Oregon 2018. Reedsport Breakfast at 7.30 for 8.39 start after a dreadful night fighting one of those sponge filled pillows which tried to fracture my neck. I ended up sleeping on a folded towel. Unfortunately it was also quite misty until about 11am which meant we missed some great views of this rugged coastline south of Yachats. One which is called the Devils Churn as it can be quite spectacular when the waves are driven into the narrow channel and thrust up into the air. Further on is Cook’s Chasm where water erupts through a hole in the rock like a geyser. By the time we reached the recently restored Heceta Head lighthouse it was starting to clear and we managed some good photographs from the Sea Lion Centre where coffee was available but no cake, ... read more

Most people that know us are very aware that trying local food plays a large part in our enjoyment of travel, and this trip has been no exception. Over the last few days in Oregon, we've especially enjoyed all of the fresh, local seafood and although I try to do tripadvisor reviews when I have time, I thought I'd mention a few of our enjoyable restaurant experiences here. In Rockaway, Oregon we ate at the Beach Bite right on Highway 101 about half way through town on the east side of the road at the corner of N. 2nd. Ave. Actually, this family restaurant is connected with a Mexican Bar & Grill called Dos Rocas, and we ate on that side. We both had the Halibut fish tacos and they were fantastic as was the Salmon ... read more

Yesterday, Friday, September 5, was breaking heat records, into the 90's fahrenheit. And the outlook was for more of the same on Saturday. But, the day started very foggy, misty and COLD and we didn't climb up past 55 degrees; nearly 40 degrees cooler than forecast! So the Miata kept her top on all day today. Our first stop today was Cape Foulweather with a 360-degree coastal panorama view. Unfortunately, the weather really was foul; so foggy we couldn't see much but I did get a few shots of a beautiful beach, hundreds of feet below us, fading off into the fog in the distance. We drove on to the Devil's Punchbowl from here, which is a rock formation on the coast that is like a huge bowl with tunnels at the bottom letting in the ... read more

Proceeding south along the coast the scenery continues to expand the mind as does the strength of the many cyclers we pass going up the hills. There are an equal number of motorcycles here as folks enjoy the outdoor life. Our RV parks are carved out of hillsides and forests, making their internal navigation challenging but the spots occupancy enjoyable. In Florence we “ride the dunes”, enjoying part of the 50 miles of amazing centerpieces of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (yes I got the rubber stamp at the U.S. Forest Service office in Reedsport). These dunes are made of “wet” sand, fed by natural springs, which make them hard packed and easy to navigate in off road vehicles and the sand not blowing a lot. We do experience 26 mph wind at our overnight ... read more

Who would've thought that you couldn't find wi-fi on the beach in Oregon? Well, we've had a tough time. Reason: coffee kiosks. With a kiosk every block there are no coffee shops, the home of wi-fi nationwide. So we have finally found one in Reedsport, our last stop on the coast (probably--but who knows, it's early in the day). We are heading to Crater Lake either today or tomorrow. Camping the first night where it is projected to be in the 20s. That will be our coldest night yet so we'll see how it goes. The pay off is that after that we're setting up in a B&B for a couple nights to rest. So while freezing we will have that to look forward to. Saw some Gray Whales off the coast yesterday and today viewed ... read more

. It was inevitable… The fabulous weather we had been experiencing just had to come to an end… Well, today it did - we looked out the window, and it was grey as far as we could see and there was actually rain! Out plan had been that we would drive to the Oregon coast, find a good spot and then ride our bikes along the coast road… Statistics Starting Destination: Newberg, Oregon Ending Destination: Reedsport, Oregon Ending Destination GPS: N: 43° 41.698’ W: 124° 07.364’ Elev: 60’ Miles Driven: 194.5 Total Miles Driven: 7,811.3 On the way to the Coast By the time we left the hotel the weather had not improved one iota - it was still raining, and sometimes it was raining hard!!
