Susan had planned a snorkeling day for us but the winds and high surf were not cooperating and Kahalu'u Bay was closed. We were disappointed. Susan tried to "sweet talk" our way in but the life guards were having none of it! So we went back to Kona Resort and changed into street clothes - we were dressed with swim suit under shorts and T to be prepared to snorkel! There was a short "rest" period during which Susan learned Kahalu'u Bay was now opened - High winds and surf had died down. Being very close to our scheduled time for lunch at Keauhou Beach Resort, we went to lunch. Susan said perhaps we could go back to snorkel in the later afternoon after our walking tour of historic of Kailua-Kona. On the walking tour, we ... read more

The waves were still pretty high in the morning. All the safe seats were taken when we came down for breakfast so we got to sit next to the taped off area beyond which wave splashes gleefully glistened on the tables and chairs. We never were able to get there earlier than the whole group even though we were never late! Susan referred to our group as the "Energizer Bunnies." A frequent feature of ancient and contemporary architecture in Hawai'i is being open to the outside. There are no mosquitoes in Hawai'i. There are "no-see-'ems" but the ocean breezes frequently kept the dining areas, lobbies, and bars free of annoying bugs. That also means cold fronts can chill even the most pleasant venues. But this is Hawai'i and so the sun quickly warms us. (As I ... read more

Today after breakfast, we're all packed and in the coach luggage and all. Our first stop is Hawai'i Volcanos National Park. we walk through the rain forest and through an extinct lava tube. Rob & Susan tell us about the many trees, ferns, and blossoms of the rain forest. We drive up to the Jaggar Musem at the top of Kilauea crater. Once again, we couldn't see into the cauldera because of the heavy mist and rain (at least we got to use our rain coats). We had lunch at the Volcano Golf and Country Club. Yes, even in Hawai'i golfers are out playing in the rain. Next we stopped at Black Sand Beach, enjoyed the scenery, and took lots of pictures. It was a long drive to Kailua-Kona but we all dozed along the way. ... read more

I left Oahu on Wednesday and headed to the Big Island. My plane descended into this black lava field and desolate looking area.. Welcome to Kona!!!! My friend Justin lives here. I went to high school with him but never really knew him ..we found each other on myspace and he came over before my Australia trip and gave me so many great tips. This guy loves traveling as much as me if not more. He is always jetting somewhere. As we drive up to his house he shares with a few other people he says "Sorry my house is kinda ghetto"...."Its ok," I reply, "Ive been staying at a hostel. Anything is better" We round the corner and he pulls out a gate opener. Yah, dude lives in a gated community. A four bedroom..3 bath ... read more

A week has gone by since we landed and Michelle has headed home. We had every intention of posting daily - but by the time we got back to our room we fell asleep exhausted. Here are a few highlights of our days. Our first day was one of my favorite days. We headed to Huna beach - one of the top 10 beaches in the world. We swam and after being sufficiently roasted headed up to the North end of the Island and hiked down a beautiful valley. I will add the names later. We ended the day with dinner at Bongo Bob's which had a live band and overlooked Alli drive. ... read more

Dear Family and Friends, Ah....Hawaii....other than the significant temperature difference, we feel a bit as if we have come full circle. We started in Iceland, driving through lava fields and we end in Hawaii, driving through lava fields! When we first started to plan this trip 4 years ago, Ken knew he wanted to include Iceland for its rugged beauty and Kate knew she wanted to end with Hawaii, as a pretty good place for a relaxing transition. After another long travel day from Melbourne, Australia, to Kailua Kona, Hawaii (about 18 hours, door-to-door), we were thrilled to be warm, see the sun, speak English, and still have western-style toilets! Using US currency has taken some adjustment - we still find ourselves examining the money closely before using it. We are in a timeshare for the ... read more

We had been going and going the first 2 full days, so we decided to take it easy on our last full day in the Big Island. The hotel had its own tiny, private beach - our first destination in the morning. After a liberal application of sunscreen (...could the sun in Hawaii be that much worse than El Paso?), we found an area which had some shade and set up camp. Fortunately, there were not a lot of people on the beach, so into the water it was! It was such pleasant ocean that I have had to reform my opinion of "the beach experience." Unfortunately, my previous ocean outings seemed always to be at beach locations where either the water was too cold or too dangerous, and the beach itself was crowded and bug-infested...but ... read more

Reflecting on this wonderful trip so far, it certainly seems that the 4 days here on the Big Island of Hawaii are flying by! Though Henry has been to Hawaii on many occasions, he has not been to this island. It's my very first trip to any Hawaiian island, so we have wanted to see and do it all! We finally arrived at our hotel, the Fairmont Orchid on the west Kohala coast just north of Kona, at 8:40 on Saturday night. Our day of travel was long, starting with a flight from El Paso to Dallas, then to Maui, then to Hilo, ending with a 2 hour+ drive along the coast to the hotel. I have to admit that while Henry was driving an unknown highway, I was thoroughly enjoying the view from the passenger ... read more

Last day on HI. I did not really have big plans just sort of chillin out my last day here. I have been here 4 days and had not been swimming yet. I went to a reconstructed ancient hawaiian site that was on the ocean. Pretty neat to learn about their ancient culture. I walked just down the beach and went snorkelling. It is amazing how brightly colored the fish are. The water was very clear and cooler than I was expecting. Did not spend a lot of time in the water, don't want to get burnt first time in the water. Flying out to Kaua’I on Saturday. I hear it is gorgeous and looking forward to that. ... read more
