Jacksonville to Kissimmee

Florida has so much more than Disney!!

We found out that St. Augustine was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorer and admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, it is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city and port in the continental United States. It has a peaceful park and a wonderful old fort. The fort is called The Castillo de San Marcos . It is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. Construction was begun in 1672 by the Spanish when Florida was a Spanish territory. The fort is made out of a mixture of clay and oyster shells and when it was hit by cannon balls it did not crumble. It survived many attacks!! One time the people of the town all lived inside the fort for 51 days. They were saved from an attack, but can you imagine living with 1,500 people and only having 2 bathrooms....yikes!!
