As we wrap up our time at Lake Six Berry I’m filled with mixed emotions. Once again The Lake has provided me an opportunity to get into a relaxed state of mind that I’m not able to find many other places. There aren’t many other locations that I find the time to read three books and the entire New York Times on numerous days in two short weeks. (Bousselot: Check out A Thousand Splendid Suns and Atonement) But we are eager to move on to the next adventure, no not Scotland, but Fish Creek Pond in the Adirondack State Park. The motto there is everyone needs a quiet place. While beautiful, not exactly a quiet place. The fun will be had spending another day with mom, dad, my sister Jackie, my brother Chris, his wife Heather, ... read more

We are wrapping up week two at Six Berry Lake. This week has been much quieter than the first. We went on a boat tour of the St. Lawrence Seaway and toured Boldt Castle on Heart Island. The St. Lawrence Seaway is one of three rivers in the world that flow north. The others are the Nile and the Columbia Rivers. The rest of the week we spent reading, golfing, swimming, and relaxing in the sauna. Monday morning we leave for Fish Creek Pond Campground in the Adirondacks. There we will meet up with my parents for a night before heading to Burlington, Vermont. Until then…. enjoy the pictures. ... read more

We just finished our first week at Six Berry Lake. We have been having a marvelous time. We started the week by catching up with our good friend Amy and her three children. We had a nice time relaxing by the lake. Her kids had a wonderful time catching frogs, fishing, and swimming. Later in the week, Carey arrived with some friends of Kristen’s and his from their hometown of Oneonta. Cameron and Sue were a lot of fun. Cameron was born in Scotland and lived there for the first 25 years of his life. His stories describing the scenery, cities, and debauchery of soccer games had us quite excited. Although the experience that lies ahead still does not feel real. I’m not sure I’m going to believe it until I’m sitting in Joanna’s house in ... read more

Lake Placid November, 2006 The weather remained unchanged from Montreal, but that was the only similarity. Lake Placid certainly will see the return of moi next year. I felt more at home in this town of 3,000 inhabitants than in a town with millions. Go figure..or just go figure skate :) Had the opportunity to walk around Mirror Lake getting soaked and soaking in the views. Whiteface Mt was not making an appearance during my stay, but I'm sure we will meet soon. ... read more

Odometer: 34225km The day started with breakfast at Hunter's Diner. I was one of those classic American Diners and had earned "Best Diner of the Region- Peoples Choice Award." It looks a bit like the fuselage of an airplane and is covered in stainless steel inside and out. They were prefabricated in New Jersey and then shipped to their final location for assembly. Hunter's was put in place in 1953 and has been owned and operated by the family ever since. The place was very clean and everyone was efficiently attended to my two waitresses. They seemed to know most of the clientelle by their first names. My waitress was Rae. I couldn't help but comment on her name. "That is a unique name. My sister-in-law's is the same." "Oh it's unique alright, but it isn't ... read more

For those of you who are new to this blog, I have just returned from some time in Bolivia, which you can read about here, which will clarify the purpose of this entry: So, given the fact that I never laid eyes on any alpacas in their native environ, I finally gave in to Mark, who has been asking patiently for about a year to go and visit this alpaca farm which is near the cabin, in upstate New York. We have been passing them every time we have been up there for as long as I've had the cabin. We have nicknamed them all Dolly. (as in Llama...see, still none too sure they aren't Llamas). But the sign says "Alpaca Farm", so no real use arguing. Turns out they are small llamas that look like ... read more

Well, we did a three day trip to the mountains, to take advantage of 'all that snow'. Day one: went to Iceface, err.. I mean Whiteface, the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, and theoretically, some of the best skiing this side of the Mississippi. We managed to get to the top of the gondola, where it was blizzard winds, and honestly, I could have spread my arms at the top of the steepest slope there and never have started a descent on my snowboard, due to the windsheer. Insanely windy. If I held my snowboard over my head at the right angle I might have actually been able to fly...looking back, I should have tried this. So, finally started my decent with a little creative hopping/voodoo dancing my way toward something really steep ... read more
