Each time we went to Kona (well, The Island, actually), we did some tourist-y things - like, visited the Volcano and went to a bunch of beaches and snorkelled… but, we didn’t actually make it to a Lu’au for NINE YEARS! Lu’aus just weren’t on the list of things I wanted to do. Until, I realized, we’d been there 9 times, and hadn’t done the most classic thing. After taking a random opinion poll, we decided to go to the Lu’au at the King Kamehameha Kona Beach Hotel. We chose that particular one because the Royal Court arrives by boat, the Court Herald announcing their arrival blasting the Conch. Also, it was our understanding that they were the only lu’au at the time ... read more

When you hear the name “Kona”, you might automatically think of the world-class Ironman Competition. Or the world-famous best-ever Kona coffee. One thing is certain: it is the hub of tourism for the Big Island. I mean, many people come to see the Volcano, but that’s just a day. The rest of the time, most people visit Kona-side. And why? well, for one thing, the weather is pretty perfect, and normally predictable. The weatherman says, every day, something like: “Today will be 83° with a few minutes of mist around 3pm.” And guess what? Every day is 83°, and every day, there’s a mist, around 3pm. Rarely a pelting rain. Rarely a “cool” day. (83° Fahrenheit is 28° Celsius.) You want to be able to count on certain things (like good weather) when you are vacation. ... read more

I missed seeing the Petroglyphs in Volcano National Park (we accidentally opted to take a scenic drive down an old road so it was too dark by the time we got to the Petroglyph Trail), BUT, fortunately, Chris & Amanda and the girls were up for hiking to the Petroglyphs along the Kohala Coast. The Petroglyph Trail is beside the King’s Shops, and apparently, there’s a free tour of the petroglyphs. We just walked around out there and made guesses about what everything was (there are occasional signs, too, to help with your guesses), but it might be handy to have an expert on hand… url=http... read more

Once upon a time, there was a brave sea-captain, name Captain James Cook. Capt. Cook was born in Yorkshire, England in 1728, joined the British merchant navy in his teens and then joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He was an explorer, navigator and cartographer (his maps were so accurate that some of them were still being used in the middle of the 20th Century!) He travelled the Globe, going here and there and everywhere, including, on his last voyage (apparently in search of the Northwest Passage): they went from Tahiti to Hawaii (he and his crew were the first Europeans to ever visit the Hawaiian Islands) to Cape Foulweather on the Oregon Coast (of the United States), which he named because – guess why – they had bad weather when they arrived… Back to Hawaii ... read more

Having recovered from our exhausting hike to the lava flow along the coast the previous day, Yann and I had resolved to hike to the top of Mauna Loa on wednesday (8th May). Thankfully - with the summit of Mauna Loa being almost 14,000 feet (over 4000 metres) above sea level - we would be able to tackle the first 11,000 feet of ascent by car, meaning we would only have to climb the remaining 2000-plus feet on foot! Hoping to beat the clouds that inevitably build up around both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in the afternoon, we were up early and on our way to Hilo for a quick breakfast, before turning mauka (inland) and linking up with the previously notorious, but now almost flawless, Saddle Road. Before long we were six thousand feet ... read more

Big Island.

Dec. 26th 2012, Kailua-Kona One of the most amazing dives of my life. Years ago divers discovered during nightdives, that mantas feed on the plancton that is attracted by the light of their flashlights. Also the mantas are not at all scared by the divers. Over the years these nightdives have developed into one of the top attractions on the Kailua-Kona Coast. From the manta's perspective they have educated divers to bring divelights to attract plancton... I don't think they are interested in us. We just carry the lights... Just when we entered the water, the mantas were already there and in full swing. They were attracted by the lights of the snorkelers, who were in the water before us... Watch these 3m-5m big fish turning loopings below the snorkelers! Now some more videos showing you ... read more
