This mission is beginning to feel a little aimless. We've had to make a few adjustments to the itinerary and its wearing on everyones nerves. Tight deadlines shift to a loose but busy dictatorship of sorts. The bitter tone is likely due to the sleep deprivation. Awaiting the captains arrival last night and the suspense of lack of certainty caused heartache and ended in heartfilled drinks and talks. Which shifted to fishing, of course. Epic fishing, fish after fish, pass the rod get a little piece of glory. My second and third prises both gave me my just desserts with a bitter bite to the thumb as i set them back into the watter. Hiarcies have there purpose, especially on boats but i guess i thought this would be different, this would be a weakened hierarchy ... read more

This week Karen, Maureen, Diane and I visited Aspet the Saint-Gaudens studio in Cornish, New Hampshire. This is the only National Park in New Hampshire and the first National Park that was dedicated to an American Artist. This was such an inspiring place to visit. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was one of the premier artists of the 18th century. He first came to Cornish for the summer in 1885 renting an abandoned inn from his friend Charles Beaman and used a converted hay barn as his studio. He grew to love the place and purchased it in 1892 using it as his summer home until 1900 when he was diagnosed with cancer. He spent his final seven years living and working at Aspet. During this time the area became a summer gathering place for artists and writers known ... read more

A large winter storm has just hit the coastal area of New England. The plow drivers are working double overtime and the regional school system has shut its doors. When most people are thinking of ski country and hot chocolate the local surf population resounds with excitement for the inevitable swell. The winds of a typical Nor’easter provide the New England coast with large swells. After the storm passes, the skies are usually clear with an offshore (West or Northwest) wind. These conditions are perfect for surfing. It is not uncommon to surf in water that is just above freezing (+/- 38 degrees). The air temperature might be as low as 20 degrees, but a 6-millimeter wetsuit can keep you warm for at least an hour. Although they haven’t become a trend amongst New England surfers, ... read more

…we will rejoice and be glad in it. These words echoed out of the mouths of the children I have come to love so much over the past few months. I watched the movie Homeward Bound last night- one of my favorite movies growing up. But then it sort of made me really miss home. You see, the two dogs in the movie are Shadow and Chance (also the name of my collies growing up) and the youngest boy is Jamie. At the beginning of the movie, the family is relocating from home to San Francisco for a few months and have to leave the animals at a friend’s ranch for that time. As they drive away, Shadow, the golden retriever is saying, “Wait. Where are you going? Why are you leaving us?” And I couldn’t ... read more

On a clear very cold February day Tommy, Jim, Scott and myself went up Mt. Washington auto road in one of the Great Glen Snow Cats. The “Cats” are these great specially equipped four track vans for driving in snow. We rode on the snow pack up above the tree line on the auto road that in summer goes to the summit of Mt. Washington. At times we were driving up the road on over 8 feet of packed snow. Unfortunately we were unable to get any clear views of the top of the mountain on our ride up because of a series snow squalls. We weren't able to drive to the summit of the mountain but did get above the tree line just above 4000 feet in elevation. Rich our driver was a real bonus, ... read more

New pics: http://brookeroebuck.shutterfly.com/ Hey, Everyone! I hope this update finds you well. I hope everyone had a happy holiday and are enjoying the New Year! Things are well with me. I've been home since the 20th of December and it's been wonderful. I've spent my time recuperating from this crazy last semester and hanging out with my family. I've also been preparing for another big move - I'm moving to Freeport, Grand Bahama in just a few days now! My school has decided to open a new campus there and my class will be the first to enjoy getting all the kinks out! I'm looking forward to the move, although I'll miss home, as well as Dominica. Yes, I said it, I will miss Dominica. Not only will I miss my friends, but I'll also miss ... read more

My last journal entry was written in FCO waiting to go home. We got off the ship at an ungodly early hour, maybe 6:30 or so, when it was still dark. I had never made contact with the people we were sharing a ride with, but I knew her name and just looked for the driver that was looking for her. We got to the airport in plenty of time and we said our goodbyes to JoAnne, since she was going on a different airline she got off at a different terminal than us. The lines to check in, then go through security and passport control were very long, so I was glad we were early. For some reason they had lots of kiosks but few people manning them so we had to wait. Once through ... read more

What is an adventure? We sometimes convince ourselves that we must travel thousands of miles over foreign airspace illegally stowed on a cargo plane filled with illicit narcotics destined for a nation run by a brutal dictatorship that doesn’t hesitate to execute offending foreigners. Our only escape is to parachute, where we find ourselves floating amongst the shark infested waters of the South Pacific. As dehydration induced hallucinations kick in, we wash up on shore only to find an island of provocative women (or men depending on your preference) who have their way with our innocence. We eventually make it home to review our embellishments with everyone willing to listen. I have always wondered why travel is so important, when our activities right here at home can easily top any drunken stumble up to the zenith ... read more
