Hello All! This is the first post! Today is 12/13, and we're leaving for New Orleans next Thursday. Right now I'm just trying to get everything done-laundry, money (wanna give to the A and B Smith travel fund?), puppy, etc. This is our first time traveling with a dog, so I'm a little nervous about that. I'm a planner by nature, so I think Ozy will be okay. He's got a little limp right now, but it's getting better. I guess I should explain why this trip is so important to me. New Orleans isn't just a city to my husband, it's home. It's my second home. Before Katrina, most people saw NOLA as a place to party, to get drunk, to lose your inhibitions. That may be true for tourists, but for us it's ... read more

I thought it would be nice to give a little bio. information about each of our family members, so that you could get to know us a little better. So, here we go: George: George has worked as a full-time evangelist for 18 years, after graduating from the East Tennessee School of Preaching and Missions in 1988. He has labored with the Airport Church of Christ, Pacifica Church of Christ, and the Menlo Church of Christ; the latter two being stateside mission works. 11/20/2006 12:08 PM We made it to Cedar Rapids by 6pm but it was close. The first thing we noticed as we pulled into town was that the place smelled of oatmeal. Edward joked about there being an oatmeal plant here. As we neared the center of town there it was…oatmeal central. A huge Quaker Oats plant lit up the interstate. We found the venue and located Jason the promoter and started to get set up. He introduced us to the opener, Cold Mercy, and a few of the staff. Our green room was actually green, which always amuses me for some reason. They set our room up with beer, juice, water, and a homemade dinner made by Gayle from Nexxus. She made it vegan and included a side of beef to add to it for ... read more

Several months ago our family made the decision to move to Africa in order to do mission work. We spent the month of May in Malawi, and that was a life-changing experience for each one of us. While there, we often viewed things in light of "What if we lived here?" Initially, we planned to return to Malawi to work, but after much prayer and research, we decided that it would be better for us to pursue the idea of working in Tanzania. Well, now it is official! After months of not knowing where we might work, we now know that we will be moving to Moshi, Tanzania! It is simply amazing at how things just seem to start falling into place. God has truly answered our prayers. There are so many details that need to ... read more

My journey to Newton, Iowa, was from Rhinecliff, NY, through Chicago to Burlington, Iowa. I then drove to Newton via rental car. Newton is the historic home of the Maytag Corporation, which has recently been acquired by Whirlpool. The Newton locations are slated for closure in 2007 by Whirlpool, so if you want to see the town as "Home of the Maytag Company" (Maytag started out as a family-owned business and was founded by Frederick M. Maytag I), I suggest you go now. A major point of interest is the Newton Botonical Gardens on the Eastern side of town, and the Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge in nearby Prarie City. At the Wildlife Refuge you can see bison, real ones and stuffed ones. ... read more

Well, today I delivered the load at Carpentersville, IL, at 9:00 local time (6:00 am for me!) and no problem with load. I traveled yesterday and today from Nebraska into Illinois. The traffic over in this area is a killer, but the view is great. Both natural landscape and man-made cities look great from the privilaged point of view of an 18 wheeler driver seat! :)) I got a load going into Wisconsing, which will get me closer to one going back to Oregon, going home for time off! Yummieeee... can't wait!... read more

I realized that I forgot to put up the few pictures I took with Byers family relatives while I was home. There was no organized family event while I was home, so I didn't have a chance to see many members of the Byers clan, but I saw Grandma a few times and my Aunt and a couple cousins, too. My flight back to China left Des Moines at noon on Monday, so the question arose as to how I was going to get to the airport when both my mom and my sister were working. Luckily, Grandma happily agreed to take me to the airport instead. So, the morning of my flight, I was dropped off at Grandma's house at eight in the morning. We hung around and chatted for a while and then my ... read more

Today was the annual Yeager family picnic and it was great to see all the family together. We had lots of food, lots of great conversation, and the annual water fight. The water fight always makes me wonder, "Who are the real kids in this family?"... read more

So, AO and I leave in T minus one month. To the day. And I should start to get things ready to go. But I still have a whole month, so I probably won't! But getting this set up makes me feel like I am doing something. I'll try to update this while I am away, and I can add pictures and stuff of all of our crazy antics. So read if you are interested. ... read more
