As we drove the coast road from Tallahassee passing through two states Alabama and Mississippi we knew that we would spend more time in these places but for now we were New Orleans bound. As we drew closer to New Orleans we could see the oil rigs out at sea and the Gulf how vulnerable the coast line was along these coastal towns. We saw vacant blocks of beach front properties. With a drive that leads nowhere, a house that once stood and that had been destroyed by hurricanes which torment this part of the world. People have rebuilt wonderful new homes, but have raised them high on piers , just to give extra protection from raising tides.Beaches were full with family's having fun. Our last morning in New Orleans. Since we were starting our road trip today, we had plenty of free time, so decided to spend the morning in New Orleans, seeing one of the places that we hadn't visited yet. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest and most famous cemetery in New Orleans. Due to vandalism by some idiots, the cemetery cannot be visited by individual tourist, and instead people can only visit it on an organised tour. Why is it that the few always spoil it for the many. We had booked a tour the day before with Gray Line, their 'Cemetery and Voodoo Walking Tour', which was $20+. There are free walking tours, where you only have to pay the $2 entrance fee to the cemetery, but I think we left it too ... read more

Our last full day in New Orleans. We had already done quite a lot during our stay in New Orleans, and we had something a little bit special planned for that evening, so we decided to take it easy during the day. We had done pretty much all we wanted to do and had booked cemetery tour for the following morning, so our first part of call was to head out for some breakfast. After doing some research online, we found a place that had good reviews and was a typical diner set up. I hadn't been to a proper diner yet, so wanted to get that checked off my USA to do list. The place we found was on Magazine Street so we headed back to the Garden District. It wasn't too busy as we ... read more

Another busy day! We were up early again in the morning as there was a lot we wanted to pack into today. The first thing on our itinerary for the day was to attend the New Orleans School of Cooking. The cuisine of this region is one of things that attracted me to visit the South and I was looking forward to learning more about it. Even though the cooking school is centrally located, we drove there. Having a car is making me so lazy on this trip! Once, we were there, we got all checked in and headed through to the kitchen and dining room. I'm a bit disappointed that this cooking class is really just a demonstration as I would have preferred something more hands on, but meant we got to be lazy, which ... read more

Today we decided to have a more relaxing day, so we'd had a few busy ones. Our first stop was some brunch and I had found a place online that I had wanted to try. Atchafalaya is on the edge of the Garden District, so we drove over there. It didn't take too long to get there. This was our first time to visit the Garden District. The area seemed really residential. We headed over to the restaurant and got a table out on the deck, tucked away from the street. I liked this spot as you could people watch the goings on on the street, without being too close. The restaurant was in a really cute, wooden house. The building has been a restaurant since 1924, but has been through a few incarnations to become ... read more

We left Fort Collins early in the morning. We had booked spaces on the shuttle bus to Denver airport. As we got on the highway, we hit really bad traffic and we were panicking for a bit that we would miss our flight as we were going at a snail's pace. However, we got past the jam and picked up speed. We didn't get to the airport too much later than we should have done. We had already done online check-in, so after dropping our bags, we headed through security. The queues were quite big, but they moved pretty swiftly. We were starving, so we had a look around for somewhere to eat. We had a while before our flight so we picked a nice looking restaurant to get some breakfast in. We quickly ordered our ... read more

The trip into Nola was hazardous rain on and off. Angie drove to the conditions. Francine only squealed once and held on tight to the OS bar. Traffic was backed up approaching the city and we needed a bathroom break, pulled off and getting back on required a u turn, but Angie was in a lane a and wanting to make a u turn and because of the hard rain didn't see the no u turn sign and flashing lights and a whooping siren from the police car behind her, alerted her to that fact. So we pulled over 3 lanes but the cop just went by us. Thank heavens the cop didn't want to write a ticket in a cloud burst. Our hotel Courtyard Marriott was on St. Charles Street just one block from the ... read more

Our first stop was New Orleans to visit with one of the four musketeers, Brooke Biggs. We found a nice state park near their home, Fairview-Riverside State Park ($25/night) that turned out to be very nice. We ate a late dinner at Morton's featuring some great seafood. The next day the Biggs were kind enough to take us on a tour of New Orleans and let us rest and enjoy. They drove us across the 24 mile bridge to New Orleans; we went to Landry's Seafood for lunch. Then they took us to visit one of the New Orleans Dens to see parade floats, the Mississippi River, French Quarter, levy system. They then prepared a delicious dinner for us. It was a fantastic experience thanks to great hosts. ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778This was my last day in NOLA and I was ready to head home to eat a giant salad. I'd had a long week of binging on food and drinking every night. It was time to relax again. Not that I actually know how to be still for very long. I get bored and need to move or accomplish something. Anyway, check out was 10am but my classes were going to last until 1pm. So, that meant dragging all my luggage with me class to class at the conference center. While I wasn't the only nurse doing so I think I was probably the one with the most luggage. I felt like I would have been amusing to watch- midget buried under all her own crap moving at turtle pace. After my classes, it was ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778This was my last full day of classes and I'm not gonna lie, I was way more interested in sight-seeing at this point. I went to a morning class and then headed back out to meet Anna for last minute wandering and eating. We were supposed to do another walking tour that day but we cancelled last minute so we could souvenir shop. I met her at the famed Cafe du Monde so we could compare it to the beignets we had our first night in town. Verdict? I prefer the other place more. Cafe du Monde was crispier and I enjoyed the softer ones more. It all comes down to personal taste, though. =) We ended up back at French Marker for MORE oysters, and to shop. I ended up buying some mardi ... read more
