Bison at Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge, Prarie City, IowaBison at Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge, Prarie City, IowaBison at Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge, Prarie City, Iowa

This bison isn't alive anymore, but looks life-like. On display at the museum at the Wildlife Refuge.
My journey to Newton, Iowa, was from Rhinecliff, NY, through Chicago to Burlington, Iowa. I then drove to Newton via rental car.

Newton is the historic home of the Maytag Corporation, which has recently been acquired by Whirlpool. The Newton locations are slated for closure in 2007 by Whirlpool, so if you want to see the town as "Home of the Maytag Company" (Maytag started out as a family-owned business and was founded by Frederick M. Maytag I), I suggest you go now.

A major point of interest is the Newton Botonical Gardens on the Eastern side of town, and the Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge in nearby Prarie City. At the Wildlife Refuge you can see bison, real ones and stuffed ones.
