It's great being home again, even if it's for too short a time. I haven't lived in Iowa since I left for university ten years ago, but every year that I'm gone, I appreciate it more and more. Every time I come back, I like to re-explore my home state and do all the tourist things that Iowans never do. So far this trip, I went to the Bob Feller Museum (Bob Feller is a famous Baseball Hall of Famer from Van Meter, Iowa), watched the sun rise over the cows across the road, mowed the lawn with the new John Deere, and made my mom drive into a cornfield and take a picture of me standing next to the corn. (Trust me, Iowans don't take pictures with corn. Only "city folk" do that.) ... read more

It's time already to pack for the big trip! We're trying to figure out exactly what we need... it's hard to know at this point! We've learned that Peru has the highest number of different climates within it than any other country, so packing the necessary clothing into a limited amount of space is tricky. We'll be carrying everything in big packs so that we can be very mobile. Right now our gameplan is to get to the Hilton in Lima and stay for a few days, figuring out what to do for the remaining 7 1/2 weeks! We hope to go to Bolivia, and maybe Chile and Argentina. We've found some places that house volunteers, mainly orphanages and missions. Very exciting! ... read more

I have purchased my plane ticket there, I have arranged my apartment there, and I'm starting to think about what I'll be taking. I get one carry-on and two checked bags without extra charge, so I'm hoping I can pull a Melvin Udall and get everything into those. I'm also debating about whether I need to get a different bookbag. I don't think mine is very anti-mugger-friendly. Too many pockets. I'm thinking something by Timbuk2, except those are kind of expensive. Birthday present from the 'rents, perhaps? ... read more

Is someone a leetle excited to be going to Ireland? I just purchased my plane ticket over there two days ago and I'm busy compiling an email list of people who want updates, so I thought I'd start my travel blog at the same time. I'm trying to arrange accomodations right now, I'll let you know when I hear back from the peoples. :P... read more

Well we were adventure kids this weekend, and in a completely different way. We had two amazing shows in Quincy. The woman in charge was very helpful and when we aksed her about a mechanic, she called and got us squeezed in. They were sweet peas. We took pictures of the set up process so you guys can see what we go through. Lovely. The town was really old and had beautiful homes. It is right along the Mississippi River. We finally had Mexican food and it was great. We had to wait 4 hours for the mechanics to just check out the car so we took their car to a great place. They even had mexican music playing. Our waiter was from Vista. He understood. About a week ago, we were at a sandwich shop ... read more

Well, two good friends drove up to Iowa on Friday, and we're gonna be heading back to Kansas today. The going-away party is in Topeka on the 9th, and hopefully we get a good turnout of friends. I'm almost done packing, so with a little more work today, I should be ready. Hopefully. I wish I could buy an mp3 player, but I'm too stubborn; I'd rather spend the money in Europe on something else. So, I guess I'll just have to settle for my good ole discman and mix CDs. I love music! I feel like the days are crawling by slowly, but I bet the next 4 go really quickly. I'll probably post once more before I leave for Spain. Feel free to leave me comments!... read more

And I'm back in Iowa. The past few days have been quite relaxing, with me both sleeping in, and taking naps. In my defense, I don't go to bed until 1 or 2 in the morning most nights. Eventually I'm gonna work a few 3rd shifts at the nursing home, so it would behoove me to be able to stay up late. The shift is 11pm-7am, and the last hour hurts. I can't wait to get my digital camera, so I can finally put some pictures up here. Three weeks before we leave, and less than that before I return to Kansas. The going away party should be fun.... read more

We left Dan & Cathy's on Wednesday & were heading to Chicago when we realized that we had wanted to see the Notre Dame University, so we ended up backtracking a bit in order to go back to South Bend, IN. When we got to ND, we went to the Visitor's Center to find out if there were any events happening on campus. Well, there wasn't anything going on that night but can you believe that the woman at the visitor's center desk knew someone from Dutch Harbor & of course Ken knew her friend!!! Jamie was very helpful & gave us lots of info about ND, plus we asked her if there was a place we could camp out on campus & then take a shower the next day. We ended up pitching our tent ... read more

Well. Seth and Jodie's wedding is a good excuse to go back to Iowa, seeing all my fraternity buddies, the ol' fraternity house and Iowa State campus once again. I didn't realize how much I miss seeing the ISU campus, minus the students, now out for summer break. At least this is what I do: walking around the area and having a good nostalgic moment of my student years at Iowa State.... read more

We spent several days with our family in Iowa. They had about 17" of snow in the last few weeks so we went sledding at the cemetary. The girls experienced their first wrestling match at Iowa State. We also went to the butterfly house for some warmer indoor weather. We were a little sad to say our goodbyes to grandpa & granny but they are happy for us to have this great opportunity! ... read more
