Nov 7. Baltimore,MD Vitto had a busy day addressing all the damages caused to the boat by running it under the conditions that we did yesterday. The entire city of Baltimore is a Maritime Museum. It used to be a main ship maker in the past. The visitors can feel the history in the air. It is not a touristy port like Annapolis and that makes it much more interesting. It is historic and interesting. The maritime museum city has many faces. There are regular museums in every block of the waterfront but also there is a fleet of different types of ships that have been donated to the city by different entities to be converted into maritime self learning schools and interactive museums. All ships of the fleet are in pristine condition and open to ... read more

Nov 6. Chesapeake City, MD to Baltimore,MDNov 6. Chesapeake City, MD to Baltimore,MD 0633. Overcast this morning. Grey skies and light rain. At 0830 we hauled anchor and left Chesapeake City, MD. We continue on the last miles of the 23 nm long C&D canal. The generator was overheating so at 1030 we anchored on the side of the canal at 39 27.26N 75 58.51 to check it. Once anchored it ran with no problem. Vitto made his usual nice breakfast eggs, bacon, toasts with jelly and a hot cup of tea. It was great to have power again. This breakfast gave us the energy to get through the rest of the day that was about to come. At 1104 we were going around Turkey LT and at 1122 we were out of the C&D canal ... read more

Happy Birthday, Doug! Surprise, we are going to Vegas!!!! Doug's 45th birthday arrived and little did he know that we would be on a plane heading for Las Vegas that very evening! I had made all of the arrangements and packed our bags. All that remained was to leave the house at 5pm. I had set a few clues out along the way and I was anxious to see if Doug picked up on them. When he got into my car, I had the satelitte radio set on the weather channel for Detroit/Las Vegas. He noticed.............then I have him a box to open with an airplane on the front...as he was opening it the CD playing switched over to the next track...............Faith Hill started singing "Hey Baby, Let's go to Vegas....." as he opened the box ... read more

June 21 - 24, 2007 I traveled for my first time to Baltimore for business. We had a two-day workshop on Saturday and Sunday, so we flew in on Thursday. Thursday evening after we checked in at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor, we headed down for a walk around the Harbor. All along the it there are vendors with lots of little knick-knacks, jewelry, purses, and all sorts of cool things. We made our way over to the Hard Rock Cafe where we sat at their outdoor bar and had a pre-dinner drink. The harbor seems to come alive at night. Once all of the dragon paddle boats are docked and the sun begins to set, the people just flood there to eat at one of the many restaurants. There was one place where you ... read more

So, I've been home over a month and I have about two entries I wrote in Vietnam that I never posted and one more I should write to conclude the trip. This is just an entry promising that I will post these entries in the next day or two. And a little update: I just started taking martial arts classes with a crazy Vietnamese grandmaster who was the Southeast Asian champ. He swears he will teach me Vietnamese if it kills me. That would be helpful (learning more Vietnamese, not getting killed) in case I am able to return to Vietnam next summer. Victor already said that he'd love me to come back. But of course, I can't afford it if I'm not getting paid as a consultant, so it depends if they need me to ... read more

Baltimore is a favorite city of mine and not just because of my beloved Baltimore Orioles. It also has an amazing history behind it and still maintains much of that history to this day. Its Inner Harbor has become a famous spot and gets better with each year and seems to get most of the attention. However, Baltimore has so much more to offer. Having seen quite a bit of the Inner Harbor from trips and from when I used to live in Washington, DC, I decided to take a look at some of the historical points and museums that I hadn't visited previously. I only had an afternoon since I was scheduled to enjoy the Red Sox v. Orioles baseball game that evening so had to keep moving. First up on the historical Balitmore agenda, ... read more

After seeing some of Baltimore's historical sites and after having sweated for a time in the hot and humid weather, decided it was time to visit some nice air conditioned museums for awhile. First up was the Sports Legend Museum located next to Camden Yards. The Museum focuses mainly on Maryland professional and college sports. Most popular are the exhibits for the Orioles and Colts/Ravens. Cal Ripken has his own section with several photos taken during his career including some candids with his family. That was probably my fave. The Museum is very well put together. As luck would have it, the daughter of Babe Ruth was there signing autographs. After the Sports Museum, I headed the few block to the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum. That Museum is located in Babe's childhood home and has ... read more

Had a meeting in Washington, DC and decided to stayover the weekend to explore and site see. Having been to Baltimore and the Inner Harbor several times in the past and with a weekend to see some sites, I decided to view some of the historical locals that I've previously overlooked. Headed first for Fort McHenry which was the Fort which protected Port Baltimore for many years. It famously did so during the War of 1812 (fought from 1812-1815), so much so that it inspired Frances Scott Key to write the Star-Spangled Banner. As noted on the Fort McHenry site, "“O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,” a large red, white and blue banner? “Whose broad stripes and bright stars . . . were so gallantly streaming!” over the star-shaped Fort McHenry during ... read more
