The one about the rest of Mardi Gras But first, I few things I forgot to write about in earlier blogs. I toured the Katrina exhibit at the State Museum, next to the cathedral on Jackson Square. I am sure I am not the only one who forgot that Hurricane Rita hit this same region a short time after Katrina causing equal damage to towns that had been spared by Katrina’s wrath. The pictures and videos they showed of both events were amazing and awful. I was humbled. It is tragic for me to see so much devastation still remains here. Coffee and Beignets at Café Du Monde, yummy. The tour gave us a coupon for free servings of both, a nice treat. Moving on, I woke up Sunday morning very tired. This parade watching is ... read more

Travels with Snowbirds 2015 February 12 to 17, Mardi Gras The one all about Mardi Gras parades The festival of Mardi Gras starts about 2 weeks before Fat Tuesday. Festival is the operative word. There are parade, concerts, masked balls and other pomp and circumstance you might expect at a 2-week long party. There are many social clubs called Krewes. To be a member of a Krewe involves a financial contribution as well as a time and work commitment. Plans for the next year’s events start 2 weeks after the current years activities end. Annual dues can be as little as $100 to up to multi thousands. The dues pay for floats and throwaways – beads and other trinkets. The higher the financial contribution and the larger the krewe memberhip, the more elaborate the float and ... read more

Happy Mardi Graaaaaaaaas, pa še pusta hrusta zraven. Sem skočila na največji karneval v Ameriki, v New Orleans. Moja karnevalska duša je bila skeptična, ker prihajam iz Notranjske in najboljšega karnevala na svetu (z vsem spoštovanjem do Ptuja) in sem vedela, da bo manjkala čarovnica Mati Uršula. Vseeno, sem morala povohljat, kako to počnejo tu.

February 10 and 11 2015, Pass Christian LA to New Orleans LA for MARDI GRAS!! The one about Fantasy Tours It was an interesting night that night at Pass Christian. Dogs that bark in the daytime generally do not shut up overnight, or so I have learned. Yes, an interesting night, and of course I really didn’t fall asleep until 30 minutes before it was time to wake up. I took Winston for a walk in the road, and 2 dogs from the campground followed me. Poor Winston, he squatted to do his business and that little shit kicker Chihuahua was right up his butt. He got kicked away. As I walked, I had the opportunity to peer into the woods across the street. Something I bet you haven’t thought about any more than I did ... read more

I must say that on my bucket list of places to go, New Orleans has always been on the top of it. And when I say New Orleans I don't mean Bourbon Street or Mardi Gras, I mean I want to go there and experience the culture. I feel like you can't stay within the U.S. of A and get such a different culture than little old Jersey than to go on down to the south. I wanted to go to a place where people spoke English that I couldn't understand, ate gator off a stick, practiced Voodoo and Catholicism all in the same breath and drank Bloody Mary's morning, noon, and night. This quest to experience a culture far different than Jersey without even leaving the states was made possible by none other than Derik. ... read more

New Orleans was my first solo trip. I had booked a room thru airbnb at a house located in the picturesque neighborhood of Bywater, which is about 2 miles from the French Quarter. When I arrived, Felina, my landlady, a 30 something year old woman with tattoos all over her body, welcomed me to her Gothic haunted house in a block where some of the houses still showed signs of devastation or of an economy that hadn't been very generous with it. I was planning on getting in as much jazz as I could. My first stop that night was the Spotted Cat. The singer captivated me with her Billy Holliday voice. I couldn't believe I had found such a talent just in the first place I happened to stop. From there I went to the ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778A blissful morning dawned today. A lie-in - the first for a long time - was on the cards and very much appreciated. However, there was a rather rude awakening for me, since my lovely friend Ali had challenged me to the MNDA ice-bucket challenge. So, off to the ice machine it was for me, and then a very cold, wet start to the day! I was grateful of it once we got out into the steaming streets of the city though as the mercury was hitting the mid thirties by the time we reached our first destination - the alleyways of the French Quarter, which we meandered down on our way to get to the trolley that would take us to the Garden District. On our way through the town, we stopped off ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778We were once again awake early this morning, our body clocks still on Nevada time, and used to the 6am starts on the tour, our eyes pinged open at 8am. We had nowhere to be until 11am, and so we took our time getting ready and then made out way out onto the streets of the French Quarter. After strolling around some of the curiosity shops and art galleries of Royal Street, we passed through Jackson Square again. Here we were treated to impromptu jazz performances by two sets of buskers. One pair singing and trumpeting, while the other substituted the trumpet for a huge euphonium. New Orleans truly is the city of Jazz, with musical performances not confined to the jazz bars of Bourbon and Frenchmen streets, but where is is not uncommon ... read more
