This morning, we drove from Gallup to El Morro National Monument. We were told that bull snakes may be sunning themselves on the path, which is never a good thing to tell Jeff (because he's very much not fond of snakes) or Liam (who thinks it'd be really cool to see a snake). We didn't end up seeing any, which was fine with me. We did have a nice time walking around the Inscription Loop Trail. At one point, I told the boys to watch out for the number 11 and Cole was the first to recognize it. Where'd that come from? My favorite two inscriptions were E Pen Long and R H Orton, which I think are both pictured here. Cole was very glad to have seen bugs--one that looked like similar to ones at ... read more

I parted from my two friends on February 15th. Anahi returned to Venezuela and I proceeded on to New Mexico. Since the 1970’s when I discovered the artist Georgia O’Keefe, I have cherished a desire to see New Mexico. My interest in Native American culture since I was little has fuelled this desire, as many Indian pueblos still exist and function, albeit in quite a different form from the ancient ways. Thus, was I drawn to the stunning landscape and rich and deep culture of New Mexico, and being relatively nearby in Mexico, I thought I would take advantage of the opportunity to visit for a while. In all I spent about 10 days in New Mexico, arriving first in Albuquerque where the international airport is. I had forgotten just what a car culture North America ... read more

It was a family trip to watch my nephew play in a regional baseball tournament. We drove from Denver and made a stop in Santa Fe for a delicious lunch in the old town center at the Anasazi Restaurant at the Anasazi Inn. I had a delious sesame crusted salmon entree served perfectly rare. The rest of the family ordered other items such as the Buffalo Burger, Beef Fajitas, Ahi Tuna Tostada and the chicken enchilada. All of the entrees scored an A+ for presentation and food quality. The service was also great. While lunch was a bit on the pricey side ($10 to $15 per entree), we felt it was good value for the money. We walked off lunch around the old town center and made a bee line for Ecco gelato. Some of the ... read more

April took us to the Rio Chama in northern New Mexico for the next group's third week. It was an odd weather week in that we were rafting and canoeing in pretty cool water. The temperature would alternate between freezing and 60 from day to day. We woke up twice to snow and went to sleep while it was snowing once, but it the snow would melt and the sun would be out by the time we were ready to get on the river. It was a beautiful landscape that reminded much of the Sedona area, there was tons of gorgeous red rock, but the red rock was also interlaced with white and yellow rock too. We had a raft and a canoe. I was in the canoe for the majority of the trip. The first ... read more

Las Vegas rests beneath the gentle shadow of the Sangre de Christo mountains, a small, vibrant city on the edge of rolling green-gold prairie, a city whose land speaks of fire-roasted chile and reflected sun. The scent of juniper and piñon welcomes you to a tree-lined city that ranchers, artists, and families who have lived here for hundreds of years call home. Beautiful music - from the plucked strings of a Mariachi's guitarrón to the elegant classical voices of the New Mexico Highlands University choir - often echos from the Plaza Park's gazebo as local dancers salsa and two-step during cool summer evenings. A stroll through the Arts and Cultural District reveals an array of aesthetic riches - from carved wooden saints and softly painted retablos, to bold modern offerings from new, up-and-coming artists. Authentic and ... read more

While I was home in Phoenix in November/December I thought I'd be staying there until April or so, but Seaver called me to come back to work in New Mexico. There was opportunity for advancement in this small company and I would be the most experienced instructor. The schedule would be different now…instead of 16 days on and 12 days off we were going to 8 days on and 6 days off so there would be more continuity in instructors. On top of that there were only going to be 4 instructors, and the partner you got was the one you kept. At first I was pretty skeptical about the schedule, but after doing it for almost 4 months now…I think it's better for the kids and the program. With only 6 days off my travel ... read more

Last night we stayed in a little campground on old Route 66. The wind died early in the evening and didn't pick up again until this morning. We fought strong headwinds all day, cutting our gas mileage by 25%. We drove through the high plains of the Texas panhandle with the winds roaring. We stopped outside Amarillo at the Cadillac Ranch so Gena and I could take pictures. The winds nearly blew us away, but we got our pics and Gena even added a bit of graffiti of her own. Every time we stopped we had to fight the winds, getting in and out of the cars, and walking across the parking lots. The view from the rest area west of Shamrock, TX was terrific, but the winds were pretty potent, cold, too. It blew all ... read more

This town and surrounding area is a real gem. First of all, you are surrounded by mountains which you see in any direction you look. The RV park was one of the nicest I have ever seen (Sunny Acres). From the RV park you can go anyway you want and see lots of things. We traveled north to a National Park, Dripping Springs. Unfortunately it turned out to be a hiking trip and seeing as how I cannot hike, it was somewhat of a disappointment. We decided that seeing as how we couldn't do much here, we headed down some small dirt roads to US 70 and headed north. We visited Holloman AFB. This is a real gem of a military installation. Not big, but beautiful in architecture. We turned around (after having lunch on base) ... read more

As we drove from Dallas to Amarillo along Route 66, everything was exactly as I imagined it would be. The road was long, straight and quiet, passing by cattle ranches, oil derricks and dusty green crop fields. The 'middle-of-nowhere', 'nothing-ever-happens-here' towns we drove through were very Deliverance-esque; there may have been no porch sitting banjo players, but that was simply because there was literally nobody around. At one point, to my great excitement, our car even got hit by tumbleweed; we are definitely in cowboy country! And, as is tradition on an American roadtrip, we got to see one example of a roadside "world's largest" - a huge white cross in the middle of a field. The sign promised spiritual enlightenment, which is exactly why we took our photographs from the car and kept on driving. ... read more
