And so the journey begins as we drive off into the sunset - yes, I know that scene generally ends Westerns, but it was kind of necessary, as we are starting off going west. The first stop on our trip is Albuquerque, where I had spent a month in the summer of 1999 working at UNM for my Aunt and Uncle helping out with their vegetation and biomass mapping of the area. Bethany and I are both glad to be starting the trip this way, though, as she had not been to New Mexico in quite a few years and I had little chance to see the more touristy things like Santa Fe 9 years ago. It was also a great chance to drop in and see the Nevilles and Bennets, particularly as we were coming ... read more

Obfuscator writes: The day began with a fairly late departure from Socorro. We had grand ambitions though, which were not to be thwarted. 50 miles west of Socorro is the Very Large Array, an array of 27 huge radio telescopes that act together to make an even more powerful radio telescope. Lots of Sci-Fi movies have filmed at the VLA, so it's quite recognizable. What's not immediately apparent is how big the thing really is. Each dish in the VLA has an 82 foot diameter, and weighs 230 tons. Shockingly, they're built to be mobile. The array has variable design along the railroad tracks they've built. It's always in a Y-shape, but the diameter can be as little as just over a mile, or as great as about 25 miles. The spacing of the dishes apparently ... read more
So many dishes in a nice row.
I think you get a pretty good idea of the size of this dish when you look at the heavy equipment next to it.
It's like having a whole bunch of eyes watching you!

Erda Gardens. Hehe.. M.... read more

On Saturday I had the journey from hell from Oklahoma City to Albuquerque in New Mexico. Steeled for what I knew would be an 11 hour drive, I arrived at the bus station at 4 am to get the 6 am bus. Except it had already sold out. Leaving me 11 hours until the next bus. The time actually passed fairly quickly (time flies when you're watching the crazy people at Greyhound stations), but I only just managed to get on the 3pm bus - I was the last to board before it was full, and I felt a pang of guilt when the lady behind me started crying because she couldn't get on it. NB Buying a ticket on the Greyhound is like buying a tube ticket - you're not guaranteed to get on the ... read more

Departure Day Finally Arrives! Albuquerque: After a late night and busy morning doing last minute preparations and packing, we finally left for a 2:00 PM flight from ABQ Sunport on Northwest Airlines. Minneapolis/St Paul: Had a 4 hour layover at Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport. Passed the time getting something to eat, looking in shops, and walking the length of most of the terminals! Then we caught our 9:30 PM flight to Amsterdam on Northwest/KLM. ... read more

We came to Albuquerque to visit my Daughter Cassie & Granddaughter Seaonna. Cassie told me that if someone would get her up in the morning we could take the shuttle bus out to the balloon fiesta park for the final launch of the fiesta. I got everone up on Sunday morning & we made it to the last shuttle bus of the day! We arrived just as the first balloons were being launched. The Albuquerque Balloon fiesta is awesome. Most likely the largest event of its kind in the world. Albuquerque is an ideal location for this event due to "the box", which is a wind pattern created on the western side of the Sandia Mountains. We had a great Visit with Cassie and Seaonna and a great time at the Balloon Fiesta. Afterwards we went ... read more
