We decided to leave our truck at the longterm parking at Newark Airport and take the train into Manhattan. We were only going to be in the city for 3 days so we just packed light and only brought what we really needed and could carry with us. When we arrived at Penn Station, we only had a few blocks to walk to our hotel. We stayed in a place on Lexington so it wasn't really that far to hoof it. We left almost immediately from the hotel to see the Empire State Building. We must have had some kind of luck because Thursday in the afternoon was the least busy time at this tourist site. We were able to just get up there in no time at all. It was an amazing site, the air ... read more

The drive to Montreal was too long to do in one day, so we decided to stop halfway, which appeared to be Albany. I'd never heard of this city before, but apparently it's the capital of NY state.. However, instead of spending part of the day here (there was not that much to see in this by us unknown city), we spend an afternoon (eventually more than an afternoon, an afternoon and an evening actually) in an outlet centre close to NY city. This outlet centre was huge.. Amazing! The weather was great that day, so I was happy that all this was an outside mall, opposed to most other American malls. Many things were really cheap (Tommy Hilfiger polo for about 25 Euros), but I managed to control myself and not buy too much... However, ... read more

It was still quite a drive from Washington, not close to comparable to the distances in my sweet home country, but then, late in the evening, we finally arrived in the city that never sleeps... NEW YORK! The best way to describe my experiences in NY is: everthing that's being said about NY, it's all true! It's true that driving in NY is not advisable, it's true that accomodation is expensive (our guesthouse was affordable, but the room was a disaster), it's true that life in general there isn't cheap (hooray for our NY booklet, this helped us find a nice, affordable Italian place, which of course was always packed)... .. but it's also true that this city is alive, 24/7, it's happening.. I can imagine why so many people dream of living in this city.. ... read more

On my way to sunny Cardiff there had to be a stopover so chosen was good ol' New York, New York. Such a big place, so little time, so what did I manage to cram into 10 days in the big apple?? Well this time I made a list so here goes..... Arrived to a huge hostel -room for 640 people- spent 20 minutes listening to hitler at the front desk explaining the 'house rules' like I was ten years old and heading off to summer camp!!. Decided to go to Staten Island with some girls from the hostel coz the hostel's tour was cancelled and we still wanted to go but then got stuck on the subway when a beam of some sort fell on the track!!! So it took 4 1/2 hours in total ... read more

I am getting very excited about the trip to Bangladesh now. It seems hard to belive that a couple of days from now I will be on the other side of the world. Literally. I think I am all packed, though I am sure I will find things that I didnt bring once I am there. I think I have prepared quite well, though there is much more uncertainty in traveling to Bangladesh than there is traveling to Europe, which I have done several times. Here is my itinerary: June 13rd fly to London June 14th fly to Dhaka, Bangladesh June 15th arrive in Dhaka, Bangladesh VERY early June 18th go to Cox's Bazaar (longest white sand beach in the world) June 23rd fly to Delhi, India In India we will be spending a couple of ... read more

Due to an administrative error on my behalf Ben and I were booked in on separate flights to New York. Ben’s flight departing an hour before mine meant that he would arrive at JFK in time to meet the girls. My arrival into New York was in the evening and I had the most spectacular of views as we flew around Manhattan Island to make our approach into JFK airport. The lights of the city and the tall skyscrapers were magical. During my journey I had spent my time talking to two New York City businessmen who were kind enough to write me a list of all the must sees in the city. They were even kind enough to offer a lift into Manhattan. Already I had a feeling that this city was going to be ... read more

Monkey and I went to a Broadway show today. Yes I actually took Monkey. Not too difficult to figure out... "Tarzan". Pretty good. No actual monkeys in the showut he humans did a pretty good job of imitating. Haven't talked a lot about the shows I've seen. Didn't think there was much interest. You tell me. Monkey did get a chance to see Phil Collins after the show. He was sort of speechless. Monkey, not Phil Collins. Monkey has been drawing lots of attention. I've actually been getting worried that somebody might seize upon the monkey idea and use him (or a sibling) in a crime. "Can you describe the Perp"?, "Yes Officer, he was wearing a black monkey on his back". We'd be dead meat. Having a difficult time uploading pix. I'll do the best ... read more

This has gotta be my last entry (ever?) since I'm back home now which means my adventure in China is over. To Sum Up My Experience: Only In China, I... *Spent the night in a tent at the base camp of Mount Everest. *Rode a camel through the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang. *Partook in a massive snowball fight on Heavenly Mountain. *Took in all of China from atop the massive Great Wall. *Luged down the Great Wall. *Went scuba diving at a National Coral Reserve in Hainan. *Saw the Potala Palace, and the tombs of many past Dalai Lama. *Watched monks in the middle of a heated debate in a monastery in Lhasa. *Spent hours hiking around Hangzhou only to stumble upon a real, functioning Daoist compound with mom and dad. *Avoided a dinner ceremony involving ... read more

Very busy day. Wre went to the top of The Empire State Building. Monkey said it was "way too tall" to climb. Next stop was The Staten Island Ferry. It's a nice boat trip, and it's still "absolutely free". After that we went to Yankee Stadium. Oh well, that's Monkey for you. Personally, I'm a Red Soxs fan. Got absolutely lost on the subway. More than a few people are noticing Monkey. By the way, stopped into the "Toys 'R Us" in Times Square. At least 30 DDR Monkeys are looking for a home. Any takers? Last stop was The Bronx Zoo. I was there on my last sabbatical, and it justs gets better every time. The tiger and gorilla enclosures are the best I've ever seen. While the gorillas don't really care, one of the ... read more
