The lovely little town of Jackson shuts down for a month in between the ski and summer seasons. But we were in luck, and when we left, it happened to be the reopening date for the aerial tram to the top of Mount Rendezvous from nearby Teton Village. So, we went up to the top to where the snow is. Others took skis. We wore runners. It was snow/hailing most of the time we were up there, and we had to take refuge in the waffle shop, which smelt sooooo good. But we saw the really good views from the top looking over the valley and in the other direction to more mountains that were obscured by the first range. We then headed north through parts of Grand Teton NP that we had not yet visited ... read more

This fall break we are heading to Seattle where Mark got a new job assignment; we are to take a look at the area we will be moving to in the Spring of 2018. This is our great American road trip #9. We have had many road trips in the past 7 years, and I still marvel at the amazing road network in the United States. You probably are wondering why that is a marvel, but you really should look at it from my point of view. I have seen a lot of the world and there is nowhere else in the world where you can get on the road and go endlessly around an entire continent. That aside, I grew up in Africa where the roads leave a lot to the imagination; like I, mention ... read more

Today was a better day. I spent the morning fly fishing in the park, I'm sure that helped my attitude. I started first at Nez Perce Creek, a tributary of the Firehole River. I caught one small brown trout there, then moved to the Firehole River itself, where I caught two more brown trout. Yee-haa! At both rivers I was fishing alongside thermal features, with steam rising out of the ground and hot water running into the creek, yet there were plenty of happy trout in the stream. At one spot on Nez Perce Creek I could feel the warm ground through my boots. There is a lifetime of great trout fishing in Yellowstone. You don't need a state fishing license in the park, only a park fishing permit, which is reasonably priced at $18 for ... read more

There was frost on the car when I got up this morning. It was only 28 degrees here in West Yellowstone. What a difference from a week ago in Zion, where it was 102. We spent basically the whole day today in the national park and only covered half of it, despite driving about a hundred miles. Yellowstone is a big place. Barb and I have been to Yellowstone once before, 24 years ago, in 1993. Of course, memories have a way of sweetening with time, but our visit today didn't measure up to 1993. The roads and facilities were in better shape but there was far more people, and that is in the middle of the week and after Labor Day. The bigger disappointment was that we saw far less wildlife. Maybe it was due ... read more

So today we left Missoula and started the day with backtracking our way east on I-90, past Butte, Montana, then south on secondary roads to West Yellowstone, Montana. Our campground is right in the town and right on the border of the national park. After checking in and setting up, Barb and I scouted out the town a little but then she found a quilt shop while I went across the street to a fly shop. We had supper at the camper then made a short foray into the park. We saw several elk and a huge traffic jam when they crossed the road. We stopped at the first park campground we came to and stayed for the ranger presentation, which was about the park's wolf population. It was just enough to get us excited for ... read more

There was a pretty brisk wind overnight from the west and this morning the wildfire smoke was particularly bad, enough to irritate your eyes and throat. We met up with David and Caroline this morning and drove north a ways to the National Bison Range, a large area that is part of the national wildlife refuge system, managed for bison. If you are ever in the Missoula area I can heartily recommend a visit to the refuge. There is a 19 mile gravel road loop that takes you up a mountainside and back down and then across a lower grassland, and its much like a camera safari. We saw plenty of bison but also pronghorn, mule deer, whitetail deer, several coyotes, and a couple grouse type birds that I believe were blue grouse. The scenery is ... read more

We drove up to Missoula, Montana, today to visit with our nephew David and his wife Caroline. The smoke haze was heavy all day, more so the closer we got to Missoula. We drove in on I-90 and there was no problem from the wildfires but we did hear that another more secondary route is closed. Unfortunately the haze was so thick that we can't see the mountains surrounding Missoula very well, but definitely the terrain here is more mountainous and forested than where we have been before today. It was good to see Dave and Caroline. We had supper together at the camper, then followed them into the city where we took a walk along the Clark Fork river. We plan to do a little more sightseeing in the area tomorrow. ... read more

Day 11 Kalispell to Calgary Holy crap I’m tired. I think I’ve finally had enough. I want to go home. Ken does too. Don’t get me wrong its been an absolute blast but we’re both ready for home. Today’s drive was relatively tame. Two and a bit hours over the “Going-to-the-Sun Road” and we’d be at the border. Then 3 “fun-filled” hours on Highway 2 from Cardston all the way home. Ken and I had snuck out after dark at “the quiet hippy’s house” in Victor to take a look at my Pony for any issues causing the overheating. We’d determined she likely just needs a coolant flush. Failing that it could be the thermostat. Both easy fixes once we’re home. No signs of head gasket failure or other terrible sounding issues. All I asked for ... read more

This morning while it was still cool we visited nearby Bannack State Park. Bannack is a ghost town. It was a gold rush town that started in 1862 and was deserted by the 1940's. In fact it was the first territorial capital of Montana, which must have been a pretty wild place back then. The buildings are well preserved. They did warn visitors that there are rattlesnakes in the town. In the evening we went to the Dillon rodeo, and it was really great. Even Kate liked it. We had never seen a live rodeo before, and the skills and horsemanship were impressive to say the least. The smoky haze in the air seems worse today. We hear that there are wildfires up around Missoula, which is our destination for tomorrow. It should be another interesting day. ... read more

Today we continued our journey north, staying on I-15, past Pocatello, Idaho, and into Montana. We are camped outside the town of Dillon. Since this is the start of Labor Day weekend we had to pay for two nights, and we could use a day of staying put right now anyway. Traveling north through eastern Idaho the low mountains became flat grasslands and sagebrush again, with lots of cattle. One area looked like it had been a lava flow. When we crossed into southwest Montana we started back into some low mountains again, with grass on the lowlands and trees on the mountains, and still lots of cattle. We saw a few pronghorn antelope, too. We noticed that the sky was very hazy to the north of us. At the campground people told us that the ... read more
