Well here is another blog update for your enjoyment. I’ve done what is called a quiet publish of the blog so if you’ve not read anything since I published Day 24 a while back, then go and have a read and keep posting your comments as you read them if you find anything interesting or have any questions as they are always great to read and sometimes funny too ! So as of today you can keep reading through until Blog Day # 30. Big sleep after a big day and we did not get up until after 8 and had a quick breakfast of bran cereal, strawberry yoghurt and some cream cheese on toast and we hit the road around 9am. Today it is cold around 4 degrees and cloudy with maximum expected of around ... read more

We were up nice and early (or should I just say early as the temperature is only 2 degrees outside !). I have put on 5 layers of clothing today for the trip to the Sunday River Golf Club. It was about 30 minutes drive away from the hotel and hit off time was booked for 8.30 am so we left around 7.15 am after breakfast so I would have time to collect my rental clubs, and get a warm up and be ready to play. Kerry was waiting in the pro shop whilst I was warming up keeping warm and looking for any nice souvenir mementos. They gave me a set of fairly new Callaway clubs and off to the range I went and I was quite surprised how well I was hitting the woods ... read more

Thursday 29th: The motel we were staying at, had a basement kitchen and dining room so Ian resurrected his chef’s skills and cooked up a storm (bacon & eggs) for breakfast. Keith arrived sartorially elegant as always (see photo) and we had a hearty feed to start the day. Then the adventure continued. The plan for today was to ride South over the next two days, heading for Albany in New York state where we are going to store our bikes at Ronnies Motorcycles. Within a few miles Keith's bike indicated it wasn't going to play ball, missing and the electrics playing up. At this stage it kept running albeit roughly, however within 25 miles it stopped all together. We had a high-level tech meeting on the side of the road. Deciding that it probably wasn't ... read more

Sunday 25th: Our Motel in Londonderry was built in 1790 (the original part). History non existent in NZ. This motel is famed far & wide for their breakfasts. We could see why. In the cost of the room they supply a full a la carte breakfast. I had grits, warm maple syrup with strawberries followed by an omelette & toast. By the time I had finished I felt like returning to my room for a nap! However we hit the road bit later than normal a definitely a bit fuller. Our bikes required oil top ups so we bought some at the first gas station we could find with motorcycle specific oil. Finding this was no easy task On a Sunday. At the gas station where we found some, we met four Upstate New Yorkers doing ... read more

Maine was really getting cold and wet, I needed a change of scenery. I decided to go back to New Hampshire to visit the White Mountain National Forest. Such a good decision. This was a location on my itinerary two weeks ago, but bee lined myself swiftly to Maine despite my premade plans. I have no excuse other than the thrill I get from making last minute decisions. NH was quiet beautiful in this area. The rolling hills of trees that are transforming into their iconic autumn colors covered the grounds as far as the eye could see. Out of the dozens of scenic view points and hiking trails, I first choose the amazing Lower Falls in Albany, by the Kancamapus Highway. Rushing waters of the Swift River, turned slight brown from picking up summer debris ... read more

I set off early the next morning, wanting to have the other BDR riders behind me in case I fell. Found the village breakfast cafe ( the one the locals frequent is always the best ) and left well fed and warm. The route wandered West past a big lake and across into New Hampshire before the final Northward push to the Border. The gravel road was lined by low trees now taking on rich fall color. I was confronted with a trench cut across the road, which I deftly drove into and then couldn't exit... eventually got myself out again. The road got worse, with the final test at Rhubarb Pond where it bumped through some mud and then closed to a three foot track. It emerged into a clearing with a cross in the ... read more

Tuttle's restaurant is prominent on the Wells River main street. I found it at 7:30 the next morning, open and ready for breakfast, the best meal of the day. It took me twenty minutes to cover the mile from the hotel, however, due to the the need to stop and take pictures. The Connecticut, which separates Woodsville from Wells River (and NH from VT) was covered with low, fast disappearing mist, creating perfect conditions for those well loved autumn photos with trees obscured by fog. Getting out of Woodsville was also slow. They have a long narrow covered bridge over a waterfall, very attractive, that led to a General Store claiming to the be oldest in the country. Fodder for the camera. The route then does a big loop through the South of the state, turning ... read more

Having survived on fear and adrenaline for the first three days of the ride, this morning provided welcome relief -- breakfast at the local coffee shop. It was the place favored by the locals -- men my age gathered around a big table in no hurry to finish. Lady my age doing everything with complete efficiency and kind concern for her customers. I was sure I would earn it - so I ate well and had a wonderful long talk with Beth. Then out of the lovely tourist village and up into the hills again to face whatever the route designers had in store. Winding west then east across the state, the route picked its way through beautiful mountain scenery. I was now accustomed to taking the Alt-easy routes around the most difficult sections and felt ... read more

Well folks. here it is September, which means another trip and another blog. As most of you already know we were booked for a British Isles cruise this year, but due to the Covid virus it was cancelled. So, on to plan "B". Since we all enjoyed our previous RV trips, we decided to do another one this time through Oregon and Washington state, a part of the country we have not visited before. We will be flying into Portland, OR where we will be picking up our 30' RV's. Ray suggested we buy some black hoodies and head downtown, but decided that would not be a good idea as Oregon does not have reciprocity with New Hampshire for concealed carry {ha, ha!}. We plan on heading North into Washington and visiting Mt. St Helen's, Mt ... read more
