Okay, so despite Brisbane being a really great city it was getting a little lonely. You meet some cool people but it's not like having your friends around you. The main problem was that hostels really aren't for me. They're all decent as far as hostels go but they're basically what I've been working for the last few years to get away from - no privacy, nowhere to put any belongings. You literally live out of a bag which is just hassle. To cut a long story short, rather than continuing to haemorrhage money on something that was okay I've decided to change this from travelling to an extended break and come back to England early. I'm currently in Sarasota, Florida where my parents conveniently bought a place last week (free accomodation), which is good timing ... read more

Hello everybody, Our big trip to Asia started by heading East. After a long and painful last week in San Francisco, we went to Baltimore where we spent a few days with Tara's family. We did a couple of short hikes in two different parks, ate too much, and time flew by. We arrived in Bradenton, Florida on Sunday evening where we spend the week with our good friends (and great hosts) Christophe and Melanie. Christophe (yes, it's a fairly popular name in France) and I went to University together and both ended up with a history degree. And while I have been a waiter, a computer geek and now a nurse, Christophe has always been using his degree. He is a history teacher at a tennis academy. Melanie, his wife, works in the same school ... read more

OK, I had to cut things short last time, but I realized I left out my most memorable day in Sarasota, which was unfortunately the last one...for now!! I decided to get creative and do what I like to call a beach survey. Basically, I made it my mission to go to every single beach in Sarasota. OK, my original goal was to hit every beach in Sarasota county, but I need to come back again to go to Casey Key, Nokomis Beach, Venice Beach, Casperson Beach, and Manasota Beach. I decided to start from the top. First stop was Longboat Beach. The best word to describe this spot: serene. It was practically empty (which I couldn't understand, since it's breathtakingly beautiful), but this is a welcome sight. It was quiet, peaceful and sunny with ... read more

I decided I needed a long weekend far, far away from northeast, so I started doing some research. I knew I wanted to stay in the country and I've always been a big fan of Florida, but I've never really strayed from the East Coast. This summer, I thought I might try something new. I had been hearing rave reviews from friends and family about a cute little west coast Florida town called Sarasota. Being a dedicated Seinfeld fan, I remember Jerry's parents mentioning Sarasota fairly often, so I finally decided to check it out. This place literally blew me away. I was expecting to spend my three short days in Sarasota baking on beautiful Siesta Beach, home to the world's softest and whitest sand. That fantasy definitely came true, but there were so many things ... read more

An early departure and an 8 hour flight later Claire, Mark (Claire's boyfriend) and I (the 3rd wheel) arrived in Sanford, Florida - to a sweltering heat of about 30C. We learnt straight away not to be nice to customs as obviously a friendly kiwi smile and hello automatically qualifies you to be declined entrance to the USA until you have had your luggage scanned. Once outside, and in the hire car I had to strip off because it was so damn hot, the air conditioning took a while to kick in. It felt funny being back in America and strange also of not being surrounded by all these busy narrow roads and old buildings, but instead being on a busy freeway being passed by huge SUV's and driving past small towns of take away ... read more

Sunny Sarasota North America » United States » Florida » Sarasota By PamMay 31st 2007Pamela Monroe Wow!!! Where did the last 3 months go?? We have been way too busy for retired people. We returned to Sarasota in mid Feburary and bought a condo in May. We are once again home owners and I'm not sure how both of us feel about that. It was a deal that we just couldn't pass by in a beautiful condo complex on Little Sarasota Bay. This doesn't mean that our traveling has stopped. In fact,we leave for Europe on June 1. We will be traveling through Portugal, Spain, France, an... read more

Wes and I left Gainesville to make it to my Aunt Emily’s house in Sarasota for Easter dinner. She lives there with her husband Michael and daughter Michelle, in a house not far from the gulf coast and Siesta Key. Michael’s family was in town for a family reunion, so we got to meet some of his siblings and had a great Easter dinner with everyone. I hadn’t seen my aunt since our family reunion in 2005, and her daughter has grown so much since then. While we were there, Wes and I rode our bicycles out to Siesta Key twice. The first time, it had rained for most of the day and we missed most of the daylight hours at the beach, but the next day we rode back again and spent a few ... read more
