After spending several nights on Greyhound buses, I finally could sleep properly on the bed on Christmas Eve... On Christmas, I woke up at around 8am. When I woke up, I felt sore and tired. I also felt a bit dizzy and I seemed to have a headache. Suspecting a fever, I took my thermometer and measured my temperature. It was more than 39°C! Nevertheless, I quickly had my breakfast and took some medication, before tidying up the kitchen. (This hostel charged a low accomodation fee, but in return, it requires guests to do simple household chores.) I checked out from the hostel at 10am, but since my bus would only leave in the afternoon, I decided to leave my luggage in the hostel and went to explore Albuquerque. I walked to the Old Town, where ... read more

Bad start to the morning so far — I did get a good night's sleep (having gone to bed around 9p.m. and having awoke to my alarm at 3:30a.m.) but found I hadn't transferred my wash to the dryer! I'm now "patiently" waiting for my travel clothes to get dry enough to wear before I take a shower. I had planned to take out the trash and run up to check the mail and withdraw some cash from the ATM before ordering a taxi but that's all been delayed at least an hour. At least I still have plenty of time before I need to be at the airport... While waiting, I decided to do some last-minute checking of e-mail and reading of weather forecasts, etc. on the computer. But my main computer decided to be ... read more

After a record THREE days at home this time, I am preparing to leave once again early tomorrow morning. My plane to Portland, via Las Vegas, departs at 06:55. I finished re-packing earlier this afternoon (I have it down to a "science" now) and ran a few last-minute errands. All that remains to be done tonight is a quick mini-load of laundry (for the clothes I'll be wearing on the plane). I plan to relax while watching TV and to try and get a good night's sleep for a change. I still haven't decided whether I'll park my car at one of the airport lots or if I'll call a taxi. The past few days since I returned from New Jersey have been mildly hectic. After unpacking and doing laundry (I love just dumping the packing ... read more

The past two days have seen a flurry of last-minute-before-the-trip activitiy. I've actually been packed for a week (although I did make a few changes this morning) -- the three photos accompanying this entry illustrate how I'm trying to pack more lightly from now on. Other than cramming all of my "necessities" in one carry-on-approved combination rolling dufflebag/backpack plus a messenger bag-style camera/electronic gear satchel, the most important pre-trip task was the traditional vacation haircut. My hair grows very quickly (and begins to curl terribly the longer it gets); I also hate going to the barber so a trip is usually the catalyst for me doing this dreaded chore. I did this deed yesterday (a warm, why-am-I-the-only-one-wearing-a-jacket, kind of day) and ended up getting my hair cut shorter than ever before -- I'd asked the barber ... read more

I've created a couple of maps for my upcoming London trip. The first shows the route of flights from Albuquerque to London. It looks like I'll be traveling 10,434 air miles on this journey (not to mention getting to and from airports, hotels, etc.). The second map shows how far south of London that Gatwick Airport really is. The best way into the city seems to be the Gatwick Express up to Victoria Station. Express Class costs £13.00 ($22.32) one-way or £24.00 ($41.21) return; First Class runs £20-£38 ($34.35-65.26). Since it's not part of the London Transport system, my all-region pass doesn't cover the trip from the airport (but I can use it to my heart's content once I get within the Home Counties). There are also a number of airport shuttle companies, but the one ... read more

Any trip I take seems to entail way too many preparations in the weeks before departure and my upcoming December journeys are proving to be no exception. The easy part is actually finished once I've decided where I'm going and have booked the plane and hotel reservations. Those steps, for me, actually take about a week of research -- where do I want to go? what's the least expensive way to get there? what's the least expensive, but still comfortable, place to sleep there? Once all the transportation and accomodation arrangements have been made, the "real" work begins. The first matter involves luggage. It seems like whenever I return from any trip, I decide my bags aren't good enough for the next one. I've essentially been searching for the "perfect" piece of luggage for the past ... read more

First entry here, from my "home base" in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Hot Air Ballooning Capitol of the Southwest (if not the world, but I'm a bit biased). It's a bit after 4:00 in the morning with a temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit. Should be a beautiful day with the high reaching the mid-60's. In another hour or so, the sun will peak over the crest of the Sandia Mountains to the east. Sandia means "watermelon" in the local Tewa tribal language and the mountains really do look like a wedge of watermelon when the sun hits them just right. A bit about myself as a way of introduction: I love to travel. Of course I do, or I wouldn't be here. I caught the "armchair traveler" bug very early. Growing up, my family took many vacations ... read more

My father was waiting for me to get home on Thursday afternoon after another wild day as Mr. Steer the Substitute. He claimed he had a surprise for me over the weekend, and what do you know, he did not disappoint. We got in the car Friday morning at around 6AM and drove. I mean DROVE! For 16 straight hours; 2 movies, 3 hours of Rush Limbaugh, the Dan Patrick show on ESPN Radio, and about 75 old school rocks songs...11PM that night, we pulled into the middle of nowhere in New Mexico and called it a night. The next morning was amazing. We got up at 7AM and drove straight to the fly fishing hotel where our guide Mark was waiting for us. We sped over to the put in of the San Juan River, ... read more

Wow. I am back in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I arrived back in the states one week ago today. And I got back to Albuquerque last Sunday. I'm still kind of in shock to be back. People had mentioned this to me... That there might be some culture shock upon returning--I didn't really think about it or believe that it would occur. But it is. So, I realized that I never fully explained what I was doing in Copan, Honduras. I guess it is a little late now, but I will try to explain. I am a student at UNM pursuing a BA in Anthropology and a minor in Latin American studies. Last year, I took a few art history classes on Pre-Columbian Art. My professor mentioned that she was looking for students to take to Copan ... read more

I have been running around like a mad woman today. This morning I had my final for South American Archaeology. It went ok. I mean, after an hour and a half of writing, you get to the point where you don't care anymore. At 11:30 am, I no longer cared and turned that bitch in! Yeah! Had lunch with Bob today. It was our second goodbye eating event. I love Vietnamese food. Really, I love food in general. Bob leaves for London in less than two weeks! To get ready for our cross-country drive, Ben changed the oil in his pickup tonight. Yeah... The oil drain plug was stripped. He spent quite a bit of time looking for a new one. He finally found one, and finished up. Now we are trying to wash the oil ... read more
