Thursday 3rd July 2014 The final pack before we left was a little hectic, where did all the extra stuff come from when we haven't done any shopping? We also now have an Esky (cooler box) thanks to Ili and Allan, but carrying it to the train and car hire place caused Rags a few headaches. Thanks to a bunch of occy straps we bought we managed to attach it to the top of one of the cases and we had no problems with it. After arriving at the airport by train we had to catch one of their inter-terminal trains to get to the car hire section. It is then that you realise how large the airport is as we traveled several kilometres by train to the rental car stop. Here we were given the ... read more

As budget travelers, we’re suckers for free housing. We received an invitation to stay at a family beach house and we were ecstatic, but the catch? It was in Florida (Destin, to be exact) and we only had Friday thru Sunday. But obstacles are meant to be hurdled so we decided on a whim to go for it. To kill two birds with one stone, we also wanted to stop in Savannah for a day; one of the tricks we've learned from our travels is that to save money, you need to combine trips. Hence, we love finding long layovers in a new city to add an extra destination without paying more. Since Savannah is conveniently located off Interstate 95 along our way to Destin, it was an obvious decision to swing by and pay a ... read more

The night before the start of a new adventure. I see myself standing on a corner in Winslow Arizona, when a girl my lord in a flat bed Ford. You know ,Route 66 , and the quintessential crossing of the good ole US of A. Kate and I bought a MiniCooper in Charlotte North Carolina, and we are taking on the Southern Route. The Cooper is Bright Red, Mini calls it Chile Red and I am positive everyone has seen one in that colour. We wanted to keep friends and family in touch with our shenanigans so here we are on travelblog. This blog is double sided, as much as we want to share our adventure, we would like our friends to help create the adventure. Take a look at our itinerary for the following days ... read more

The start, Pooler Georgia 31322 as its become known to us. Our daughter, Candice played ball at Thomas University, a small Southern Georgia community. She met, fell in love and married Mike Vitello. Candice and Mike have a brand new baby boy, Benjamin lives at 31322. Kathy and I were down for the birth, well actually for a total of 4 months. Kathy and Kim are both retired and just pursuing the good life. Now today started off with a setback, no title papers arrived in the overnight mail. Seems the previous owner had them locked in his Uncles safe at home. Sooo that meant breakfast at the Omellete House in Pooler, now this isnt urban spoon, but I will certainly recommend the Southern cooking, hospitality and prices here. Lots off y'alls and honey's, I have ... read more

We've arrived in Savannah. So far so good. We decided to do a reconnaissance mission for tomorrow night. We have the following to report... There is a giant NYE block party tomorrow night. In anticipation we've made reservations at Rocks on the River for dinner. We also scoped out Jazz'd Tapas Bar and Moon River Brewing Company. Jazz'd offered a long list of delicious Martinis. Jeremy tried the "New Blues" Martini with Gin, Blue Curacao, orange juice and Sprite. I had the Bellini Martini which is a mixture of vodka, Champagne, and since we're in Georgia peach schnapps and peach puree. The live jazz kept us around for Tapas. We tried the Shrimp and Grits, Chorizo Stuffed Mushrooms, and for me the meatless ... read more

Geo: 32.0808, -81.0907We protested about leaving Charleston, having little idea of what was ahead, but Savannah Historic Town was beautiful and after a slightly cheesy tram car ride round the city to get ourselves orientated we walked oursleves to exhaustion that afternoon and the next day. We stayed in a comfortable row (terraced) house and explored the old squares, museums and colonial cemetery with the help of a walking tour guide. Many of the old houses (60 in total) have been adopted by SCAD - Savannah College of Art and Design- which seems partly responsible for the city's regeneration, together with donations of beautiful mansions to the state by wealthy Women, fo Museums and Art galleries. I understood better how this came to pass when a guide explained that women with a wealthy inheritance could own ... read more

Today we did a road trip within our roadtrip. We visited three sights on the outskirts of Savannah, including the Wormsloe Historic Site, the Bonaventure Cemetery and Tybee Island. It was a great day. Wormsloe is the former site of an historic settlement house and plantation, owned by the Noble Jones family in the early days of the founding of Savannah. There is a short movie at the visitors centre about the founding of Savannah (it was a christian charity utopia with no plantations, no lawyers etc...), a small museum, and some trails leading the the archaeological site of the original Tabee house of Noble Jones, the grave site of his son, some nice look out points on the natural surroundings and some other historical recreations. The highlight though is the 1 plus mile long avenue ... read more

We lucked out....it didn't rain today. Because of this, we had an excellent day walking Savannah and seeing what it has to offer to the pedestrian tourist. We began the day with the excellent deluxe (continental) breakfast at The Marshall House, which included toast, bagels, cereals, oats, fruit and even two types of quiche. It was a nice spread. We finished up, got ready and headed out into the clamy and humid cloudy day in Savannah. I have to say, I was worried about the heat here in Savannah, but the clouds have been our friend; it hasn't been very hot at all. Nice, quite humid, but totally manageable for a tourist pedestrian. We began by walking Bull St towards Forsyth Park. On the way we saw a few more of the squares we didn't get ... read more
