Hello everyone and Happy New Year. It's lovely to hear from you all at home. I feel such a long way away! Well I've had an interesting few days - caught a bad bug on plane to Big Island - went on a tour up Mauna Kea (higher than Everest) and ended up with acute bronchitis - nearly hospitalised! Hostel I stayed at was very good but there were only two of us there and I was in bed for most of the time. Had to collect hire car and drive (for the very first time on 'wrong' side of road) last friday in a strange town looking for the Urgent Care Clinic that I wasn't sure existed! And I was feeling really ill (Get the picture?). Spent 3 hours there and then had to go ... read more

I managed to knock another item off my bucket list this week by seeing flowing molten lava from Kilauea the most active live volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii - and the best bit was that I didn’t have to do the long hot trek over the lava fields to do it. This week has been a mixture of relaxation on the garden island of Kauai and then excitement on Hawaii where I got to see the moon rise over the tallest mountain in the World - Mauna Kea. I had five more days in Kauai after my helicopter trip so I chilled and lazed around. I moved twice, firstly to a cheaper room in my original hotel and then down the road to an even cheaper room for the last 2 nights to a ... read more

I have traveled to many airports, but so far the Kona International Airport is my favorite. The plane ride from San Francisco to Kona was five hours long, I was tired and I sat with a stranger, though I did get an empty seat in between us and I was right in front of the large middle isle television screen. I watched Two and a Half Men and Valentines Day, which was not as bad as expected, and I listened to music on my mp3 player. Though I also didn't eat anything because food cost money on the plane and I was bummed that I couldn't see outside the window when we landed. However, all of the uncomfortableness of the plane ride evaporated when I stepped out of the plane. I got to walk down the ... read more

Today we’re in Kona. We were here last week too, but I had to stay onboard, so today was my only chance to explore this side of the Big Island. I scuba dive and I also love snorkeling, so of course exploring the underwater world of Hawaii was on my list of things to do while I’m here. When taking budgeting into consideration, I decided to go snorkeling twice rather than diving once. I organized a tour for a group of friends and myself to go on in the afternoon. So this morning I was free to explore around the port. I got off the ship with Emina and we spent some time just wandering around near the port. It’s a pretty town with a nice waterfront. I did some more gift shopping while we wandered. ... read more

We went to a Luau at the Royal Kona resort. It was so much fun! They unearthed a pig that was cooking in an earth oven all day, and it was so tender that it just fell apart. It is called Kahlua pork (spelling could be wrong here). Besides that, there was so much food, and it was all wonderful. We tasted poi, the starchy staple of the Hawaiian people (tasted very bland, and had the consistency of baby food, but was OK mixed with other stuff). Lomi lomi salmon, which is raw and delicious, chicken in coconut and spinich sauce, beef, another cooked fish that was also delicious......I can't remember the rest. What a feast! And the entertainment was very well done. Dances representing many of the Polynesian islands were performed by both men and ... read more

The Island of Hawaii or “the Big Island” is the biggest island in this chain of volcano-formed islands, and is also the most diverse. One resident we met on a black sand beach told us that of the 13 different climate zones, the big island has 11 of them (Steve wonders what the other 2 are?). We are staying on a coffee plantation on the Kona coast - the west side of the island which is typically the driest and sunniest. Well, like everywhere else we have been so far, they are having non-typical weather, so every day has been a mix of sun and cloud and rain. And, just the mile or so up the mountain where the coffee is grown and where we are staying, it cools off noticeably from the coast. Every day ... read more

Our flight out of Puerto Vallarta was delayed, and then even once we got to LA and taxied to the gate, they didn't open the doors for us to get out for almost half an hour. Once we found the shuttle to the hotel and arrived, and along with the one hour time change, it was late and we were tired. Still, we had to sort through our luggage, take out what we had bought in Mexico for gifts etc, and gather up our Hawaii stuff like snorkle equipment, and re-pack. It was a late night, and we had a very early flight, so we were up by 5 am. But, once we got on the plane, all was great. American Airlines was very comfortable. Steve loves to take pictures out the plane window, so I ... read more

We got in on Sunday morning from Paradise aka Hawaii the Big Island. It was such a beautiful wonderful spiritually opening (it always is when we go there) warmfull freeing trip to the island. When we first got there we had a few things planned, a loaou (sorry I don't know how to spell that!), a trip up to the tallest mountain in the world, Mauna Kea at 14,000 ft up, and a dolphin swim/snorkel adventure in the ocean from a sailboat. The first few days were beautiful and sunny. The luau was nice and was held at the Marriot Hotel in Waikoloa Resorts but we did notice that the drinks were watered down. I had 5 mai tai's and I could walk home, and wasn't hung over the next morning. Thats saying alot, I drink ... read more

Today is actually our second day on the “big island”, but we are on the other side of the island. We are in Kona today. This is much more of a tourist location than Hilo, despite what our guide said yesterday. We had to use the lifeboats to get to shore since the water is to shallow for the ship to dock (they anchor and then ferry people back and forth to shore). Conversely Hilo has a deep port and everything that is shipped to this island is first offloaded in Hilo and then driven across the island. That is why gasoline is $3.40 in Hilo and $3.66 here in Kona (glad we are not buying gasoline in either place). We had the buffet breakfast this morning to make sure we were in plenty of time ... read more

Kona, Day 4 (6/22/09): We had a casual day and rested most of the morning, having to catch up on laundry and do some swimming at the resort pool. We decided early on that we should go on a dinner cruise, having enjoyed them in the past with historical perspectives being offered as part of the trip. Now, when I called and booked this dinner, I was met with the following, "Its Gay Pride night, but no other cruises are on schedule until next Tuesday." Sheila and I decided to go and what an interesting trip this was. Most of the couples on the boat spent their evening on the first floor while we watched the most beautiful sunset from the upper deck. The green flash was difficult to see, if it was there, but when ... read more
