We went on the Historic Tour which entered through the Natural Cave Opening. Before the tour they warned us of the "Fat Man's Misery" and that we would have to squeeze through some areas in the cave, and stoop in others. One man in the group bailed and another kept looking at everyone's midsections apparently to determine if they would make it!! We saw many of the classic cave sites. Mammoth Cave was out of Junior Ranger books. They didn’t send them when I wrote requesting them along with maps and camping info, so the kids didn’t get MC badges. We decided we didn’t want to spend another night which we had planned, so after lunch we drove toward Great Smoky Mountain National Park and spent the night at Adventure Bound RV park outside of Gatlinburg. ... read more

Friday July 19 – left at 10:45 am. Drove to Cave City, KY. Traffic was awful. We usually leave super early, so increased traffic may have been due to the time of day. We were completely stopped for several minutes several times. Our reservation for this night was for a tent sight with no electricity and due to the heat we slept at Comfort Inn in Cave City, and had dinner at El Mazatlan. Sat, July 20 – drove into Mammoth Cave National Park. HOT (96*). Went on two cave tours – Gothic Ave. and Domes and Dripstones. It was so nice to be in the caves where it is a constant 54*. Gothic Ave – entered through Natural Cave Opening. Cave is amazing and HUGE. There are five levels and 420 miles of cave already ... read more

We made our drive northward toward Louisville. Andrew has a cousin who lives in Louisville, and we were hoping to make her Christening tomorrow. The weather was intense for the drive. At one point, rain started coming down so hard that visibility was severely impaired. It was a situation where we had to slow way down to see but were afraid of getting rear ended by someone else who didn't slow down. We pulled over as soon as we could to let the worst of the storm pass, but it was an anxious few minutes there. On our drive, we stopped at Mammoth Caves. I had the historic tour reserved for us and Paul and Colleen. Unfortunately, due to needing to be in certain towns for a Super Charger for the Tesla, they couldn't end up ... read more

Today was a nice quiet day of cave exploration. We bought the tickets for an 8:30 and a 12:45 tour of Mammoth Cave yesterday, so our only obligation of the day was to show up. For some reason, we both slept well last night, in spite of the bed being a little hard. After a quick breakfast, we headed over to Mammoth Cave National Park around 7:30. We stopped at the entrance to take the obligatory picture, unfortunately we were the only ones around so we couldn't get a picture of both of us together. We had plenty of time, so we did a little hiking over to the Sand Cave on a path right next to the entrance. Then we headed over to the Visitors Center, but it was still a little early as they ... read more

Geo: 37.1831, -86.15So how often do you get to view the World's Largest Underpants without jostling with peak season crowds. We knew we had to take advantage of our re-entry into Kentucky in order to get the priority viewing tickets for this record setting garment (it was an exhibit in the Western Kentucky University Museum and, to be honest, we were the only ones there on the day we went- apparently it's not quite the draw for others as it is for us). It's not the only unusual item here and the first floor even had a surprisingly large tribute to Duncan Hines, a Bowling Green native. Back in the days when we did own a house, DH was never quite sure where the kitchen was so, given that cooking wasn't her thing, it wasn't surprising ... read more

Geo: 37.1831, -86.15We had another great road trip day. We left Morehead a little after 8:00 am, went across the time zone into Central Time, and arrived at Mammoth Caves around 11:30 am CT. We drove around Lexington, Kentucky and passed the Keaneland Horse Track, that was surrounded by rolling hills with white fences....definitely what we think of when we think of Kentucky. We we then stopped by Lincoln's birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky, before heading on to Mammoth Caves. Mammoth Caves has the distinction of being the longest cave system in the world, with over 400 miles of documented tunnels. We did 2 miles of them. It was pretty impressive. On to St. Louis, MO tomorrow. It is a 6 hour drive but it is supposed to rain tomorrow, so we will see how far we ... read more

Last time I visited a cave was 3 years ago in Virginia, and I still had vivid memories. Visiting a cave is like entering a totally different world, not spooky but fascinating. At last minute we decided to go to Kentucky state, mainly to visit the Mammoth cave national park. In Virginia, the cave was small but full of stalactites, stalagmites and other cave structures. In Mammoth cave, it's totally different as its more the sheer size of the cave system that is impressing. During a 2 hour tour, you visit only a very small fraction of the cave system. Some rooms, are big like the biggest concert hall you might imagine, while between them, very narrow passages, (vertical or horizontal), separate them. The forest above is also very beautiful, consisting of very old oak trees. ... read more
