Maine was really getting cold and wet, I needed a change of scenery. I decided to go back to New Hampshire to visit the White Mountain National Forest. Such a good decision. This was a location on my itinerary two weeks ago, but bee lined myself swiftly to Maine despite my premade plans. I have no excuse other than the thrill I get from making last minute decisions. NH was quiet beautiful in this area. The rolling hills of trees that are transforming into their iconic autumn colors covered the grounds as far as the eye could see. Out of the dozens of scenic view points and hiking trails, I first choose the amazing Lower Falls in Albany, by the Kancamapus Highway. Rushing waters of the Swift River, turned slight brown from picking up summer debris ... read more

Today we were leaving Stowe and I was quite sad to be leaving as I had really enjoyed the area and could quite happily have stayed for a bit longer. The next stop on the tour was the Kancamagus Highway which was 2 hour drive from our hotel; it was a route I had read about before coming which was supposed to be one of the most scenic drives on the east side of the US. Grant and I set our go-pros to record the whole drive which was spectacular and offered some excellent views of the surrounding areas along the way. Sadly the colours had started to fade from the trees and it was clear that we had missed the best autumn colours by a few weeks at least. On checking the map I could ... read more

Geo: 44.0012, -71.6276Here we go again, sun's still shining and we're off to do nothing but walk.Decided to hike to Arethusa Falls. Heard the walk is worth it.Oops, passed Diana's Bath and decide to do the walk and check it out. Side tracked again. It was lovely an we just kept walking, you could follow it way past the 'bath'. Still not a lot of water, but just beautiful. Eventually get back on track.Taken to sitting in the boot of the car to devour our snacks. Not sure why when we stop in such picturesque places. Anyway, after some confusion about the hike, we're off.Long walk and its all uphill. Does it ever end? And its beautiful!!Heading back to town and everyone's starving. Called into the tiniest deli and yep, more pizza for lunch. Found some ... read more

Geo: 44.0012, -71.6276Headed off to Loon Mountain to give the girls some fun. Sun's still shining. On on the way we stopped off and saw our first covered bridge 'Albany' (one of the 58 they have). We also walked the Lower Falls and the Basin. There's not a lot of water around as apparently they've been in a drought.Got to Loon Mountain which looked deserted only to find out that they had closed for the season other than the cable car to the top of the mountain. Girls disappointed as we're looking forward to the adventure activities, zip lining, rock climbing etc. So headed off into Lincoln and the girls went to Alpine Adventures, the roping place. We only did the ropes course that was in town, but perhaps we should have done the full zip line, ... read more

Today it was Arethusa Falls, the tallest falls in New Hampshire at over 200 feet. By the numbers, this on is as steep as some of the steeper hikes I've done this past week, but it didn't feel as steep. On my way up I took the Bemis Brook trail, which allowed me to get pictures of a couple other nice falls. Arethusa Falls itself is a wide sheet falling down a not quite vertical rock face. Heading west from there, I decided to track down and check out Circus Smirkus. Circus Smirkus is a youth summer camp for kids who want to do circu... read more

I started out first thing going to the Mt. Washington auto road, but they turned me away because the winds at the top were 93 mph. Instead, I headed to Wildcat Mountain ski area, not to go skiing but because the hike to Thompson Falls starts there. It is not a very long hike to the falls, and I was able to get good pictures of the first two cascades. Both the guidebook (Thanks Kris!) and the sheet I got from the ranger's station suggest that I should have been able to follow the trail higher, but I never foun... read more

Singing of "Rain Rain Go Away" failed to have the desired effect, so my first day in the White Mountains was rained out. I did a little bit of planning for the rest of my time in the White Mountains, a little bit of just driving around the forest, and a lot of sitting in traffic where there were huge backups going through the nearby small towns.... read more

Travel, like life, rarely goes exactly as planned. On this trip, I got something quite different than expected, initially worse but ultimately far better. This weekend, I planned to hike the White Mountains in October foliage for the first time in several years. The hiking time to a vista and back nearly matches the amount of daylight available this time of year, so I need to camp out the night before. Lots of other people have the same idea, so spots must be reserved months in advance. That means taking a risk with the notorious White Mountain weather;the range sits where three weather systems collide and has some of the worst weather in the world. On the drive up, it appeared I had rolled snake eyes. Rain was falling in sheets, from a wave of thunderstorms ... read more

The Kancamagus (the Kan is pronounced like kangaroo and the rest is pronounced ka-may-gus) Highway is reputed to be one of the most majestic byways in America. This obscenely popular area of New Hampshire is surrounded by over-hyped pay to play tourist attractions such as Ziplines, Moose Tours, Monkey Trunks, and Storyland. We decided to take the more natural route of enjoying the scenic area by spending our two weekdays off of work to do some camping and hiking. We thoroughly researched and then chose to stay at the Hancock State Park Campground, on the West side of the pass, but found that the campground required at least a 50’ walk from the parking lot to the campsites, so we opted for the lethargic car style camping offered at Big Rock Campground just across the street. ... read more

I am just back from working at a summer camp in America! I was working at an All Girls camp in New Hampshire! It was amazing! The camp was a small, private, non- competitive camp up in the White Mountains. I was the arts and crafts counselor as well as a cabin counselor! Day to Day live at camp was tiring but so much fun! I was teaching around 5 lessons a day - but its hardly difficult - just give the kids some glitter, pipe cleaners and gem stones and they can be kept entertained for hours! The special days at camp were so good, especially 4th of July! It is such an experience being able to be in America for such a special occasion. We all got dressed up in the colours of our ... read more
