This fall I have an internship in Gloucester, MA. To make the 11+hour trip more interesting, my good friend, Sara joined me on an East Coast roadtrip. The goal was Boston to visit a friend from high school. We decided to make things more interesting by stopping through Adirondack National Park in New York state. Honestly, I would recommend everyone spending some time out there. It's the largest(I think?) National Park and it's absolutely amazing. We made stops in Old Forge (thanks for the recommendation, Travel Channel), where we stocked up on local goods at the farmer's market and stopped in at the Cohen Brother's hardware store. Heading out along route 28, we happened upon many adorable, mountain towns. As evening approached we searched for a camping spot. In spite of packed campsites, we were directed ... read more

Brant Lake Camp 1989-2009. So, how do I begin trying to explain this place Brant Lake Camp to the uninitiated? Short answer is I can’t. But being told I can’t do something, never stopped me before. In fact, it usually made me more determined, so here goes. I would guess there are other camps that are equally meaningful to their own alumni, although I’m not so sure. I spent just 9 days back at my “other home” in early July and, yes, there were moments of frustration and despair, and times when I wondered if I’d get my voice back after repeating “call the ball” for the 6th straight time within a matter of minutes. However, offset these intermittent minor drawbacks with the countless ‘moments’ of joy, fun, laughter and excitement, and you’ll begin to ... read more

Leaving Traverse City, we drove through Ontario and headed east to Lake George in the Adirondacks, where Ken and Ellie re-joined us for a few days. They graciously returned 9 bottles of wine that we didn't want to carry across Ontario due to Canada's alcohol tax. Of course, we thanked them by sharing a bottle or two or three. We then headed south to spend time with Andy and Kay (who joined us in Yellowstone a few months ago) and who have a lovely country home and 50 acres outside Troy, NY. Diane backed the bus all the way up their long driveway to the barn, where a 50-amp outlet was available. The fall color was spectacular this year. We visited Saratoga, West Point, several quaint Vermont towns, local farmers’ markets, and found a wonderful art ... read more

So, what have I done? Since being home, I've been working at this house for Steve and Melissa from my mom's office (the expeditionary studies department of SUNY Plattsburgh). One of the students from the department has been working with them and helped me get this work so I wouldn't be stuffed in the back office of some company doing the most senseless work possible. I've learned how to run electrical outlets and installed lights and switches. I've done work all over the house from sanding and cleaning, to learning how to drive a tractor. I enjoy my job, and even more than that, the people I work with. In addition to that, I've met a lot of kids from the department. I went out with them one night to Peabody's which was not something I ... read more

So I've been home for a few weeks...still more pictures to post. I haven't heard back about my grade from the Belarus class yet, which is a pain. Been working a bit of construction type stuff for a woman my mom works with. Spending some time with the other kids I'm working with- actually went out with them the other night to a bar in the Burgh. Wierd for me. Really wierd. Family was up for graduation party on Cumberland Head. Wind and rain all weekend. Babcia bought a house about 3 miles from mine that weekend, too. She should be moving here in about a month...intersting. Only a few weeks till I head out to NC for a year. There is too much fighting here for me to deal with so I'm getting even more ... read more

Hi everyone, I'm just ducking into the public library to give you all a shout out from Sarnac Lake Village, NY. The bugs weren't so bad, but there was a tough little portage and up stream paddle along the Raquette River! Some very low class II rapids, mostly a walk and less of a paddle. Brett and I are doing well and actually have seen some sweet wild life. There was a very curious pine martin that decided to pay us a visit at camp last night, we saw a HUGE snapper turtle (I'm talking bite your paddle apart big) that we decided to leave alone, we got our first bald eagle and hawk viewings in along Stony Creek and finally we saw Old Man River twice (at the lean-to near Raquette Falls) he had a ... read more

Hi everyone, This is just a quick little blurp about how our trip is going so far. Brett and I have had a productive and busy couple of days. We have canoed across ten (and a half -Brett doesn't want to get short changed) lakes and two rivers/streams (the Raquette was WAY low this morning and we had to walk the canoe through most of the knee high rapids). We are currently resuppling in Long Lake before we go into the most remote section of the NFCT in NY (three days; no roads, no people, no worries). The black flies are BAD (worse then Brett or I have ever seen them -yes this includes the Penobscot watershed for you old trail folk back in Maine) and we are bitten pretty badly. We are probably a little ... read more

So graduation is the next step in this summer's travels. I know I didn't have to go anywhere for it, but still it changes who I am. I'm sick, for the 3 days between graduation and my trip to Europe. I'm really excited for this trip even though half of it is for a class. My family is excited to see me and that makes me happy. Alright, a few pictures and then I have to keep packing.... read more

On Thursday, I headed to Lake Placid to see the Division III Men’s College Hockey Frozen Four and spend time with some college friends. It isn’t my first trip up to LP, so I was looking forward to a fun and interesting weekend. Because I went to college in central NY, the cold north has always felt like home to me, and as I drove up the Northway, I could feel myself relax measurably. By the time I reached my friend’s parents' cottage on the lake, where we would be spending the next five days, I was ready for the weekend! But boy, not a lot could prepare me for our mini-Hamilton reunion! We began arriving Thursday night, as the wind and snow picked up to welcome us. I'll have to use nicknames from now on ... read more

Dear Everyone, Today's the 1st back on the blog after a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We had a wonderful time with Paul's parents and enjoyed their Albany hospitality. They took us to the Sienna vs. Stanford BB game which was a great one. Sienna pulled off an upset and left the #20 team Cardinal out on a limb...79-67; sorry all of you down on the farm. The student body went wild; you would have thought Sienna had won the NCAA Tourney. Then, we ate many of Joan's wonderful meals, had the grand tour of Albany watched football, and took off in a rental car with Charlie's ice scraper, snow brush, and maps. We had a lovely 2 hr. drive to Lake Placid, checked into The Golden Arrow Hotel on Mirror Lake and got ready to see Abby. ... read more
