The four of us had a pleasant three-day trip to the Oregon coast. Unfortunately the weather was not terribly cooperative. We had expected to see sunsets and maybe whale spouts, but instead a blanket of fog obscured most of the ocean. Still, the ladies enjoyed shopping at the outlet mall and visiting the casinos. As for me, I mostly read, using the iPad to access digital books. Lincoln City is home to the world's shortest river. This is the D River and I took a picture of it in its entire length. While I was standing there, the tsunami warning siren sounded. Just as I was thinking about heading to higher ground, it stopped. I assume that it was a test, but I can tell you that I had visions of the imminent arrival of a ... read more

Our visit to the coast was brief. We started at Lincoln and drove up on the old road on the ‘Three Capes Loop’. We didn’t get to Cape Meares because there was a washout on the road, but we did see Cape Kiwanda at Pacific City and Cape Lookout. The most spectacular was Cape Lookout, as you can see from the picture I’ve included. We tested the water out, but only up to our ankles. We both understand why all the surfers are in wet suits in this area. That Pacific water is very cold. Nevertheless, we had to say that we got wet in the Pacific Ocean. If we were going to come to this region for a stay on the coast we would definitely consider the hotel at Cape Kiwanda. It is expensive, but ... read more

Pack up, load up and and get comfy because we are hitting the road for another 8 hour drive to our next stop... We all seemed a little foggy on this particular morning, must have been that darn fire alarm! (DARN?? since when do I say DARN?? American influence... very contagious!) Anyway onward and forward:) We crossed a few amazing bridges and saw interesting little towns scattered about as Uncle Dave said "you don't want to blink, 'cos you will miss it" WE were now on the West Coast, the scenery was changing and we managed to get a pics of the rocky outcrops leading into the sea, it is so amazingly gorgeous I cant't get enough of it! Soon we arrived at our beach front accomodation and it had breathtaking views over the beach, within ... read more

The end of January will find me flying into Portland, Oregon and heading to the Oregon Coast. I have moved a little further down the coast - south of my favorite Manzanita Beach - and will be heading to Gleneden, OR. I am anxious to see the coast line further south - the waves are reportedly larger. Gleneden appears to have all the essentials - A gallery, a wine shop, a deli and several gift stores and a full-service spa and some great restaurants. But most importantly it has miles of vacant beaches along the coast line! Gleneden Beach is tucked in the middle of a string of Pacific Coast state parks, each with its own unique coastal attractions and view of the ocean. It is also a popular seal watching area. Gleneden is named after ... read more

Got to Neskowin at 5:30 on Friday night with just about the whole family in tow... When we got to the rental home we found out that it was called "The Sandy Castle". We had Eggplant Parmesan for dinner, went out for a quick walk on the beach and came back to play cards. On Saturday morning the whole family was up and moving by 9! Our first trip was driving to Munson Falls... It was about a mile off the highway on a dirt road and only about .75 mile walk from the parking area to the falls. It was a nice and easy hike that just about anyone could do. Next, we drove up a few miles to the Tillamock cheese factory where, yes, we got to see Cheese being made. Of course, the ... read more

We woke up kinda late (for us) and walked to the Continental Breakfast served by the hotel. It was a good breakfast, but was mostly just bagels and English Muffins. After breakfast we immediately went down to the beach and walked a long stretch until there was a river we couldn't cross. Along the way we saw some awesome tide pools with starfish, mussels and many other sea creatures. Since we were "stuck", not being able to cross the river we walked up to the main strip and walked down back to the hotel. It was still a little too early for many shops to be open but it was cool to see what Lincoln City had. For the most part, it was just "mom and pop" places offering everything from antiques to tattoos to used ... read more

After picking Emma and Sebastian up from school we dropped them off at Ricks and hit the road to Lincoln City. Heading slightly south and eventually getting on Oregon Highway 18 we were on our way. About the mid-point we saw signs warning of a car wreck... which lead us to a detour of going 45 minutes out of our way. On the up-side we got to see another highway and we listened to a whole Modest Mouse album in it's entirety. After following many detour signs (and seeing a few other cities, like Hebo) we eventually made it to Highway 101. We drove south for about 20 miles and eventually made it to our destination of the Sea Horse Motel. We droppe... read more

9/2/09 We stopped in on my old high school friend, Dick, out of the blue last night. He lives on the Oregon coast along a well-kept-secret of a salmon stream. We did the same thing to him about a decade ago. He loved the serendipity of having us drop in on him like that again. Dick is one of the people in this world that I can pick up a conversation where it was left off years before with no problem. We talked until late in the night remembering our youthful craziness, sharing stories of the ups and downs of the past decade, and tugging at the thread that runs between the two. I must say, it is a real luxury to have someone who you need not do a whole lot of preamble with while ... read more

16th June, 2009. Newport Beach, Oregon Away early again, off down to Newport beach (by the way Kelly we had Oysters for dinner last night). The first part of the trip took us slightly inland, and then back out onto the coast, this is one scenic Highway. The road travels in and out of the coast, beautiful bays and lots of small resort towns (not busy at the moment but in a few weeks time will be booked out). The beaches look great and the weather is starting to get warmer, nice wide beaches. Into Newport and booked into Harbour Village Camp, last spot until the end of September and they have 140 sites (all RV, no tents). We are staying in a Bay, went for a walk after setting up, down into the fishing village, ... read more

A tradition has been for my mother and I to go to the beach and celebrate my birthday. This is the first time I have done so since she passed away four years ago. I went to Lincoln City where she liked to go and down to the bay at the south end of Lincoln City. There many people gathered to watch the tide ebb and flow, eat at Moe's restaurant, build fires on the shore, gather driftwood, and let their dogs roam the shoreline. But there was a couple of friendly gentlemen that I recognized from five years ago. They were still there sitting beside their bonfire, drinking their hidden beverage from a brown bag hidden inside another bag. I wandered up to them and began to talk. As I introduced myself, one of the ... read more
