *Completing any courses of medication (anti-malarial, antibiotic, vaccination series begun before travel) *Transferring ... read more

I completed the 2 year contract I had with CPA Global and they asked me to stay another year. I hadn’t seen my family during the last two years so I asked for a month of unpaid leave before starting my third year in India. Kim and I decided to visit each other’s Families and Friends during the month off. We decided to spend the first week in Portland. Kim and I met in Portland and we both lived there several years before we met and moved to India. We stayed at Le Pension in the Hawthorne district of Portland. Le Pension is the second floor of a home in the Hawthorne that includes 3 bedrooms and a bath (lepension@gmail.com). We rented the entire thing for $250 for the week. It was built in 1896. Not long after the jet lag wore off returning from our hiatus in Asia (more about that later...how I am by trying to publish my debaucherious tails that I've dubbed 'Into the Orient, I Did Not Do Any Illegal Drugs in Asia', book...with full color pictures and zero spell check to-date) I myself was off...down the Oregon Coast for a bit of "work" for the week. You know for that 'jobby thingy' that keeps the Organic veggies in stock and the fresh potable water leaking from the kitchen faucet? I will say, that for the better part of what other people would call their 'young adulthood', I swear I'm still an 'immature homeless kid', I have been fortunate enough to be on the road, travelling for my dinero for several years now. Fueled by an adolescents ... read more

A.K.A. Long Live the Bacon Maple Bar Jeremy and I headed to Portland, Oregon for the long Presidents' Day/ Valentine's Day weekend. Neither of us have spent much time in Portland, even though it's only a few hours away from Seattle, so we wanted to see a little bit of everything, and as always we mostly love to eat and drink things. We enjoyed the drive through Washington and then battled the traffic through the southwest Portland area to experience a few wineries. We stopped at August Cellars, where we tried at least 4 of their wines, as well as 4 more from another winery that was housed in the same facility. This was really our first foray into Pinot Noirs (which Oregon is known for), and we were a little slow to warm up to ... read more
