Day 1, Key West PierceLast Sunday I watched my parents drive my truck full of all my belongings down the street as I thought to myself "what the hell am I doing, what did I do? What did I just do?!" I was left with only my bike and the little bit of stuff that I had packed into my bike bags. I was more nervous now than ever before and I kept thinking to myself "what just happened here? what did I just do?" as I flew down south. I felt a little better while on layover in Ft. Lauderdale seeing all the palm trees and all the beautiful beach going people, myself included of course. When I finally boarded the tiny plane to Key West I felt great, even the pilot was a beautiful ... read more

Untitled Pierce Tomorrow I will get up early one last time, I will drive the ten miles through Fayetteville, North Carolina to Fort Bragg one last time, I will go to the chow hall for two dollar breakfast one last time, and I will walk through the post out-processing station one last time. Tomorrow is the last day I will be an active duty US Army artillery officer. The last four years has been difficult, complicated, stressful, exhausting, depressing, exciting, adventurous, inspirational, fun, awesome, and a whole lot of words that I would rather not mention. I don't think I would have wanted it any other way. I have learned a lot about the world and myself, met a lot of great people and will always cherish these experiences, good and bad, and will never forget ... read more

My friend, Jo, told me I'd cry a lot on this journey. Having travelled alone for six months at nineteen (!), she said there would be these emotional times. "Crying" she wrote in her mail. "Thank God for crying." As usual, she took me by surprise. Although I'm a Buddhist and know life is suffering, know I should sit with my feelings in order to transform them, tears have been too much a part of my life over the past year or so for me to embrace them - I mean, no sane person wants pain, right? Even if denying it has left me depressed and energetically suppressed. But, hey, you guessed the punchline - the crying has started. I was up half the night worrying about money - that is hopefuly going to be resolved ... read more

After packing up in Orlando, we made good time East and travelled down the coast. Our first pitstop was at Sebastian Inlet State Park, where we were lucky enough to see a wild manatee. We were on a bridge with some fishermen and it slowly swam under us and came up for air at the other side. It was about twice the size of the rescued ones at Seaworld. We realised how privileged were were when the fishermen said they had never seen one at that spot. Definately a highlight! We stayed the night at Boca Raton when we grew tired and hungry and set off early the next morning for the Keys via Miami. For such a huge city, Miami was quite easy to get into. It was Sunday morning though. We walked along the ... read more

Again I got up around 7:00 and got going by 8:00. Started running into tolls around Miami. This brought back bad memories of the northeast. Stopped and got a few supplies before heading to the Keys, where I expected everything to be expensive. Arrived at Leo’s campground around 7:00 PM. I had called in advance so they expected me. It kind of sucked in that I was paying $43/night to essentially park my truck. Well it would do for the night, because I didn’t have any other ideas. 1/16/07 Got up at 6:00 and headed to the Regatta to try and get on a boat. Arrived at the regatta headquarters around 7:00 AM and spoke with a person about volunteering. They said I would need to speak with Mike and it would be best to wait ... read more

We love Key West, from the moment we pulled into the Conch Harbor Marina and stepped off the boat and into the party. It certainly is a wild and crazy town. And we stayed at a great marina, with a big swimming pool and Monty’s bar and restaurant. Across the street was Pepe’s, one of the oldest and best restaurants in town with amazing food (which we enjoyed on many occasions). And it was a short walk along the docks, thru the historic seaport village, to get to the heart of town- Duval Street. Duval Street is amazing, what a concept. It is a mile long stretch with bars and restaurants and galleries and shops- and did I mention- bars. There is over 100 bars located on Duval, some as tiny as an alleyway and others ... read more

Many of you asked “What do you do for an encore after last year’s spectacular World Cruise adventure?” The answer…Take another World Cruise but go in the opposite direction and visit as many new destinations as possible. It all started when we reviewed the Voyagers ‘07 passenger inspired itinerary and realized how it complimented the ‘06s. To our dismay, it was sold out, so we enlisted our travel agency “Cruise Professionals” to help. By autumn, we had our suite booked and decided that it would be a lot of fun to tell no one that we were coming and surprise them at the Bon Voyage party in Miami on January 8th. But I’m getting ahead of myself. In December, we were honored to be invited to a fellow passengers 90th birthday party in Key West, 2 ... read more
