The great plains of Kansas turn into Colorado and time slips back an hour to 'Mountain time'. It's all low scrub, tough grass and bush. A tawny collection of browns, yellows and reds as far as the eye can see rolling gently up and down. An occasional icy watery hole breaks the monotony with a few water fowl. A river, all but frozen over runs away under us and crooked off into the distance. A tree, a group of trees and a broken down shack passes as we click, clack and rumble along side a dirt road. Telegraph poles count the meter or our tempo which is steady and slow in the misty light of morning. There is the odd far house and small town with wooden houses low to the ground. Working trucks and old ... read more

That's what it looks like out here. Serene, peaceful, beautiful, and full of culture. Farmington, New Mexico - something about it was interesting and way too many Navajo-ians were abundant. I think that walking into the Wal-Mart, Ash and I were the minorities. What are Asians and African-Americans out there?? Yes, we were only in Wal-Mart for water and powerade. Farmington proved to have great Mexican food and cool Aztec Ruins. Onto the Canyon! We went first through Monument Valley, which is where all the cool scenes in Star Wars (the first one remade) was filmed, or based off of so I thought. Fairly interesting, and we ventured onto sacred Navajo land where my total non-rednecky Honda Civic went offroading. When the guide tells you to be careful about snakes/spiders/scorpions and your compact car isn't taking ... read more

Day 11 - Tuesday, November 18th - Santa Rosa, NM to Albuquerque, NM We catch a few sites additional sites of Santa Rosa as we leave town. We bypass going into the Route 66 Auto Museum so as not to get behind so early in the day. Too late we realize we probably should have wandered in given its unique offering of sixty restored classic cars and trucks on display. We head right to the expressway to begin a busy day. We’ve decided to take the Santa Fe Loop which is an earlier version of Route 66. In addition, we decide to take a side trip to Las Vegas, NM - didn’t even know there was a Las Vegas aside from Las Vegas, Nevada. From Santa Rosa, NM, we turn off I-40 after just a few ... read more

So, doing a show at 9,000 feet above sea level was quite interesting. You could totally see it on the kids during the show- that they were out of breath. We even heard it a few times. They did a great job, even with one kid (Fiona) out because she was sick. Load out went pretty smoothly; I got a pretty generous compliment from the house LD about one of my favorite cues in the show- he commented when it happened and then again after load out. Maybe I do know something about this design stuff! I really enjoyed Colorado- it was beautiful! And it was a small town, everything within walking distance. All of the shops that were open (many were closed for the off season) had the owners’ dogs in them- my kind of ... read more

I have always wanted to go to Albuquerque in October to check out the hot air balloon fiesta. One of the must-see for the enthusiasts. The Albuquerque balloon fiesta is the biggest in the world, an anual nine-day event in every October, and has around 600 balloons from the USA and the world registered this year. It is considered one of the most photographed event in the world. In the morning and in weekend, hundred of hot air, colorful balloons were launching from the park and afloat to the sky, it is an amazing sight to be seen. I booked my flight 3 months earlier to take advantage of one of the lowest available. I flew Continental airline to Albuquerque via Houston. Arrived in Albuquerque in the afternoon and called the hotel to send a complimentary ... read more

We just finished a quick trip to Albuquerque to check up on our grandson Diego. Had some trouble in Wyoming where our Saab died, more accurately, the Saab's battery gave up the ghost. Rumors via his mother that D is talking up a storm are mostly true. We had a fun time on the New Mexico RailRunner from downtown ABQ to downtown Bernalillo and back. Maybe this is the wave of the future. State and city governments building the necessary transportation from city to city. In this case it is Albuquerque to Santa Fe, which is supposed to be up and running by December 2008. They actually run down to Belen and out to Bernalillo in the north right now. See above map. I don't know what the morning and afternoon ridership is but the mid-day ... read more

Dear friends and family, Today, I am packing for my caving expedition to Chile. The purpose of this trip is to map caves, for a NASA project, in the Atacama region of Chile. We are going to the Atacama because it is very similar to Mars. The Atacama is the driest place on earth and has little to no vegitation. The project goal is locate caves on Mars, using thermal detection devices, so we are using the Atacama as an analogy site. If we can detect caves in the Atacama we should be able to find them on Mars. In doing research for this expedition I used Google Earth to look at the terrain and get a feel for the place. I also found this web site (http://www.sanpedroatacama.com/ingles/) that has some nice background info on the ... read more
