We woke up and got the hell out of the Budget Inn Express as quickly as possible and figured we would head down to Toliet's main attraction, the Harrah's riverboat casino. I have to admit it wasn't a bad little hotel/casino. The crowd that day consisted of hideously coiffed senior citizens and down and out types. I think casino security were sort of shocked to see a couple of twenty somethings inside by their reaction at our entrance. We didn't win the big jackpot, but we walked away only two dollars poorer after a quick spin on the nickel slots. We hopped on the I-80 and loped toward Iowa. We were we glad to leave Joliet. At the Illinois/Iowa state line, in this case - Old Man River, we decided ... read more

2007 Masterson Travel 07 May 29-June 2 Lake or Pond? See picture. The surface area is about 10 acres, but we were told by Iowa State University students that a body of water must be able to erode its shore when the wind blows to be called a Lake. Now, this pond is popular with fishermen (and one 4 year old fisherwoman), so the County of Monona has called it Oldham Lake Recreation Area. Boat speed is limited to "No Wake." How a boat would have the space to accelerate to wake speed is difficult to appreciate. We have been the sole inhabitants for four days and our variety of experiences have all been good. We have experienced weather from warm sun to heavy rain and wind. We have visited the sought after grave of Kay's ... read more

We've been here 4 days in Oldham Lake County Park. Well, it is an 11 acre pond with mowed lawn, gravel drive and electric plugs. Nice if you can live with a water hand pump and waste water straage tanks. We can ... only for a week. Kay found great-grandfather Thomas Loyd's grave and land records.... read more

We started our trip by spending the weekend at Sauder Village near Archibald, Ohio. We had lots of fun with our camping club. George golfed and I went to a quilt shop with other women who are interested or passionate about quilting. Of course the weekend involved good food and lots of conversation. Various club members have been to Alaska in the past and were happy to share their knowledge with us. George took notes to add to the ones he already has. There is something new each time we talk to people, as each experience is different. Monday we drove to western Illinois and camped at The Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park. It wasn’t very clear that we were actually in an area we could camp in, as it was marked Equestrian Camping. The ranger ... read more

The odds are that if you found this blog you are familiar with me and my upcoming trip. For those of you who don't know me, or for those members of the Deuling family who never pay attention to the details of such things (come on Kathy you know I am talking about you) let me give you a little bit of background. I am an associate professor of computer science (manged to receive tenure and promotion this year!) at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA. While that doesn't normally lend itself to a lot of international travel, this particular trip is a unique experience. I will be departing on Thursday, May 10th for 28 days of travel including two and half weeks in Russia, a half week in Northern Italy, and nearly ... read more

The last two weeks have been full of activity. We have been working fast and furious, trying to get our house packed up - some things to go on the container, some things to go in storage, and some to pack in our suitcases. Additionally, we have been fitting in Dr.'s appointments, purchasing new glasses and contacts for those who needed them, last minute shopping, banking, etc. On March 29, our container arrived about 8:30 am. It was foggy and damp, but fortunately, the storm that was predicted held off for a few hours. George, Jacob, and Luke, along with help from two church members - Matt Parker and Chris Westphal, and our neighbor, Mike Crabbs, loaded our container. George did a great job strategically planning how and what order things would be loaded. We ... read more

¡Hola amigos! Can you believe that we leave for Guatemala in less than 24 hours?! It hardly seems possible! As a matter of fact, it wouldn't be possible at all if it wasn't for the support you all have given us. Thank you. You have contributed your time, donations, dollars, thoughts and prayers. Without these gifts, our mission this year would not be possible. As most of you know, this year's trip is especially exciting because we will be breaking ground on a new school called La Escuela de los Santos, or the School of the Saints. This school will act as one component under Pastor Diane and Estuardo Dardón's new nonprofit, Caminos de Esperanza, or Journeys of Hope. Although beginning construction for the school will be our main project this week, there will be many ... read more

Trip to Ireland, take II. I'm submitting my application this afternoon, and I've already arranged for my transcript and recommendations to be sent. Now that I've done this all before, I feel quite a bit more confident. Left to do: figure out my phone service (thinking about cingular) book flight(s) arrange housing and many more I can't think of at the moment Out of those, I'm really only concerned about the phone service one, because I've done all the others before. On the whole, though, I'm in much better shape than I was last year at this time. Funny what experience can do for a person.... read more

So, yea it's been a while since I posted. Thought I should update you all before I start my next adventure. So, I left H-berg and all it's wonderful glory. I'll never forget my time there, or the people I met. All around an amazing experience and I worry slightly that this next trip will not match up in the magnitude that was H-berg. Sigh. 7 of us interns had an amazing blowout on the last Friday in town, filled with beer and downtown, dancing, drinks with fireworks in them, MP cars, and a little crying to wrap up the night. AO and I spent the next few days traveling between anyone that would house the lost interns, such as Denny (AO's teacher) Carol, and G. Good times were had all around. Denny took us to ... read more

Tomorrow is the big day! I'm out of mind trying to get last minute details done before we leave tomorrow. This past week has been really good and really busy. Somthing really wonderful happened to The Husband and me, and it's made financing this trip much easier. It's nice to be able to travel and do what you want to do and not worry about the budget so much. It's never happened to me before, so I'll try not to come home broke as a joke. For the most part, I'm done with my planning. The person that was supposed to watch my house while I'm gone backed out today (and didn't call), so I had to scramble to find someone at the last minute. Ozy's stuff is ready to go, and he likes the new ... read more
