Geo: 44.2794, -73.9803We rode our bikes to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort this morning, and took the gondola to the top of the slopes. This area is experiencing record high temperatures for this time of year, but the 85 degrees feels pretty good to us.We returned to the campground around 10:30 am and swam a little in the stream. After lunch, we took a cab into the Olympic Village at Lake Placid. We went to the 1932 and 1980 Olympic Ice Rinks. The "Miracle" Ice Rink still gets me. The guy working the desk at the museum was working concessions at the rink during the 1980 US/Russia game.We then hiked about 2 miles to the Lake Placid Lodge. Had some great drinks at the bar, and great conversation with the bar tender and other patrons.Great day. Heading ... read more

Geo: 44.2794, -73.9803We drove about 3-1/2 hours to Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain. We hung out around the campground and took a 3.5 mile hike. There is a whitewater stream behind the campground with rock cliffs lining the sides. There were many local kids diving off of the rocks into the pools of water. It is awesome. We walked to a restaurant right outside the campground, along the banks of the river. Great food and Lake Placid IPA. Tomorrow we will head into the Lake Placid Olympic Village, but from what we have seen so far, I can't image the world descending on this little town.... read more

We had a lovely day on the water yesterday. We traveled for 10 hours and covered 85 miles including transiting through three locks. We had a two knot current pushing us so that helped our speed. Not too much wait time, 40 minute at the Iroquois lock, a half hour at the Eisenhower lock but the doors were open and waiting for us at the Snell lock. It was 7:00 PM so we were happy to be breezing through. We tied up at the Pleasure Craft dock at the bottom of the lock for the night. Nice and peaceful only one ship came through in the night. I could not blog because my Canadian Service Provider does not work in the US. Our cell phone was not available either, we should be back in communication tonight. ... read more

After leaving Boston, we headed north into New Hampshire then north-west into Vermont, then west into up-state New York, close to the Canadian border. We contemplated a quick detour into Maine (the most north-easterly US state) but decided that we couldn't do it justice, so it'll have to be the destination for a future trip. We feel we've truly taken in fall (autumn) in New England in all it's shades - from green to yellow to orange to red to bright red. We've driven through the most majestic scenery in the White Mountains (NH/VT), Green Mountains (VT) and the Adirondacks (NY; pronounced 'ad-deer-ron-dax') and it's been wonderful. Not only that, but we've had a taste (literally) of Ben & Jerry's ice-cream at the main company site in VT. Shame the production line wasn't operating on the ... read more

NEW YORK CITY After spending 3 days in NY we can really say we love the place, more so than we expected we would. It is a cool and foremost crazy place where you can expect anything at any time at any place! The first day we started out with a stroll through Central Park which started close to the hostel, It was pretty much as you would see in any movie which was shot in and around NY, joggers EVERYWHERE!!! We were jumping from side to side just to avoid them :) After 2 hours walking through the park we ended up at the beginning of 7th Av. (just like Dari said we would:) although a full 75 meters of course) This is where it should all be happening, Time square, Broad way, and ... read more

You may wonder why my blog entries are sporadic and I have an honest explanation. When we are not "on the road" I take a vacation and don't write. Our normal lives are no more interesting than anyone else's anyway. Our summer was fun although felt hectic at times. Normally we don't do Habitat builds in the summer but this year we did two, one in Shelby, MI and the second in Salem, OH. We also spent lots of time with son John and his 5 children in Clarkston. We camped in Ludington with Autumn and Maddie, our 2 grandgirls and had a ball keeping up with them. Our boat was in the water and the weather was warm so we enjoyed time with friends and son Aaron, daughter-in-law Shelly and their children. We celebrated grandson ... read more

More evidence of 'Global Warming'. Todays Autumn Colours tour was temorarily disbanded because of rain and snow. Unseasonal here just as it was when we were in Tokyo in April and even in Melbourne as we speak... Believe the nonsense if you like. Anyway, it was another interesting day for us - and a lot of fun. We are now comfortably in our room at Lake Placid. A stopover at Fort Ticonderoga was fascinating albeit cut short meterologically. This is where the French took on the Brits and won temporarily in a rout apparently. We didnt see as much as we might have but it was good. We were meant to do a cruise on Lake Placid and a tour up the Olympic ski-jump tower but it was all cancelled and instead we drove around and ... read more

Ahoy! Matey's (i've had two cups of coffee today...) Ok so while i'm here and have internet connection i will say a bit more. Had a great day off yesterday and this morning in Lake Saranac Village! It's a pretty cool little town and everything we need is in walking distance! I'd like to thank the Hotel Saranac for their hospitality and letting us store our canoe there! The Pequod had such a nice rest! We'd also like to thank St. Regis Outfitters for the yoke pads and all their help in getting us reset for our next part of our adventure! They were so helpful!! Also it was nice to meet Anne from Raquette River Outfitters wish we could have stopped by her store and supported!! (if you're ever in New York and need some ... read more

Keith and I left Montreal on the 9:30am Amtrak train headed to Westport, NY. When we stepped outside it was icy and completed covered with snow. Even the taxi driver complained about it being so cold. Of course my camera battery went dead when we headed out and I couldn't find my charger. We took a few pics with my phone but they don't show the beautiful scenery that we saw on the train. The view was just unbelievable (Lake Champlaine frozen over with ice fisherman here and there, beautiful snow covered rivers and trees). We arrived to the train depot in Westport, NY around 2pm. This depot had Norman Rockwell written all over it. When we arrived we soon realized we did not have a ticket to get to Lake Placid. So, we paid Bob ... read more

We’re currently in Quebec, but I'm behind on the photos from Ottawa and now Quebeck, -- but Here are some more photos I took at the Adirondack Museum. I didn’t have time up upload them all with the last blog. By the way, sorry about the double mailing of my last blog notice. I’m still learning how to work with the blog site and can do some of the actions only when I’m online - when I’m usually rushed. Did you note that you can “unsubscribe”? So if you don’t want to get these blogs, that’s all you need to do. I’ll probably never find out . . . ... read more
