North Redington Beach is great and all but we had to move on and get away as the crowd there was getting old and unpleasant to look at. Every online guide said that Fort DeSoto Park has the best beaches, so down we went for a looksy. Getting there is easier said than done, which is part of the appeal and keeps all of the tourists away, plus since it is a State Park there is no concrete. Furthermore, we checked into our little Bed and Breakfast in Gulfport today, which is a historical town which maintains turn of the Century feel in what is now an overbuilt Tampa Bay area. I chose this place because there is a beach but the Gulfport Beach is no good, bunch of brackish backwater. Fort DeSoto Beach Fort DeSoto ... read more

I have done most of my packing and have printed out all of my important documents and then we had some sort of transformer explosion in the neighborhood and now my desktop computer and printer will not turn back on! I have to leave tomorrow and there is no time to see if they can be fixed. I hope that Rich will be able to do that for me. Luckily I backed up most stuff. I hope I haven't lost the other stuff and that my computer and printer have simple problems that can be repaired easily. Rich will drive me early tomorrow morning to Tampa Airport and I will fly to Miami, then on to San Jose, Costa Rica. I have arranged for the Montana Linda, the School of Languages to send me a driver ... read more

Hello everyone! I just said good-bye to Niels and Maike who are headed to Treasure Island near St. Petersburgh. They were here for 2 nights to recover from their problematic trip from Germany. They missed their connecting flight to Miami, while they were in Washington DC. They were held up by immigration lines and that is how the problem occurred. They had to stay one night in Washington DC without their luggage. We had a wonderful 10 mile canoe trip on the Withlacoochee River yesterday. The weather was nice, not too hot and the river wasn't too buggy. We saw 4 small gators on the river as well as many birds and turtles. We even saw one large soft-shelled turtle who was missing a front leg. (A nice turtle like that, you don't eat all at ... read more

Well yall, I embarked on an eleven and half mile kayak excursion this past Saturday, March 29th, down the Hillsborough River in Tampa. It was part of my friend Shawn’s biology class trip. Needless to say it was a pretty large sized group of people. The day was set to start off at 8:30am and conclude at 2pm, with some presentations being given about halfway down the river at a breaking point. We finally didn’t get onto the river until about 10:30am (thanks Brice and Alana for being so late). Upon them finally arriving we car pooled from our return spot to our starting spot. After unloading all the canoes and kayaks, plus some guidance to the people who have never done either before we began tossing people in boats and shoving off. Shawn and ... read more

Travelling again, finally, this time with more time and less money, and of course after such a long hiatus, I am excited. This is my first grand adventure of what I hope will be many since I quit my Wall St. job, moved from NYC, and pretty much changed my whole life around. The plan: travel roadtrip style through the deep south: Alabama, Mississippi, Louisana, Georgia, with the panhandle of Florida thrown in for good measure. The area is known for its southern hospitality, charming mansions, the civil war, Mississippi river, cajuns, delta blues music and, of course, Hurricane Katrina: all of which I plan to ferret out at every turn. I also plan to avoid all interstates and as many 4 lane highways as I can. One girl, one car, and the all the backroads ... read more

Things I can learn from my dog. That’s the theme of my entry tonight. It’s Friday evening and a squall line of severe thunderstorms is approaching the Tampa area. Fortunately I am somewhat sheltered in my RV in the service bay. So DB is covered with only the very front getting a little wet from some blowing rain. Ike is parked in front. I’m hoping and praying we won’t have any damaging winds, hail, or tornadoes. But I feel like I’m a little better protected than if I was set up in a campground. Let me back up and see if I can recap the last few days. Wednesday they made pretty good progress with some of the smaller items that needed attention. We did end up staying in the rig in the service bay on ... read more

For the first time in a year and a half of RVing, over 20,000 miles traveled, and nearly 6 months total on the road, I’m finally experiencing the “downside” of RVing - waiting for warranty work. I am in Tampa, Florida at the dealership where I purchased my new RV last month. Unfortunately there were two somewhat time consuming warranty issues (paint touch up and gouged linoleum floor tiles) that were not resolved before I picked up the unit. So I set up an appointment for this week knowing I would be in Destin, Florida (still over 400 miles away from Tampa) last week. The delivery side of this dealership leaves something to be desired. Not only did I hear stories while I was sitting around for 24 hours with NOTHING being done last month, but ... read more
