Every year as we welcome the month of September, I can't help but think back to that crazy day seven years ago (has it been 7 years already) when planes crashed and buildings were pummeled. It is one of those memorable events that is engraved in your mind forever. I remember it well because at the time I was staying at a friend's place in Northern Manhattan. Ironically enough I was there on vacation, and some vacation it turned out to be. Can you imagine, a city the size of New York coming to an absolute stop?! No public transportation, no cars, no planes, no business... everything just came to a complete halt. People had to walk for miles just to get home; it just put everything in crazy proportions. As significant as we thing we ... read more

The Beijing Olympics have really given me an appetite to visit there again. My last visit was in my teens, which was about a decade ago (oops, I kind of revealed my age), and it seems that Beijing has drastically changed since then. China is rapidly developing, and it goes without saying that the Beijing Olympics provided a major boost. From what I know, the provincial areas have not evolved much as in any developing country; however, the cities have really changed with newly born sky scrapers capturing the skyline on a daily basis. From what my friends tell me, it really is a site to see. ... read more

So I made it to Florida safe and sound in the great city of Miami on June 12th, 2008. I don't have any pictures because I became extremely ill on the flight over. Very ironic considering that I never once became sick in Guatemala or Honduras and yet I catch a fever and a stomach flew on the flight back. So I traveled around Miami at 9pm at night wandering the streets to see if I could find the Miami International Hostel which I could not, but I did stumble across this other Hostel which had a Mexican restaurant right below where I bought 2 huge burritos. I was too sick to eat them then and there so I saved them for the trip the next day. I was going to hitchhike but I was just ... read more

So, what do I do to prepare for this trip??? 1. Buy a camera - yes, shockingly, I do not own a camera. Never had the need. Don't actually like pictures. But, I truly can't imagine NOT having pictures of the city of Machu Picchu. 2. Get a yellow fever vaccination shot. Must have one before they'll let you go into the Amazon. Which leads to the question...Where do you get one? Well, I've spoken with 4 Dr's offices & none of them have yellow fever vaccines. Finally the last one told me that I can get one at the health department. 3. Pack - yikes...I'm gonna push that one down to #20 4. Buy a head lamp. Yes, a head lamp...you know one of those lights that you strap to your head. Gonna need it ... read more

We’re Off! In true roadtrip fashion, we leave tampa today 2 hours late, and get our early morning start at the crack of 9:30. The general plan is to head up the SunCoast Highway, then get onto rt 19 to rt 98 until we hit Apalachicola. We are in absolutely no rush. The day is cloudless and gorgeous, hot and dry, and the drive is easy. The windows are down, and NPR is on the radio; Click and Clack discussing replacing a clutch. 19 is a small highway, dotted on each side by little towns, aged reminants of a bygone era before the coming of the interstate. The Florida coastal jungle is big here, pines and undergrowth so thick, both Rob and I were individually wondering what it must have been like for the explorers in ... read more

Before starting on the busy couple days we had, some more info on our little bed and breakfast in Gulfport, the Sea Breeze Manor. When it comes to B&Bs, you win some and you lose some. This one we lost. I tried to like it, I really did but it is old and crusty, the carpets were dirty, the breakfast okay, the common areas dingy. A lot of old people stay here which is pretty much what Tampa Bay is all about and they probably can't tell what a lousy place this is. The lady who owns it is quite nice, she used to work for Bush 1 I think and took an early retirement to do this. She looked at us a bit crossly when we came in because I don't think we fit the ... read more
