Today was the first completely unplanned day of this road trip - I didn't expect even to set foot in Minnesota, but thanks to an unexpected message from a friend, my trip took this detour. And it was a very good day. I did a lot of driving, but it didn't really seem like that much (except in road work; see below). One of the benefits of driving through Minnesota during this time of year is all the great foliage you can see. The leaves are changing colors, and at times it can be almost as distracting as those mountains and badlands from further out west. The best display of foliage I saw today was at St. Olaf College, but I'm getting ahead of myself. I left my hotel in South Dakota before dawn, and I ... read more

After a slow morning, we got up and moving on a mission: to see some artsy stuff, and check out the biggest mall in the country. We started at Mall of America. It's about a 20 minute drive outside the city, but good lord is it immense. You walk in, and the central courtyard has a full amusement park. It's not just one roller coaster, it's three. And two dozen other rides. Of course, there's a couple hundred stores and cafes, an arcade, a kids area, and about 11 parking lots. And a hotel. I literally can't even explain it. We just wandered around, played some in the arcade, window shopped, did a little actual shopping, and then just laughed about there being an actual amusement park in a mall. When we got back to the ... read more

Lots and lots of nothing. That was today. We drove, for 10 hours, seeing nothing but fields. One segment was almost 400 miles, another more than 150. There was little exciting or special. We did stop by Sioux Falls for lunch, where we got sushi. Walking out, Serena and I went to the car, turned around, and Laura and Amit were gone. We spent 15 minutes looking for them and it turns out Laura was craving ice cream and just headed across the road, no warning. And then they were just waiting over there. There's a small chance I may have driven over to get them, and then driven off as they reached for the door. Eye for an eye? Anyway, we got in late, but did finally get to our Airbnb. For this city, Serena ... read more

Several weeks before I arrived in Rockford IL, I had had a malfunction of the toilet in the Pilgrim. Normally, on that particular brand of toilet, the flushing mechanism operates via a foot lever that returns to a neutral position after flushing. Suddenly, it stopped returning to neutral. That was not a big deal, as all that was necessary was to lift the lever with my toe to return the lever to neutral. When I had the Pilgrim in the shop for maintenance, the toilet was one item on the repair list. As I noted in my previous blog, after retrieving the trusty old gal from the dealership I had taken her to a friend’s place (my sister-in-law’s brother) for storage for five days before I departed Rockford on a Wednesday. On the first weekend following ... read more

The last two weeks gave been crazy busy! Our last full week at camp was amazing, I had the oldest girl cabin (aged 12-14) and it was awesome! Our overnight camp was at this island in the middle of lake independence so we had to canoe out there. It was beautiful and had an amazing view of the sunset and sunrise. This was our final week of camp and it was a sampler week which means it runs from Sunday to Wednesday. I has the youngest girls (aged 7-9) and it was full on. I helped at the horse barn and it was awesome! I wish I had a chance to do that more this summer. Each week we have a closing campfire where all the kids and counsellors put a friendship stick into a small ... read more

This week is our last full week at camp and next week is what we call a sampler week so it finishes on Wednesday instead of the Friday. They always finish on a sampler week as it takes us a full day on Thursday to clean all of camp etc. I'm so excited to finish camp! It's been a great journey and I have met wonderful people but I am ready to explore more of America now! Last week was great! I had one of the youngest cabins so it was tough at times but I was working with one of my best friends with camp (Olivia) We have got along well since week one and we are both so so similar. Each week we take the kids on one overnight camping trip where we make ... read more
