Eurotrip 2ColleenLast year, my trip to Europe resulted in hastily scribbled notes on sheets of paper that have long since been torn up or lost in the general chaos of traveling. Fortunately, I was able to document the highlights of my journey with a camera. However, having a bit of experience with Europe now, I am more prepared for this adventure in bringing along a journal and realizing that internet cafes are plentiful and reasonably priced anywhere you go. Last year, my trip was more confined, as I only explored Ireland and France. However, I had the chance to immerse myself in Irish culture at every coast and I saw the extreme difference between Parisian France and the south of France, which is really more like a French-speaking Italy, filled with Mediterranean and Roman influences. BUFFALO Came up to Buffalo on Friday. Very long train journey left Boston at 8am and got to the hostel about 10.30PM. I went to the Niagara Falls yesterday which was fantastic! It wasn't too expensive to do the different bits I paid 24 dollars. For that I did the maid of the mist which is a boat trip where you go really near the falls. Also went on the cave of the wind which was the biggest thrill. They have built a walk way up the falls where you literally touch the water. I went up right to top known as the hurricane level. It was so powerful that you scream! But hence I got so soaked. Went for dinner out yesterday with an Aussie girl to the place where they 'invented' Buffalo wings - ... read more

Flew from Boston to Buffalo early on Friday morning. Arrived mid afternoon at our hostel (very nice, has been voted best in North America) and then caught a bus to Niagara falls to do the touristy bit. Arriving at Niagara it's actually pretty depressing, very much the tacky holiday resort in a run down area (think Blackpool). The river itself and the falls are spectacular though. The water is the most amazing turquoise colour and the falls are huge and very impressive. We wanted to walk up the path that takes you right up to the side of the American falls but Becky realises she has forgotten her waterproof and there is so much spray comes off the falls that it would mean getting soaked. Thankfully though the Maid of the Mist tours give out free ... read more

Stopped one night in Buffalo on our way back from Niagara falls. Quite a nice city but nothing out of the ordinary and there didn't seem too much to do for the visitor. The city is on Lake Erie so we went down to the lake, these lakes are massive they are like inland seas but most of the area around them is industrial so dont picture a massive Lake Windermere coz that is not the case. Anyway, we were down by the lake and .......... yep, you guessed it I was interviewed for a documentary on New York state libraries!! I'm not kidding either, Claire volunered me as spokesman and I mumbled answers to questions like, "What do you think of when I say the word library?" and "what do you think are the threats ... read more

She was still undergoing her multi-million dollar renovation but the Martin house is still incredible. The neighborhood was incredible as well, not far from one of Olmstead's parks, there were a number of Victorian homes providing stoic and stark contrast against the low slung lines of Wright. Highly recommend on a visit to Buffalo. The houses in the neighborhood are all beautiful but the tour guides love to draw comparisons between the success of Wright's designs and the pitfalls for the more traditional.... read more

Manny decided we should take a road trip for both of our birthdays driving up the Lake Erie shore up to Niagara Falls, Canada. This blog covers our drive up to Buffalo, NY. We stayed one night in Erie, PA and one night in Buffalo, NY. Erie wasn't much to talk about although we found a great little restaurant for a birthday dinner and Presque Isle State Park was nice at sunset. Erie seems to be a stacking of old brick warehouses and factories with asphalt and railroad tracks. The most interesting thing in Erie (I almost forgot) was the US Brig Niagara, which I sadly did not take a picture of on account of the lousy lake weather we were having and the fact that I did not have a wide angle lens for the ... read more
