I'd been listening to the audiobook of The Martian for the last two days whilst wondering around and was desperate to see it. So after arriving in Chicago on a seven hour bus ride from Detroit (which included being held up a couple of times by marching bands taking part in the Columbus day parade), I dumped my stuff in the hostel and wandered up through the city in search of a movie theatre. I was expecting the uncomfortable cinema seats you get in UK cinemas but was presently surprised to see the whole place was filled with big, comfy Lazyboy style chairs. I have to admit that I nearly fell asleep, not because the movie was bad, just that I'd spent the whole day squashed on a sweaty bus. Afterwards I tried (but didn't succeed) ... read more

Before bestie T et moi take on the road trip proper, we decided to fly into Chicago for a spell. Our occasional third travel musketeer, Auntie A, joined us for the Chicago bit. (And is it still "musketeer" when we is all refined ladies? Should it not be Musketrixes? Musketrettes? Or are we just going gender neutral with this? I digress.) We arrived on September 10 and left obscenely early on the 13th. Here's what we did: 1) Architectural river tour (everyone's favourite, even though it rained the whole time) 2) Hop-on, hop-off (Big Bus) a few times - we got the 48hr pass with the intention of using it often to get around to the main sites, but in the end it was more efficient to walk so that's what we did. Still worth it ... read more

Well, well, well, I talked Bob into going to the "Roller Coaster Capital of the World" in Sandusky, OH. We rode 2 roller coasters, the old, wooden one (classic, called the Gemini) and the modern one -- The Magnum XL200. I must say that the more modern ones don't shake you around so much -- ha. Our necks and backs were whipped about, so we resorted to riding the ferris wheel to recover and we really enjoyed the Gondolas, which all the oldest and youngest ride, no teenagers or 20-somsethings in sight for that one. Bob was happy because it ended up being $1 hot dog day. Anyway, we survived the day and we are in Chicago. I must say, you should have heard Bob on the roller coasters, it was worth the trip for that. ... read more

The journey has begun. Midnight to 6am flight SFO to O'Hare. Grateful for frequent flier miles and Admiral's club. Had a nice visit and dinner with Madalyn's sister and brother in law. Now on to Heathrow and overnight. Feeling the sleep deficit, jet lag not necessary.... read more

This is a trial entry to re-learn how this works again. Then I will add the details of weeks of planning for a trip first thought of over 30 years ago. 28 May 2015 continued entry. So we have been trying to reduce our lifetime accumulation of paper and stuff. One item was a NYTimes travel article from 1987 on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. So we have had this on our list for about 30 years. As a prelude we have walked the Milford Track in New Zealand; the Great Ocean Walk in Australia; The Coast to Coast (Wainwright Trail)(C2C) in England; The Lycian Way in Turkey; and I have also walked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu as well as hiking with our Sun City Anthem Nevada (SCA) hiking club. After the Coast ... read more

Day 5. I only brought one sweat shirt for the trip thinking we will be visiting places in July. Maybe a couple nights out west will be cool. Well, today it is only 61 degrees in Chicago. We started out with a morning jog by the Lake to Grant Park, visited Buckingham Fountain and then went to the SkyDeck in Willis Tower. We then hit the Navy Pier. Life is like a box of chocolates...so, we let the boys choose lunch--Bubba Gump Shrimp. I didn't go in with high expectations but it was surprisingly good. Well, "our full tank of gas" ran low after all that running around. We ditched the boys and let them recover for a few minutes while Tracey and I toured the hotel. There is so much incredible architecture here in Chicago ... read more

Day 4: Latitude 41.89, Longitude 87.62, Sunshine 70 degrees. We woke up in Cleveland (700 miles into the trip). True to our claim yesterday that Clevelanders, like their AC, sure enough, the valet brings our car around and the AC is cranked up as high as it can go and it is 62 degrees out. We roll down the windows and take off. Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois are now checked off as visited by the Turgeons and we also spot a handful more license plates leaving us with eight left to spot. Quick stop for lunch on a drive by of Notre Dame--trying to plant the seeds for six years from now. Very bummed there is no Welcome to Illinois sign on route 90. However, we may have missed it as we kept looking over ... read more
