I had a 50-50 call whilst the sun was beginning to set - Try and get to a viewpoint in Scottsbluff or give up and head to Alliance for the night... I went for Scottsbluff. It’s the back roads of West Nebraska and my final westerly point before heading back to the east coast (momentarily.) With the likelihood I was going to miss the viewpoint at the National Park through darkness I probably should have called it off and gone to Alliance instead. But I sped along toward the setting sun and by the time I arrived it was too late. As I approached town on top of a hill with the city lit up I started channel changing on the radio. I have been so close to just buying a cable to connect my ipod ... read more

Saturday Oct 15 and Sunday Oct 16 - After a good nights rest at Julesburg I took a U turn at Ogallala after driving around in it a bit as the only reason I wanted to go there is because it was featured in the movie Lonesome Dove. I then headed back Northwest to Scotts Bluff , Neb. I toured the Morman trail, Chimney Rock and Scotts Bluff and went to Register Cliff in Wyoming then was planning on heading north on Hwy 85 to the Black Hills but had a oil cooler line leak in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Gothenburg is located in the Interstate that runs east to west at the north end of the state. The town has a number of old historical houses and buildings, however it was the Pony Express Station that got us to leave the Interstate for a few minutes.Did you know the Pony Express operated for only 18 months and ran from Missouri to California. Riders as young as 11 years of age were paid $25 a week to carry the mail While the station has been moved from its original site to a Gothenburg park. Admission is FREE. The old Sun Theater was operated as an opera house from 1909 to 1926 and later became a movie theater where the cost to see a movie was 10 cents for children and 20 cents for adults. It is currently operated ... read more

Have you ever been to a missile silo? Well we have. We headed out, just off the highway to a Minuteman Missile Silo. There was a very interesting guide there. He actually had worked at the site for many years. He gave us very informative tour and answered numerous questions. We drove on to the Badlands National Park. This area is formed by dry winds and arid conditions. I was surprised by the shear size of the park. There were great overlooks where you could see for miles. On the way to our hotel in Scottsbluff Ne, took off and drove to the small town of Hemingford. Ed's mother ,Rita, was born there. We drove around the quaint little town and the area. Very nice, small town, clean and quiet. Just what you would imagine in ... read more

I got up at 6:30 this morning feeling well rested and ready for the day vowing to get an early start. After having coffee, walking Oscar, and visiting with some fishermen I am again behind. These chores are getting in the way. Washed the dishes, put the chair away secured everything, disconnected and went to the dump station. Needed water too. I did improve on yesterday, it was 8:40 when I got on the road. The drive is becoming almost effortless, open road at 75 mph and fewer cars all the time. The landscape has changed and now I really feel like I’m in the west. There are more cattle ranches, wheat fields, and horses grazing, continues to be flat. I stopped at a Walmart in North Platt and went food shopping. I am craving vegetables ... read more

How can you get up at 6:30 am and not get on the road til 9:15? I am an expert at getting distracted. The morning on the lake was just beautiful. The temperature was 47 degrees outside so there was mist coming off the lake. I had to get dressed warmly to go outside and enjoy my coffee, my UMBC hoodie kept me nice and warm. The crows were talking, the herons were flying in for their favorite fishing spot, and the king fishers were in a fallen tree watching for their breakfast to appear. I took a few pictures, got out the binoculars and watched as the sun rose and the drama unfolded. So many fish jumped it surely must have been their breakfast time. Before I knew it it was after 8 and I ... read more

Etter ... read more

Hi everyone, today we stopped in Gering, Nebraska. It is Gerry's birthday and here we are in a beautiful city owned rv park. Well kept and all very friendly. We got here around 4pm and didn't have to go into town this time as I did shopping the day before. Nebraska was a surprize as getting here it was flat and dry and then we find cliffs and bluffs. Beautiful. The weather is only... read more
