blog 10-15-17 Hoover Dam Today we wanted to get up and out early. We wanted to take the Dam tour and I read that the tickets sell out early and you can only buy them in person. So we were up at 6:30 and out of here by 8:35 am. The dam was not far from our campground and as we drove just one mile we could see Lake Mead but a little longer to go til we got to the dam. We parked and went to the tour desk and Ginnie and I were the last 2 tickets sold for the 9:30 tour. We were ushered in to see a 10 min movie on the building of the dam then whisked away to a waiting elevator that took us 52 floors down in 90 seconds. ... read more

Blog 10-14-17 Red Rock Canyon It was supposed to be a lazy morning with all of us sleeping in but somebody forgot to tell the rest of the world. It started with the dogs waking up before 7 wanting to go out. Then Watson wouldn't go back to bed and I was awake for the day. I went outside to make a phone call not to disturb Ginnie and Watson heard me talking so he started barking. I got him outside with me then Ginnie got a phone call, we were not to have a late sleep. We moved around slowly, had coffee outside for the first time on our trip. It has been too cold in the morning or too hot or something but it never happened. There was a brisk breeze but it was ... read more

Blog 10-13-17 Fresno, CA to Boulder City, NV We were up and moving at the crack of dawn, well 7:00 am. The clutter was put away, the fence was stowed, the water, sewer and electric lines were all disconnected and put in their compartments and we were ready to hit the road by 8:20. We still hadn't walked the dogs and disposed of the garbage but all that was done by 8:50. After the car was connected we pulled out of the campground by 9 am, a new record. We did have to get gas and that was an ordeal but we were finally on the road by 9:20 am. We traveled south on 41 then picked up 99 South and were on our way for a long ride. The goal was to get to Boulder ... read more

Sorry we didn't send more postings while traveling, but much of the time we didn't have a strong internet connection; at the cottage none at all. The trip was fabulous. Country was beautiful as you might expect, but also lots of interesting things in terms of archeology, geology, and history. Weather in mid- 60's entire trip, but far less rain than expected. We had some misting on many days, some beautiful sunny days, and only two or three with significant rain. But remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing. We came prepared so the weather didn't stop us. Our Ireland adventure started in Dublin where we spent 3 days. Highlights were doing a literary tour of the city, visiting Trinity College and seeing the Book of Kells bound writing of the ... read more

Geo: 35.9786, -114.834Tue 14th we drove about an hour to Hoover Dam, so renamed from Boulder Dam in 1947. (President Herbert Hoover, not FBI's Edgar Hoover.) The dam was built in four years from 1931 to 1935, mainly for flood control and water storage. Electricity generation was an afterthought, but a good one. Electricity revenue has paid for the dam construction ($165M) and still pays for all its operating costs. This piece of infrastructure funding works so well that the Federal Government has never done it again (or so our guide said, wryly). We did the grand tour of the power plant and the dam itself, about an hour or so. Very interesting going inside the dam tunnels and getting an appreciation of how big it was. 660 feet thick at the base (!) and 726 feet ... read more

Today we headed in the wrong direction (again!) so that we could visit the Mojave Desert and then head on up to Las Vegas for a few days before concluding our journey through middle America on Route 66. After taking a few photos this morning in downtown Barstow, we drove east along I-40 back to the entrance to the Mojave Desert National Preserve. We drove in the Kelbaker Road towards the Kelso Depot Visitor Centre making a stop at the Kelso Dunes along the way. These are huge sand dunes in the middle of the desert that are made by the wind blowing sand from Soda Lake, a dry lake, near Zzyzx. The sand laden winds hit the Granite Mountains and dump the sand in front of them thereby creating the massive sand dunes. You can ... read more

Hoover Dam is one of the top 100 Wonders of the World. Located between Arizona and Nevada, it is a straddle for the Colorado River, a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the River. An engineering and architectural wonder it was the world's largest dam in 1930 when it was constructed. It is a Historic landmark and one of the most visited structures in the United States. After the September 11 tragedy of 2001, the security of the dam became heightened. Nothing to be feared, it’s nothing like boarding a plane security. In late 2010 the construction of a bypass bridge over the dam began. The bridge was to divert the overwhelming traffic away from the dam. The original two way highway crossing the dam could no longer handle that much traffic. With a ... read more
