Geo: 28.3467, -81.48016/5/12 – We left Savannah, GA at 7:45, 74 degrees, and headed down I-95 to Florida and home sweet home. I was up early this morning. Once the car was pointed south, I was anxious to get there. We arrived at 1 PM, and it surely felt good to be back. The house was comfy and ready for us, thanks to Pat and Andy. Great friends.Well, when we began this adventure, I paused a bit, unsure that we would make it all the way without a major blow-up of some kind. Florida has so much more than Disney!! We found out that St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city and port in the continental United States. It has a peaceful park and a wonderful old fort. The fort is called The Castillo de San Marcos . It is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. Construction was begun in 1672 by the Spanish when Florida was a Spanish territory.The fort is made out of a mixture of clay and oyster shells and when it was hit by cannon balls it did not crumble. DEFINITELY DO DISNEY! Anyone who has ever been to Disney can attest to the fact that every square inch is charmingly enchanted and magically alluring. It's like Tinkerbell wakes up each morning and sprinkle's fairy dust on every single visitor. I have to admit I was apprehensive about long lines, mediocre food, and spending too much money. However, it only took one look into my son's bedazzled gaze to realize that Mickey's mystical spell was a good thing. At a time when we were trying to convince our kids that Santa is real and a big bunny leaves a basket of goodies, Disney leaves no doubt that there is still magic in this world.
